Book excerpt: A comparable systems analysis was performed on seven systems selected for their relevance to the features and functions of the Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) and Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO) components of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) program. The seven systems were selected for their relevance to ATIS/CVO concepts, user time-sharing characteristics, technology level, dynamics of information flow, level of implementation, and accessibility. Five of the systems were highway transportation or CVO in-vehicle information systems, two were comparable systems featuring advanced navigation and decision aiding in Army aviation. Analyses of the seven systems resulted in human factors lessons learned. The lessons learned were compiled into preliminary human factors design guidelines for ATIS/CVO.

Book excerpt: "The presentation of in-vehicle information to the driver is an important issue for highway safety. A review of the guideline literature revealed that although attempts have been made to develop guidelines for in-vehicle information systems, few guidelines are available for practical application. The objective of this study was to generate design guidelines for Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) displays. To meet this objective, the following tasks were undertaken. First, information from the literature was used to develop a list of information items that are or could be made available to a driver. Second, this list was compiled into a set of logical information item groupings. Third, an analysis was conducted for each information item to assess the level of attention, comprehension, and required action for each item. This information was then filtered through the set of existing standards so that duplicate work would not be conducted. Fourth, in order to identify a subset of information items that are most suitable for standard development, trade studies were performed. Of the remaining information items, the driving population stereotypes and preferences for ATIS displays were assessed via a survey or a user clinic. The design recommendations made on the basis of the results of this study reflect both general recommendations and, where appropriate, specific recommendations"--Technical report documentation page.

Book excerpt: "As one of a series of studies aimed at gathering data to develop human factors design guidelines for Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) and Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO), the present study utilized a driving simulator to study CVO drivers and (1) the effects of driver fatigue and (2) the effects of mental workload on objective and subjective indices of driver performance and opinion. Fatigue was induced through sleep deprivation and through a 90-minute simulator drive. Mental workload was manipulated through driving task load and ATIS complexity. Although the results indicated degraded driving performance under the sleep-deprived condition, performance on ATIS-related tasks was not affected by sleep deprivation.
