Provides examples for integrating decision making into management. Emphasizes creativity in management by integrating art and science. This book appeals to population biologists, evolutionary biologists and social scientists. It is a key resource for on-the-ground managers and research scientists developing harvesting applications. As the book’s contributors explain: “Making decisions that are robust to uncertainty...is a paradigm shift with a lot of potential to improve outcomes for fish and wildlife populations.” –Andrew Tyre and Brigitte Tenhumberg “Temporal shifts in system states...must somehow be anticipated and dealt with to derive harvest policies that remain optimal in the long term.” –Michael Conroy “Proactive, effective management of sportspersons...will be essential in the new paradigm of harvest management.” –Matthew Gruntorad and Christopher Chizinski

Book Synopsis The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation by : Shane P. Mahoney
Download or read book The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation written by Shane P. Mahoney and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foremost experts on the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation come together to discuss its role in the rescue, recovery, and future of our wildlife resources. At the end of the nineteenth century, North America suffered a catastrophic loss of wildlife driven by unbridled resource extraction, market hunting, and unrelenting subsistence killing. This crisis led powerful political forces in the United States and Canada to collaborate in the hopes of reversing the process, not merely halting the extinctions but returning wildlife to abundance. While there was great understanding of how to manage wildlife in Europe, where wildlife management was an old, mature profession, Continental methods depended on social values often unacceptable to North Americans. Even Canada, a loyal colony of England, abandoned wildlife management as practiced in the mother country and joined forces with like-minded Americans to develop a revolutionary system of wildlife conservation. In time, and surviving the close scrutiny and hard ongoing debate of open, democratic societies, this series of conservation practices became known as the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. In this book, editors Shane P. Mahoney and Valerius Geist, both leading authorities on the North American Model, bring together their expert colleagues to provide a comprehensive overview of the origins, achievements, and shortcomings of this highly successful conservation approach. This volume • reviews the emergence of conservation in late nineteenth–early twentieth century North America • provides detailed explorations of the Model's institutions, principles, laws, and policies • places the Model within ecological, cultural, and socioeconomic contexts • describes the many economic, social, and cultural benefits of wildlife restoration and management • addresses the Model's challenges and limitations while pointing to emerging opportunities for increasing inclusivity and optimizing implementation Studying the North American experience offers insight into how institutionalizing policies and laws while incentivizing citizen engagement can result in a resilient framework for conservation. Written for wildlife professionals, researchers, and students, this book explores the factors that helped fashion an enduring conservation system, one that has not only rescued, recovered, and sustainably utilized wildlife for over a century, but that has also advanced a significant economic driver and a greater scientific understanding of wildlife ecology. This book was released on 1994 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The present publication follows an earlier report by Vermeer and Butler (1989) that described the physical and biological environment, prey organisms, and ecology of waterbirds in the Strait of Georgia. Here, we compare the year-round abundance, distribution, and energy consumption of birds in five large estuaries and one small urban estuary in the Strait of Georgia. We use the traditional definition of an estuary: the lower deltaic portion of a river and the nearby shallow waters in the freshwater plume"--Introd.

Book Synopsis Winter Distributions of Thick-billed Murres from the Eastern Canadian Arctic and Western Greenland in Relation to Age and Time of Year by : Garry M. Donaldson

Donaldson and published by Canadian Museum of Civilization/Musee Canadien Des Civilisations. This book was released on 1997 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thick-billed Murres (Uria lomvia from colonies in the eastern Canadian Arctic and West Greenland winter in large numbers off the coast of Newfoundland, where they are subjected to heavy hunting pressure. Some of these colonies, especially in Greenland, have declined over the past 50 years, and this has raised concerns over the efects of current harvest levels in Newfoundland. We analyzed the recoveries of birds banded at Canadian and Greenland colonies to determine where and when birds of different ages and from different colonies were killed. We dealt with recoveries for the period prior to recent restrictions (winter of 1993-1994 onwards), which allowed us to compare recoveries from different geographical areas over the whole period when the birds are present off Newfoundland.

This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authored by some of the state’s top wildlife scientists, The Upland and Webless Migratory Game Birds of Texas presents the most up-to-date and comprehensive information covering twenty-one species of game birds. Ranging from the most well-known, like the Wild Turkey and Mourning Dove, to the marsh-loving rails and other more elusive species, these birds have widespread appeal among both hunters and birders and underscore the diverse challenges facing wildlife scientists, land managers, and conservationists in Texas today. From cultural significance to taxonomy and evolutionary history, this volume provides a wealth of background information on these species. Additionally, the book offers illustrated species accounts, detailed range maps, and information about habitat and management requirements, hunting regulations, and research priorities. Readers will gain a deeper understanding of these game birds and the array of terrestrial and wetland landscapes key to their survival. This will serve as a convenient and thorough reference volume for wildlife biologists and enthusiasts, as well as landowners and hunters.
Book Synopsis Population Modelling and Management of Snow Geese by : H. Boyd
Download or read book Population Modelling and Management of Snow Geese written by H. Boyd and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document consists of three separate but related papers. The objective of the first is to improve managerial understanding of the impact of spring hunting by indigenous peoples in northern Canada. It is an analysis of the relative impact of hunting in the spring, compared with the conventional hunting seasons in fall and winter. In the second paper, Cooke et al. comments on the model and the choice of parameters that was used in a paper by Rockwell et al., and which provided the underpinning for the argument in that paper that a great increase in the hunting kill of Snow Geese was required to reverse the rapid increase in the numbers of those geese. In the third paper, Rockwell and Ankney counter Cooke's claims.
