Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mating and Breeding of Poultry To the man or woman who desires some occupation or activity for a few spare hours as a relief from the fatigue, the strain and the routine of the regular day's work, poultry breeding, whether for the production of exhibition stock or of stock with heavy egg producing ability, is ideal. An intimate understanding of the laws or principles of breeding as well as of their application is necessary for success and poultry breeding is therefore an occupation which demands deep and discriminating thought and whose complex problems are at once a challenge and a stimulation to the intelligence of the breeder as well as being of absorbing interest. Moreover, the poultry breeder finds opportunity for the expression of his artistic instincts in molding the form or shape of the birds and the color or combination of colors to meet his ideal. In addition, there is the gratification of the sporting instinct, the pleasurable excitement of competition in exhibiting the choicest specimens at the shows and the satisfaction which comes from a win in the realization that the breeder has surpassed the efforts of his competitors and produced birds superior to theirs. Let no one to whom poultry breeding appeals hesitate to engage in it on the ground that he has not the room or facilities to enable him to compete with others more favorably situated. With only a back yard or village lot, and with the crudest equipment, it is possible to produce fowls of the highest excellence. Many winning birds in the leading exhibitions are produced by men and women who breed on a very limited scale without farms available for their poultry operations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Breeding Poultry for Exhibition No doubt the reason that brought forth the condemnation of breeding young stock together, and the advice that they should always be paired with birds older than themselves, was that young birds were indiscriminately mated together. But if the young stock have been properly reared, have had no check from disease or insects, and are well-grown birds, we would just as soon breed from them as we would if they were mated to birds older than them selves. We mention this not because we would advocate the breeding of young stock together as the general rule to follow, but to show that if occasion arises when it is necessary to either breed in this way or not to breed at all, we should not have the slightest hesitation in so mating. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Poultry Book: A Manual for the American Poultry Yard We have in mind widows, who have been left with families of small children dependent upon them, but without any means of support except the needle; maiden ladies, whom life's lottery has left without a household mate and pro tector; persons of infirm health, who have neither the strength nor facilities for the severe bodily or mental exertion which is required in other branches of indus try; the families of laborers, whose scanty earnings are but barely sufficient to feed and clothe the wife and little ones: All these, if so situated that they can have the use of a small tract of land, may greatly lighten the burdens of life by the keeping of poultry, and if we do not present this business in the glowing light that some enthusiasts do, it is that such as these may find in our book no incentives to extravagant anticipation, only to be followed by disappointment; but may be led to begin cautiously and work carefully until experience shall have taught them with the least possible loss - for experience teaches only by losses, or what is the same, by failures to attain possible gains - the most suitable methods for their estates and conditions. The foregoing remarks apply simply to the breeding of poultry for flesh and eggs; the breeding of fancy poultry is a separate business, and one which te quires special adaptitude for success, as well as a knowledge which can only be bought by experience It is not a business to be picked up in a day, any more than the breeding of horses and cattle. The same principles underlie the whole theory of breeding, and these principles are only to be mastered by years of study and practice; therefore we would advise those of limited means who have aspirations in this direction, to begin with one or two varieties of fowls; learn their habits and needs, and increase their number only in proportion as this knowledge is obtained. It is a knowledge which cannot be obtained from books, although books may be of such assistance that no poultry breeder can afford to do without them; but the information which they give must be mingled with personal experience, and thus digested and assimilated before it can be of much practical value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poultry for Prizes: A Complete and Practical Guide to the Breeding and Management of All Varieties of Poultry for Exhibition Many books that are written on the subject of Fancy Poultry contain merely descriptions of the various breeds and leave the reader entirely in the dark with regard to the details of breeding for show points and the general management of exhibition stock 5 but I claim that no person who reads this book and acts upon the advice contained therein need fall into the errors that have proved fatal to so many beginners. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Perfected Poultry of America The illustrated portions of this book are unusually interest ing, and are presented with a great deal of satisfaction. The artist has performed his work well, and his models have been the best to be found. No attempt has been made to idealize the specimens, but rather to give drawings that would be recognized and appreciated for the types of fowls to be seen in the-average breeding yards or show rooms of the country. These drawings probably will be criticised in some minor de tails, yet, as a whole, we are satisfied they will be regarded as typical specimens of the American breeder's fancy, and will be given credit as being a-truthful portrayal of breed types. AS a reference book, it should prove of untold value to every breeder and fancier, and by following its pages the chances of success in breeding and mating should be enhanced for the expert as well as the novice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The winners of the Nobel Prize show how economics, when done right, can help us solve the thorniest social and political problems of our day. Figuring out how to deal with today's critical economic problems is perhaps the great challenge of our time. Much greater than space travel or perhaps even the next revolutionary medical breakthrough, what is at stake is the whole idea of the good life as we have known it. Immigration and inequality, globalization and technological disruption, slowing growth and accelerating climate change--these are sources of great anxiety across the world, from New Delhi and Dakar to Paris and Washington, DC. The resources to address these challenges are there--what we lack are ideas that will help us jump the wall of disagreement and distrust that divides us. If we succeed, history will remember our era with gratitude; if we fail, the potential losses are incalculable. In this revolutionary book, renowned MIT economists Abhijit V. Banerjee and Esther Duflo take on this challenge, building on cutting-edge research in economics explained with lucidity and grace. Original, provocative, and urgent, Good Economics for Hard Times makes a persuasive case for an intelligent interventionism and a society built on compassion and respect. It is an extraordinary achievement, one that shines a light to help us appreciate and understand our precariously balanced world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

Book excerpt: How should we treat non-human animals? In this immensely powerful and influential book (now with a new introduction by Sapiens author Yuval Noah Harari), the renowned moral philosopher Peter Singer addresses this simple question with trenchant, dispassionate reasoning. Accompanied by the disturbing evidence of factory farms and laboratories, his answers triggered the birth of the animal rights movement. 'An extraordinary book which has had extraordinary effects... Widely known as the bible of the animal liberation movement' Independent on Sunday In the decades since this landmark classic first appeared, some public attitudes to animals may have changed but our continued abuse of animals in factory farms and as tools for research shows that the underlying ideas Singer exposes as ethically indefensible are still dominating the way we treat animals. As Yuval Harari’s brilliantly argued introduction makes clear, this book is as relevant now as the day it was written.
