Book excerpt: It is estimated that 1.6 million people in the United States have diabetes and half of them are not even aware that they have it. Guidelines were developed by the American Diabetes Association and endorsed by the National Institute of Health. These guidelines recommend diabetic screening for all adult patients 45 years or older and done every three years thereafter. How well do nurse practitioners follow the ADA guidelines for screening for diabetes? This study investigated whether NP's followed the ADA guidelines in screening for diabetes in patients 45 years or older. QAMUR model was the framework that guided this study. This is a descriptive study conducted through random sampling by chart review in a primary care office. A total of 50 charts were reviewed from different nurse practitioners. It was found that 66.7% of patients seen by the nurse practitioners had been screened for diabetes.

However, cognitive aging is a natural process that can have both positive and negative effects on cognitive function in older adults - effects that vary widely among individuals. At this point in time, when the older population is rapidly growing in the United States and across the globe, it is important to examine what is known about cognitive aging and to identify and promote actions that individuals, organizations, communities, and society can take to help older adults maintain and improve their cognitive health. Cognitive Aging assesses the public health dimensions of cognitive aging with an emphasis on definitions and terminology, epidemiology and surveillance, prevention and intervention, education of health professionals, and public awareness and education. This report makes specific recommendations for individuals to reduce the risks of cognitive decline with aging. Aging is inevitable, but there are actions that can be taken by individuals, families, communities, and society that may help to prevent or ameliorate the impact of aging on the brain, understand more about its impact, and help older adults live more fully and independent lives. Book excerpt: Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA-1c) levels help the health care provider to effectively manage diabetic patients. The American Diabetes Association has published guidelines that indicate HbA levels should be obtained on diabetic patients at a minimum twice a year. The objective of this study was to determine the extent to which nurse practitioners are following the American Diabetic Association guidelines, specifically with obtaining HbA1c levels. A descriptive retrospective study was conducted to obtain data on NP practices. Convenience samples of 91 charts from 5 NP's were audited. The charts were audited to determine adherence to the recommended guidelines. Results of this study indicate NP's overall follow ADA guidelines related to obtaining HbA-1c levels 94.5% of the time (n=86). The results vary between the three facilities used, with computer data entry charting having the best results (100%, n=42).
