Book excerpt: Excerpt from How We Are Governed in Virginia and the Nation In the manner of approaching the subject the author-has been moved by the further conviction that the elementary teaching of civil government will always be a bugbear and a failure unless its chief purpose is to relate the child in an intimate and personal way to the activities of govern ment. To' the pupil of less than high school age the powers and the functions of the State auditor or the organization of, and procedure in, the civil courts of the State are very dry subjects indeed, and very naturally so. But if he lives in a city, he probably takes a lively interest in the fire department, in the police, in the many things the city undertakes to do for the health of the community - things, such as a sewerage system, which he knows about but has perhaps never thought to ascribe to the government. Or if he lives in the country, he is doubtless vitally interested in what his county is doing tor-improve roads or to con solidate schools. It has been the conscious purpose Of the author in the first six chapters Of this book to make the child above all else, see the government as a real, active thing about him, a thing Of which he is a part. It is only after the pupil's interest has been thoroughly aroused to note the many operations Of the government that the effort is made-to Show him how the government Of his State is supported, organized, and Operated. This is done in as simple language as possible. The child mind is kept constantly in v1ew, and emphasis is laid upon the actual Operation Of the machinery of government rather than upon elaborate details of its organization. Obviously it is more difficult to infuse this same personal element into the child's study of the national government. The commonwealth is a nationally influential swing state alongside stalwarts like Florida or Ohio. But with increased power comes greater scrutiny--and corruption. Governor Bob McDonnell received a jail sentence on federal corruption charges, later vacated by the U.S. Supreme Court. Corporate influence on the state legislature and other leaders resulted in numerous ethics violations. Scandal erupted at the prestigious University of Virginia when the school ousted its president amid political drama and intrigue. Author Jeff Thomas reveals the intersection of money, power and politics and the corrosive effect on government in a new era."--Page [4] of cover.

History, Government, and Geography Service Virginia, the birthplace of our nation, played an important role in the winning of American independence. Virginia, the largest and the most influential of the 13 colonies, led the struggle for American independence and has helped to formulate American ideals and to shape our country's institutions. Introduction This publication was prepared to assist teachers in developing topics of study relating to the American Revolution and Virginia's role in the winning of independence and to help students develop deeper appreciation for the rich heritage that is theirs as citizens of the Commonwealth. The Virginia tradition was created by responsible men and women who believed in the inherent dignity of the individual, the role of government as a servant of the people, the value of freedom, justice, equality, and the concept of "rule of law." These ideals and beliefs remain the hallmark of Virginia and the nation. Important objectives of this publication are: To emphasize the study of Virginia history during the period from 1763 to 1783 when the state exerted influential leadership and wisdom in the winning of American independence; To develop a deeper understanding of the meaning of freedom and basic principles and traditions which have nourished and sustained the American way of life; To further the students' understanding of individual rights and responsibilities in a free society; To further acquaint students with their heritage of freedom and the importance of perpetuating democratic traditions; and To further students' understanding of the concept of self-government and the American way of life. It is hoped that this publication will assist in achieving these objectives. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.
