Book excerpt: A clinical guide to the psychological assessment and treatment of pain using hypnosis as a therapeutic approach. The discussions, written by 13 university scholars in anesthesiology, psychiatry, and family medicine, suggest new attitudes toward hypnosis as a form of analgesia and ways to evaluate the patient with chronic pain in order to effectively implement hypnotic treatments in the cases of cancer pain, headache, dental pain, and burn pain. The final papers consider particular issues related to dealing with children and the elderly in pain. The volume is characterized by a sensitive and informed approach to hypnosis, recognizing its limitations as well as its benefits. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the First International Sym posium on Suggestion and Suggestibility, held at the University of Giessen in the Federal Republic of Germany, July 7-111987, upon the initiative of and organized by Dr. V. A. Gheorghiu and Dr. P. Netter. I regret that for personal reasons I was unable to accept his kind invita tion to attend, for Dr. Gheorghiu and I are old friends. I am pleased, however, to have this opportunity to call attention to the significance of this volume. Most of the chapters were presented in approximately their present form at the symposium, though some have been extensi vely revised for publication. It was a wise choice to divide the papers into four major sections. - I. Theoretical and Historical Perspectives, II. Assessment and Indivi dual Differences of Suggestibility, III. Psychophysiological Aspects of Suggestibility, and IV. Social and Cognitive Aspects of Suggestive Processes - each with a summarizing commentary. In view of the variety and difficulty of the individual papers, it is a help to have the integration provided by these commentaries - on Part I by Sheehan (Chap. 7), on Part II by Lundy (Chap. 13), on Part III by Edmonston (Chap. 19), and on Part IV by Fiedler (Chap. 30).

Book excerpt: Integrating cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) with hypnosis may increase benefits to clients suffering from a broad range of mental and physical health problems. This practitioner's guide, written by some of the most influential clinical psychologists, educators, and hypnotists, brings together these two methods of treatment and provides a theoretical framework for this integration. By thoroughly reviewing the evidence-based research for the addition of hypnosis to cognitive behavioral treatments and illustrating a variety of clinical applications, the contributors show how the integration can mean productive treatment of clients who might otherwise not have progressed as quickly or successfully. A useful final chapter addresses the process of becoming a practitioner of both CBT and hypnosis.

Book excerpt: Current mainstream opinion in psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy of mind holds that all aspects of human mind and consciousness are generated by physical processes occurring in brains. Views of this sort have dominated recent scholarly publication. The present volume, however, demonstrates empirically that this reductive materialism is not only incomplete but false. The authors systematically marshal evidence for a variety of psychological phenomena that are extremely difficult, and in some cases clearly impossible, to account for in conventional physicalist terms. Topics addressed include phenomena of extreme psychophysical influence, memory, psychological automatisms and secondary personality, near-death experiences and allied phenomena, genius-level creativity, and 'mystical' states of consciousness both spontaneous and drug-induced. The authors further show that these rogue phenomena are more readily accommodated by an alternative 'transmission' or 'filter' theory of mind/brain relations advanced over a century ago by a largely forgotten genius, F. W. H. Myers, and developed further by his friend and colleague William James. This theory, moreover, ratifies the commonsense conception of human beings as causally effective conscious agents, and is fully compatible with leading-edge physics and neuroscience. The book should command the attention of all open-minded persons concerned with the still-unsolved mysteries of the mind.
