The GMC is formally accountable to the Privy Council but "In the absence of a mechanism which makes this accountability effective" the MPs intend to exercise this function themselves on behalf of Parliament. Revalidation of doctors has been under discussion for over 10 years. This is considered too long the GMC is expected to ensure that there are no further delays and that the current target date of late 2012 is achieved. Reviewing the GMC's current proposals MPs warn that too little attention has been given to the issue of how to deal with doctors whose practice gives cause for concern. The Committee is also concerned that the use of the word 'remediation' may have the effect of pre-judging the appropriate response to a particular set of circumstances. In relation to appraisal systems, MPs broadly support the proposal that revalidation should be based on the conclusions of employers' appraisal systems. However, there is evidence showing that the record of employers on appraisal is patchy and the importance of patient and colleague involvement in the appraisal process is emphasised. MPs also felt there should be clear guidance about how Responsible Officers should act when a conflict of interest arises between their responsibility to their employer and their responsibility to the GMC. Finally the issue of doctors for whom English is a second language was considered. As the body responsible for revalidation and with a commitment to introducing it by late 2012, the GMC is expected to satisfy itself that it has the necessary powers to fulfil this role; if it is not satisfied it needs to say so publicly and report to Parliament what changes are necessary to allow it to fulfil its function effectively

The attractiveness of WMNs, in general, is attributed to their characteristics such as the ability to dynamically self-organize and self-con?gure, coupled with the ability to maintain mesh connectivity leading, in effect, to low set-up/installation costs, simpler maintenance tasks, and service coverage with high reliability and fault-tolerance. WMNs also support their integration with existing wireless networks such as cellular networks, WLANs, wireless-?delity (Wi-Fi), and worldwide interoperability of microwave access (WiMAX). WMNs have found u- ful applications in a broad range of domains such as broadband home networking, commercial/business networking, and community networking – particularly attr- tive in offering broadband wireless access with low initial installation and set-up costs. Even though WMNs have emerged to be attractive and they hold great promises for our future, there are several challenges that need to be addressed. Some of the wellknownchallenges areattributedtoissuesrelatingtoscalability(signi?cantdrop in throughput with the increase in the number of nodes), multicasting, offering qu- ity of service guarantees, energy ef?ciency, and security. This handbook attempts to provide a comprehensive guide on fundamental key topics coupled with new ideas and results in the areas of WMNs. Book excerpt: The increasingly lively controversy over scientific realism has become one of the principal themes of recent philosophy. 1 In watching this controversy unfold in the rather technical way currently in vogue, it has seemed to me that it would be useful to view these contemporary disputes against the background of such older epistemological issues as fallibilism, scepticism, relativism, and the traditional realism/idealism debate. This, then, is the object of the present book, which will recon sider the newer concerns about scientific realism in the context of these older philosophical themes. Historically, realism concerns itself with the real existence of things that do not "meet the eye" - with suprasensible entities that lie beyond the reach of human perception. In medieval times, discussions about realism focused upon universals. Recognizing that there are physical objects such as cats and triangular objects and red tomatoes, the medievels debated whether such "abstract objects" as cathood and triangularity and redness also exist by way of having a reality indepen dent of the concretely real things that exhibit them. Three fundamen tally different positions were defended: (1) Nominalism. Abstracta have no independent existence as such: they only "exist" in and through the objects that exhibit them. Only particulars (individual substances) exist. Abstract "objects" are existents in name only, mere thought fictions by whose means we address concrete particular things. (2) Realism. Abstracta have an independent existence as such.
