Book Synopsis Screening Early Modern Drama by : Pascale Aebischer
Download or read book Screening Early Modern Drama written by Pascale Aebischer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While film adaptations of Shakespeare's plays captured the popular imagination at the turn of the last century, independent filmmakers began to adapt the plays of Shakespeare's contemporaries. The roots of their films in European avant-garde cinema and the plays' politically subversive, sexually transgressive and violent subject matter challenge Shakespeare's cultural dominance and the conventions of mainstream cinema. In Screening Early Modern Drama, Pascale Aebischer shows how director Derek Jarman constructed an alternative, dissident approach to filming literary heritage in his 'queer' Caravaggio and Edward II, providing models for subsequent filmmakers such as Mike Figgis, Peter Greenaway, Alex Cox and Sarah Harding. Aebischer explains how the advent of digital video has led to an explosion in low-budget screen versions of early modern drama. The only comprehensive analysis of early modern drama on screen to date, this groundbreaking study also includes an extensive annotated filmography listing forty-eight surviving adaptations.
Book Synopsis Modern Drama and the Rhetoric of Theater by : W. B. Worthen
Download or read book Modern Drama and the Rhetoric of Theater written by W. B. Worthen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of drama is typically viewed as a series of inert "styles." Tracing British and American stage drama from the 1880s onward, W. B. Worthen instead sees drama as the interplay of text, stage production, and audience. How are audiences manipulated? What makes drama meaningful? Worthen identifies three rhetorical strategies that distinguish an O'Neill play from a Yeats, or these two from a Brecht. Where realistic theater relies on the "natural" qualities of the stage scene, poetic theater uses the poet's word, the text, to control performance. Modern political theater, by contrast, openly places the audience at the center of its rhetorical designs, and the drama of the postwar period is shown to develop a range of post-Brechtian practices that make the audience the subject of the play. Worthen's book deserves the attention of any literary critic or serious theatergoer interested in the relationship between modern drama and the spectator.
Download or read book Modern Drama written by Ric Knowles and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2003-12-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theatre, like other subjects in the humanities, has recently undergone quintessential changes in theory, approach, and research. Modern Drama – a collection of twelve essays from leading theatre and drama scholars – investigates the contemporary meanings and the cultural and political resonances of the terms inherent in the concepts of 'modern' and 'drama,' delving into a range of theoretical questions on the history of modernism, modernity, postmodernism, and postmodernity as they have intersected with the shifting histories of drama, theatre, and performance. Using incisive analyses of both modern and postmodern plays, the contributors examine varied topics such as the analysis of periodicity; the articulation of social, political, and cultural production in theatre; the re-evaluation of texts, performances, and canons; and demonstrations of how interdisciplinarity inflects theatre and its practice. Including work by Sue-Ellen Case, Elin Diamond, Harry J. Elam Jr, Alan Filewod, Erika Fischer-Lichte, Stanton B. Garner Jr, Shannon Jackson, Loren Kruger, Josephine Lee, David Savran, Michael Sidnell, and Ann Wilson, the collection highlights the importance of continuing to investigate not only critical texts but also the terms of the debate themselves. Incorporating both drama history and modern studies, this compilation will be an invaluable work to all scholars of theatre and drama, and as well as those students of the humanities and modernism.
Download or read book Drama written by J. L. Styan and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2000 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the elements of drama and the principles behind the reading and study of plays--classical and modern. It makes a special point of seeing drama as intended for acting and performance, and it therefore emphasizes the role of the spectator at a play and the sort of theatre for which drama was written. The performance approach to the study of plays finally clarifies the different kinds of drama (comedy, tragedy, melodrama, and farce) and identifies its forms (realism, stylization, and symbolism). The book draws on specific examples of drama, is rich in helpful charts and diagrams, and contains a comprehensive glossary. Drama will be a useful guide for students and general playgoers alike.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From the Freudians to the feminists, the role of the absent or hidden father figure has played a part in narrative and cultural theory. This work presents the first full-length examination of the absent father in modern drama. It closely analyzes major works by Ibsen, Strindberg, Chekhov, Williams, Miller, Shepard, Rabe, Henley, Norman, Pielmeier, Shaffer, Osborne, Churchill, and Fugard. Using the critical framework of psychological, deconstructive, and myth criticism, this book demonstrates how the consistent focus on an imposing father figure who never physically appears onstage affects the psychological, social, and metaphysical structure of major modern dramas."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
