Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most prominent of President Bush's "thousand points of light" are volunteers who work with our nation's students. The last several decades show considerable growth in the numbers of school volunteers, with increasing participation by people from the business community, retired citizens, and college students, in addition to the traditionally active mothers of school children. Yet, we must do more to ensure the success of volunteer programs in schools. It is not enough to assume that any volunteer effort will produce results, nor is it wise to use volunteers simply because they are "free." This new volume from the National Research Council provides the first overview ever compiled of volunteer activity in U.S. public schoolsâ€"reporting on how volunteers are being used in schools, what factors make programs successful, what further research will enhance our ability to create good programs, and what directions our national policy should take. Included in this study of volunteers in public schools are the reports of the committee's site visits to 13 volunteer programs identified as "exemplary" from Boston Partners in Education to "Project Rescue" for dropout prevention in Corsicana, Texas. Each site report describes local economic conditions and their effects on education, the organization and size of the school system, and the volunteer programâ€"with details on how each program functions and what results have been achieved. This book will be immediately useful to federal, state, and local policymakers, school boards and administrators, principals and teachers, PTA members, business firms involved with schools, and, of course, managers or coordinators of volunteer activities and concerned volunteers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Selection and Training of Volunteers in Child Care In some such instances volunteers have been trained and then left at loose ends for months without being placed. In others, impossibly high requirements as to training or lithe number of hours to be contributed per week have limited the groups of trainees to those women who had much leisure. Such women are not always the ones who take responsibilities most seriously. Many women who could have given a few hours a week were denied the opportunity of doing so because the course involved being away from home 3 days a week. Still other communities found that volun teers could not work satisfactorily without good supervision but failed to provide that supervision before the volunteers were lost. This manual has been prepared in the belief that very careful consider ation is necessary both in the selection of persons who are to be working with children and in the planning of their basic training. It is hoped that use of this material will increase the number of those who, instead of knowing about children, know children. The terms child -care aide and' child -care volunteer are used to desig nate those unpaid workers who assist with the care and guidance of children in any of a great variety of programs such as hospitals, playgrounds, schools, and child-care centers.1 Only those who are in actual contact with children other than their own come under this heading. These volunteers should have completed the requirements of a basic training course for work with children planned and conducted by a child-care committee, a child-care agency, or an educational institution. The course should be approved by the local defense council. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Volunteers-skilled, sensitive, and filled with integrity, sincerity, and perseverance-are often a vital component to the success of any thriving service organization. Their tasks are at the very heart of the organization and communities they serve, yet most volunteers receive little or no formal training before their first assignment. Training Volunteers for Community Service is a much-needed manual for leaders who are charged with the task of training, and preserving, their organization's most valuable asset . . . its volunteers. Techniques presented in this manual are based on expertise gained over 25 years of training, managing, and retaining 12,000 volunteers at San Francisco's Shanti, an internationally recognized provider of volunteer training and direct services to those with chronic and life-threatening illness. Sixteen program modules enable volunteer managers to train their volunteers to provide high quality, compassionate service while increasing volunteer retention. Comprehensive and flexible, Training Volunteers for Community Service is a step-by-step guide for creating a training program that is sourced in an understanding of volunteers' primary motivations and offers trainees a uniquely rewarding training experience. The Trainer's Guide and Participant's Workbook provide methods for instructing volunteers in critical issues-such as listening and communication, psychosocial issues, the volunteer/client relationship, cultural diversity-and offers the tools and information agencies need to train, motivate, and retain volunteers.
