Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Building of a Picture The cry for knowledge how to judge pictures, how to enjoy them, how to make them is a cease less hum in these strenuous days of high endeavor and great ideals. The words set down here in short sentences are the very phrases used again and again in the actual practice of teaching; the very things the practical student and amateur wants to know. The principles upon which pictures are made are the principles by which they must be judged, so those who love art and those who practice it may equally find pleasure and profit in knowing how some successful artists have worked. I am afraid that the following chapters may be open to a similar objection. I fear that a great deal more will be found concerning my own personality and productions than a modest writer would willingly admit; but this cannot easily be avoided. The nature of the information to be conveyed, and the lessons to be inculcated, demand that I should teach the results of my own experience, and suggest that the pictures which have been the outcome of that experience would be the most suitable illustra tions. It will be evident that pictures which have been actually produced by photography will better show the peculiarities and limitations of the art than any other method of illustration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Show Pictures to Children IN preparing the Riverside Art Series for publica tion some years ago, I first came to a full realization of What a picture may mean in a child's life. It is like a magic carpet transporting him to distant realms, or like Aladdin's lamp bringing him for the time being his heart's desire. No figure is too fanciful to express the wondrous capacity it has for quickening the imagination and giving joy. We can hardly overstate its influence upon the mind and character. It is sometimes said that this is a mechanical age and ours is a mercenary, not an art-loving, people. But this is not the testimony which comes from the home and school. The children all love pictures, love to look at them, love to hear about them, love to possess them. And we, who have the shaping of their youthful tastes, are eager to guide them aright. We want to consider what pictures our children like best, and why; What pictures we want them to like, and why; how we can cultivate their taste for the best art, and where we can find the material. Such questions con cern the deep issues of life. If the child's single moment of pleasure were all that was to be con. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Looking at Pictures This little book is an attempt to lift from the minds of people who like pictures in theory and who want to enjoy them in practice the burdensome superstition that to enjoy pictures it is necessary to be a judge of painting. I discovered, while lecturing daily at the National Gallery, that the majority of visitors there were afraid to form, and much more afraid to express, a preference for any picture, for fear of exposing themselves to ridicule, or to the accusation of being in artistic. The bogey of Art with a capital A stood between them and their natural enjoyment of beauty. That was one obstacle. Another, more difficult to overcome, was that most of them believed that incapacity to like, at sight, any notable picture, of any period or nationality, was evidence of something wrong in themselves. They felt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Pictures to See in America It has been no easy task to collect data and photographs from the length and breadth of this great country; in fact, it would have been impossible except for the kindly co-operation of the museum authorities of the various cities in suggesting their best pictures and sending photographs for reproduction. I wish that I might mention by name all who have aided in the work and thus thank them publicly for their assistance. As this is not feasible, the chapters devoted to the various collections will bespeak my appreciation of their wisdom. Book Synopsis Picture Taking and Picture Making (Classic Reprint) by : Eastman Kodak Company
Download or read book Picture Taking and Picture Making (Classic Reprint) written by Eastman Kodak Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Picture Taking and Picture Making This little volume will not tell everything about photography. It will trouble the reader with few technicalities and no theories. In it we shall simply endeavor to start the amateur in the right direction. His own ambitions, tastes and energies will guide him afterwards. Frankly, we shall recommend our own goods in the chapters on apparatus, etc., which are to follow. Years of experience have given us ideas as to how a camera should be made so that it will be best adapted to the amateur's use. In these pages we give to you the results of that experience; in our work shop we build Kodaks in accordance with the ideas this experience has given us. This book and our manufactures are, therefore, in perfect harmony. We do not, however, confine ourselves to goods of our own make, full directions, for instance, being given for working the Platinum, Carbon, Gum Bi-chromate and plain paper processes, none of which use our goods. The other directions for the use of standard goods apply to those of other manufacturers as well as our own. Some of the instructions herein given will already have been read in our manuals by the Kodak owners, yet it is necessary to repeat them for the benefit of those who have not yet made a photographic start, but at the same time the book will contain much information not to be obtained from a mere manual. Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive (Classic Reprint) written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world?
