Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this unique book, you can broaden your knowledge about intriguing natural occurrences like earthquakes, sunspots, and lightning strikes by building and using inexpensive, yet sensitive and accurate, devices for monitoring seismic activity, atmospheric anomalies, and solar disturbances. By combining the more than 40 projects included inside, you can construct your own complete scientific monitoring station! You'd pay thousands for this type of hard-to-find equipment at commercial outlets, yet these devices can be made from readily available parts at an average cost of just $25. Each skill-building project has been field-tested by author Gary G. Giusti, a National Weather Service spotter and longtime student of earthquakes and weather phenomena. Giusti provides a handy parts list and complete instructions for all projects.

Book excerpt: This breakthrough new book may help save countless lives and avoid enormous losses. It presents a methodology for using gas migration to predict earthquakes and explosive gas buildup. Using rigorous scientific investigation and documented worldwide case histories, this remarkable book presents compelling evidence showing that changes in gas rates, composition, and migration accompany the tectronic events preceding earthquakes and their associated seismic events, such as volcanoes and tsunamis. Because these gas parameters are detectable and measurable, they provide an early warning of seismic activity.Gas Migration is the first book to accumulate, analyze and apply the interdisciplinary knowledge on gas migration and detail its connection to tectronic, seismic, and geologic phenomena. It combines geological, geochemical, geophysical, seismological, and petroleum engineering insights to demonstrate how gas migration and its associated phenomena can be used in earthquake and environmental geohazard identification and prediction. Topics include-· Tectonics and Earthquakes· Gas Migration at Plate Boundaries· Surface Soil-Gas Surveys· Faults and Petroleum Reservoirs· Earthquake Precursors· Whispering Gases· Paths and Mechanics of Gas Migration· Subsidence, Gas Migration, and Seismic Activity· And much moreWith this information, environmental specialists, civil engineers, petroleum geologists, seismologists, and urban planners now have a new and powerful conceptual basis and tool for understanding and perhaps even predicting gas explosions and earthquakes.

This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new guide describes the application of spatial technology to improve disaster risk management (DRM) within the aquaculture sector. DRM requires interrelated actions and activities to ensure early warning, prevention, preparedness, response and recovery for a wide range of natural, technological and complex disasters that can impact aquaculture operations and livelihoods. Spatial technology refers to systems and tools that acquire, manage and analyse data that have geographic context. Some of the technologies include satellite remote sensing, aerial surveys, global positioning systems, geographic information systems, information and communication technology and other data gathering sensors used, for instance, in meteorology. Spatial technology supports activities across all phases of the DRM cycle and its rapid development provides enhanced opportunities to support DRM within the aquaculture sector. This guide is organized in two parts. Part one is the “guidance”; it is the main body of the document and describes the processes and steps for the use of spatial technology within DRM for aquaculture. Part two includes selected country case studies from Bangladesh, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, and Indonesia to illustrate the application of spatial technology in DRM for aquaculture at the national level within local contexts. Best practices at the farm and area management levels, supported by spatial technology, reduce volatility and risks and thus facilitate investment. Countries that would like aquaculture to grow sustainably and reliably are encouraged to use this guide in order to support spatial planning approaches and protect responsible investors. A separate summary version accompanies this publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solar Flare SurvivalWe live only 8 light minutes from a massive, tumultuous, unpredictable star. The Sun provides us with the energy to sustain life on our planet, but that gift comes with a price. There has been more intense solar activity in the last 50 years than there has been in the past 11,000 years. As we approach the apexes of both the 11-year solar cycle and the longer Grand Solar Cycle, our Sun is continuing to produce increasingly destructive storms. A proton storm blasted from the Sun can travel as fast as 4 million miles per hour and have the energy of 100 billion atomic bombs. In the last 20 years we have witnessed solar storms powerful enough to destroy most of the electronics on our planet and impact human health. So far none of them have been pointed in our direction. We now know that the question is not if a major event will occur--But when?Solar Flare Survival first discusses what our scientists have learned so far about the Sun and how it affects our planet.Furthur chapters illustrate how the Sun can, and has in the past wreaked havoc on worldwide national power grids, spacecraft, and electronics.Key questions are discussed objectively drawing from some of the latest technology and current scientific studies. How do solar flares affect the human body? Can solar flares trigger earthquakes? Is a Faraday cage that has been designed to withstand a geomagnetic storm adequate for an EMP attack as well?Faraday cage theory, design and construction for the common man.Where to get current alerts and information about extreme space weather, and how to understand them.

Book excerpt: Physics of Geomagnetic phenomena, Volume I covers the significant advances in geomagnetism and the penetrations into the generation of geomagnetic field phenomena. This volume is composed of three chapters. Chapter I deals briefly with the discovery and developments in geomagnetism, followed by discussions on some fundamental topics of the field, including the aurora and geomagnetic storms. This chapter also considers the instruments, geomagnetic stations, and the correlations between geomagnetic indices. Chapter II describes the magnetic properties of minerals and various processes of acquisition of remanent magnetization. This chapter also provides palaeomagnetic data for the direction and intensity of the geomagnetic field in ancient times. Chapter III explores geomagnetic variations caused by solar flares and eclipses. This book will prove useful to physicists, students in upper atmospheric and space topics, and scientists in allied fields with a background in geomagnetism.

Book excerpt: This book contains the papers selected by the Scientific Committee and represented at the XIII International Conference "Solar-Terrestrial Relations and Physics of Earthquake Precursors", which was hold at the Institute of Cosmophysical Research and Radio Wave Propagation, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Kamchatka. The papers describe the investigation results in the fields of atmosphere, ionosphere and magnetosphere physics. Mechanisms of transformation of solar wind energy into the energy of magnetospheric-ionospheric processes, effects of the processes in the Earth core on the lower and upper atmosphere, seismo-electromagnetic, seismo-electric and seismo-acoustic effects at different frequency ranges in the Earth crust, atmosphere and ionosphere are under consideration. Modern methods for geophysical data collection, processing, transfer and exchange as well as organisation issues of seismic activity monitoring are presented. The Conference "Solar-Terrestrial Relations and Physics of Earthquake Precursors" has 25 years of history. Scientists from Russia, Japan, Hungary, China, India, USA and other countries participate in it. In a traditional way, the Conference includes three sections: atmosphere physics, geophysical fields and their interaction, physics of earthquake precursors.
