Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most households all over the world take electricity for granted: one flick of a switch on and a room is illuminated or a fan starts running or hot water begins to flow from a geyser. In reality, the entire process of generation of electricity in power plants and its journey to houses or wherever else at the point of use, is quite complicated, involving various stages. It is important for all users to know some aspects of electricity for its safe and cost-effective usage. Likewise, it would be very desirable to have some idea of working of commonly used electrical gadgets in a typical household for their proper use over years. The present book, based on decades of experience of the author as a professional electrical engineer, describes all aspects of electricity into a house, including its safe use, and working of a multitude of electrical appliances, from simple illumination devices, fans, ACs, geysers to gadgets in kitchens such as a mixie, oven and induction stove, that would ideally need some knowledge of their working for their efficient and trouble-free operation. An important feature of the book is the detailed discussion concerning renewal sources of electricity generation, esp. electricity from the Sun and how this is going to be THE energy of future in a matter of a few decades. PART - A ELECTRICITY – General, What it is and where does it come from, PART - B Know Your Appliances, Inside the House: General, Inside Kitchen, ... And as a Matter of Interest . . . 10must-have gadgets for your kitchen, Inside Bathroom, ... Some Added Information on Thermostats and Timers, Miscellaneous, PART C - Entertainment Electronics, PART D - Electrical Energy for the Future, Electricity to the Earth in Future, Concluding Remarks

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves into the early days of electrical appliance development when many novel and little known appliances were made. The manufacture and operation of some of these inventions encountered seemingly insurmountable problems at the time - the first toaster, for example, would often shoot the toast high into the air, and the toast was occasionally on fire - but many are now revived in some of the latest appliances we use today. This is an ideal one-stop informative book which looks at every aspect of early electrical appliances, from the Harness electropathic corset and head-ache curing electric hairbrush of the Victorian fashion world to the tea parties at which guests watched vacuum-cleaning displays.

Book excerpt: Household appliances encompass a large variety of equipment including the cold appliances (refrigerators and freezers), the wet appliances (washing machines, dishwashers and dryers), the space conditioning appliances (heaters, air conditioners, heat pumps, fans, boilers), the water heaters, the cooking appliances, a wide array of consumer electronics (such as TVs, VCRs, HiFi systems) and miscellaneous small appliances (such as vacuum cleaners, irons, toasters, hairdryers and power tools). Household appliances save a large amount of domestic labour to perform the household tasks, as well as provide comfort conditions and convenience to the household occupants. The European Community SAVE Programme has promoted the efficient use of energy, in particular in domestic appliances. SAVE has sponsored a variety of studies to characterise the use of the main household appliances and lighting and to identify cost-effective technical options to improve the energy efficiency, as well as to identify the strategies to promote the penetration ofefficient equipment in the market place. National energy agencies, independent experts and appliance manufacturers have participated in the SAVE activities and have done a remarkable job. While the energy efficiency ofthe main household appliances has been improved, at the same time it was possible in most cases to improve the appliance performance, reliability and qualityofservice.

Book excerpt: The transformative effect of technological change on households and culture, seen from a macroeconomic perspective through simple economic models. In Evolving Households, Jeremy Greenwood argues that technological progress has had as significant an effect on households as it had on industry. Taking a macroeconomic perspective, Greenwood develops simple economic models to study such phenomena as the rise in married female labor force participation, changes in fertility rates, the decline in marriage, and increased longevity. These trends represent a dramatic transformation in everyday life, and they were made possible by advancements in technology. Greenwood also addresses how technological progress can cause social change. Greenwood shows, for example, how electricity and labor-saving appliances freed women from full-time household drudgery and enabled them to enter the labor market. He explains that fertility dropped when higher wages increased the opportunity cost of having children; he attributes the post–World War II baby boom to a combination of labor-saving household technology and advances in obstetrics and pediatrics. Marriage rates declined when single households became more economically feasible; people could be more discriminating in their choice of a mate. Technological progress also affects social and cultural norms. Innovation in contraception ushered in a sexual revolution. Labor-saving technological progress at home, together with mechanization in industry that led to an increase in the value of brain relative to brawn for jobs, fostered the advancement of women's rights in the workplace. Finally, Greenwood attributes increased longevity to advances in medical technology and rising living standards, and he examines healthcare spending, the development of new drugs, and the growing portion of life now spent in retirement.

Book excerpt: In IEA Member countries, electrical appliances are the fastest growing energy users, after automobiles. Cost-effective technology exists that could improve the energy efficiency of appliances by more than one-third in ten years. Through application of such technology, the greenhouse gases emitted as a result of the use of appliances in IEA Member countries alone could be slashed by the equivalent of 322 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2010. This book assesses the potential energy savings and carbon reductions to be achieved through technical improvements to appliances. It analyses the policy options available to stimulate greater manufacture and use of more efficient appliances. It suggests ways to strengthen existing appliance-efficiency programmes, and it demonstrates how international collaboration can enhance those programmes (IEA Website)

Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Demand-Side Management and Electricity End-Use Efficiency" was held in order to present and to discuss some of the most recent developments in demand-side electric power management and planning methodologies as well as research progress in relevant end-use technologies. Electricity is assuming an increasingly important role in buildings and industry, due to its flexibility, efficiency of conversion and cleanliness at the point of use. However the production and transmission of electricity requires huge investments and may have undesirable environmental impacts. The recent nuclear accident in Chernobyl and the damage caused by acid precipitation are creating increasing concerns about the impacts of power plants. Some environmental problems are local or regional, others such as global warming can affect the whole world. Although environmental impacts may be minimized with additional investments, electricity generation will become even more capital intensive. Energy, and electricity in particular, is not directly consumed by people. To achieve improved standards of living, what is important is. the level of production of goods and services. If it is possible to produce the same quantity of goods and services with less electricity and in a cost-effective way, substantial benefits can be gained. By reducing costs, electricity efficiency can raise the standards of living and increase the competitiveness of an economy. Electricity efficiency also leads to reduced requirements in power plant operation, thus leading to reduced consumption of primary energy supplies and a higher quality environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American business has recently been under fire, charged with inflated pricing and an inability to compete in the international marketplace. However, the evidence presented in this volume shows that the business community has been unfairly maligned—official measures of inflation and the standard of living have failed to account for progress in the quality of business equipment and consumer goods. Businesses have actually achieved higher productivity at lower prices, and new goods are lighter, faster, more energy efficient, and more reliable than their predecessors. Robert J. Gordon has written the first full-scale work to treat the extent of quality changes over the entire range of durable goods, from autos to aircraft, computers to compressors, from televisions to tractors. He combines and extends existing methods of measurement, drawing data from industry sources, Consumer Reports, and the venerable Sears catalog. Beyond his important finding that the American economy is more sound than officially recognized, Gordon provides a wealth of anecdotes tracing the postwar history of technological progress. Bolstering his argument that improved quality must be accurately measured, Gordon notes, for example, that today's mid-range personal computers outperform the multimillion-dollar mainframes of the 1970s. This remarkable book will be essential reading for economists and those in the business community.
