Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Horsemastership A number Of horse-lovers, who have been kind enough to peruse Modern Horse Management, have asked me why I do not publish a few notes on the care of the horse now that hostilities have ceased. As a matter of fact, the book referred to above was published a considerable time after the war commenced, and since that date I have taken various notes from lessons learnt whilst connected with horses in the Cavalry for over three years in France. During the earlier days of the war, when I was attached to the Infantry, I always went out of my way to study the all-important art of Modern Horsemastership. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse Training by Modern Methods The object of this book is to arrange in the most convenient, clear, and concise form the modern system of horse-training, in so far as it is applicable to the training of horses in the mounted service of the United States. No attempt has been made in any case to improve upon methods already deemed correctly the best horsemen; and as such methods can be found dealing with all points of training, it follows that the subject matter in this book is not original. Where the best was to be found, there it has been sought, and where the authors of previous works have expressed their ideas in language considered the most concise and clear, their words have been copied verbatim, with due acknowledgement to the authors. Book excerpt: The horse we have in our stable is the horse we make, The Marquis Mac Swiney of Mashanaglass reminds us.Whether this horse is a youngster that is the proverbial "clean slate," or an older horse in need of re-schooling back to basics as a result of mishandling, this book shows the reader how to approach horses in a way that makes real sense to them. In the first part of the book the author discusses equine ethology and psychology to help the reader understand better the nature of horses in general, before focusing on the practicalities of educating a horse. The second part of the book presents a logical sequence of training in which the pupil is carefully taught the necessary stable manners, introduced to the halter and bridle, to longeing and to the basics of work on the long reins to learn the aids. The author shows that all this can be accomplished with patience, gentleness and understanding and the result is a confident horse that is happy in his work and thoroughly prepared for backing.Easy to read and understand, this classic book deserves a place of honor on every horseman's bookshelf.

Even after more than twenty three centuries it is still, in the main, a sound and excellent guide for so much of the field as it covers. This fact, together with the simple and delightful manner in which the subject is treated, has led me to think that some who are not able or do not care to approach the book in the original Greek, might like'to read a translation of the earli est known work on the horse and how to ride him. To be sure, there have already been versions in English; but these seem to me, and have seemed to others, unsatisfactory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Stable and Saddle-Room So many books have been written on horses and stable management, that in commencing the present little work I feel that I am but about to traverse ground which has been 'over-trodden' - nay, 'churned up' - by those who have been in the field before me, and that the subject is already too well worn to admit of yet another treatise upon it being produced. I hope, however, that such may prove not to be the case, inasmuch as since it is indisputable that no two people entertain quite the same ideas on any subject, I may be able, I trust, to view the one at present before me, and treat the same, in a somewhat different manner to my predecessors. What has invariably struck me in perusing the many books on horses and their management which have been already before the public, is, as a rule, their want of simplicity. They appear to me to be rather mystifying than instructive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Saddle-Horse: A Complete Guide for Riding and Training The young horse soon becomes tractable, and, as long as his temper is unruffied, he desires to do that which is required of him. Until the spirit of rebellion is awak ened, he is as anxious to avoid the perils of battle as his master should be. If, upon an occasion, he declines to perform some movement that is required of him, let his attention he turned to that which will please him, and his obedience in this will induce his obedience afterwards to the first demand. To give up to him after a battle will confirm his obstinacy, but he will soon forget his unnoticed defiance. Under proper treatment he will in time yield to the will of his master, without dreaming of resistance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In order to excel in any branch we must have method and a combina tion of theory and practice. It has been the author's duty as an instructor at the Cavalry School to study the subject thoroughly, and in placing his experience and methods before the public he is voluntarily giving away valuable knowledge. A portion of this book was written by the author at my request and published in the Cavalry Journal as part of a series on horse training, which appeared in the numbers published in 1912. I heartily commend these pages to my brother officers, and feel sure that they will be read with equal interest by all horsemen, whether military or civilian. J. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic in its field and once an official textbook of the U.S. Cavalry School, located in Fort Riley, Kansas, this manual influenced the professional development of horse Cavalrymen during the last years of the mounted services in U.S. Army. Long out of print, its reappearance will be welcomed by all who share an interest in horse lore, and especially by Cavalry veterans who refined their own equestrian skills in accordance with its principles. These two volumes (in one book) are veritable classics of the American equestrian tradition. Originally written as manuals used to train recruits and remounts (horses) for the Cavalry, they contain timeless information and methods that can be applied by horsemen and horsewomen of all disciplines today. The truths contained in these pages are universal. These texts were written to devise a system by which ordinary lay people (recruits) could be taught to ride in a pragmatic, easy-to-follow method. Further, the method for teaching Horsemanship: Part I was devised so that it did not rely on the rider's inherent talent for riding (or lack thereof.) The beauty of the method, is that it is democratic and pragmatic in its approach. Similarly, the training of the horse outlined in Horsemastership: Part II, is applicable to grade horses irrespective of their innate ride-ability or trainability. The Cavalry came by horses by a variety of means and the stock was of varied talent. The methods outlined in Part II when applied, and followed, will work with most any horse. What was true 80-100 years ago is still relevant today; equine nature has not changed in the past 100 years.
