Each routine incorporates the following skill categories: long tones and mouthpiece buzzing, crescendo/diminuendo, lip slurs, accuracy and dynamic changes, alternating tongued and slurred between intervals, articulation and technique, high and low playing. By applying these skill categories as a template to each routine, students are sure to develop all of their skills equally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a result of Eli Epstein's 18 years in the Cleveland Orchestra and 30 years of Conservatoire teaching. It breaks down into four parts, dealing with Technique, Musicianship, Warm up and Exercises and finally Applying the Method. It is both innovative and inspiring and presents his theories in a clear and understandable way, which gives the reader much to think about and practical ideas to help improve one's playing. An excellent addition to any horn enthusiast's collection. The third edition presents MRI images and data of an elite group of horn players, including Stefan Dohr, Fergus McWilliam, Sarah Willis, Stefan Jezierski (all of the Berlin Philharmonic), Marie-Luise Neunecker, Jeff Nelsen, and others. MRI films confirm that what we do internally, inside the mouth, pharynx, and thoracic cavity is just as important as what we do externally. And, just as there are hallmarks of healthy embouchures that most professional horn players employ, there are many consistent internal movement patterns among the elite group. Epstein presents tried and true methods to learn and teach these exemplary biomechanics. "Without a doubt the most physiologically correct book ever published on horn playing." ~John Ericson, Horn Matters

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to help beginners play the French horn. The book includes 45 diagrams with fingering positions and staff notation for 3 different types of French horns. The musical notes cover almost 6 octaves. The most basic type of French horn (because of its lightweight, easy playability, and low cost) is the single horn. Also, it is the most popular choice for beginning students. The main difference between single and double French horns is the number of valve slides per rotor. In general, single horns have one valve slide per rotor, while double horns have two. Two tubing sets make the double horn heavier and more complicated to use than the single French horn. These fingering charts are suitable for F and Bb single horns and F/Bb double horns. While the F single French horn has 3 buttons, both the F/Bb double French horn and the Bb single French horn have 4 buttons, the extra being for the thumb. The numbers of buttons that are colored are those that need to be pressed to play the given note. You can cut out the charts or use them directly from the booklet. The size of the cut-out is 6.5x10 inches (16x25 cm).

The Art of French Horn Playing set the pattern, and other books in the series soon followed, offering help to students in learning to master their instruments and achieve their goals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The progression of heart disease is associated with changes in the neurohumoral mechanisms that control cardiac function. The degree to which this neurohumoral remodeling occurs, even before overt signs of cardiac disease become manifest, is important for prognosis. To determine why some patients experience sudden death while others sustain life in the presence of severely compromised cardiac function, the neuronal control of cardiac electrical and mechanical events must be considered. Starting at the level of individual neurons and building upwards, this book describes the synergistic interactions that occur among intrathoracic and CNS feedback loops to permit precise control of regional cardiac behavior. On this basic science foundation, subsequent clinical chapters explore the remodeling that occurs in this system with aging, with the evolution of specific cardiac pathologies, and with the psychological concomitants of heart disease. Most importantly, these chapters provide unique insights into how specific therapies like beta-andrenergic receptor blockade not only affect cardiomyocytes directly but also mitigate the adverse neurohumoral changes that accompany disease processes, such as heart failure and essential hypertension. The paradigm advanced in this volume is that heart disease is a multifaceted phenomenon involving the interplay of neurohumoral, cardiomyocyte and structural elements, each of which depends on the other. With our cumulative understanding of these interdependent processes, new avenues for time-appropriate, targeted methods of treating heart diseases can be developed.
