Download or read book Horizon Note written by Robin Behn and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2001-09-25 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A son is born too early, as if coming up over the horizon before his own dawn. An elderly father lingers at life’s other horizon. In language dense and clear, playful and somber, and with a formal exactitude and emotional amplitude suggestive of her own musical training, Behn traverses these horizons “extracting,” like the horizon note that drones through traditional Indian music, “a red needle from the sky.”

Book Synopsis Stocks, Bonds, And The Investment Horizon: Decision-making For The Long Run by : Haim Levy
Download or read book Stocks, Bonds, And The Investment Horizon: Decision-making For The Long Run written by Haim Levy and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-04-28 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, life expectancy was roughly 40 years, hence all income could be consumed, as for most people, there was no need to save for retirement. Today, things have drastically changed: Life expectancy exceeds 80 years in many countries, and one should expect to live and consume many years after retirement. Thus, we have many investors with various investment horizons, where the length of the investment horizon becomes a crucial factor in determining the best investment diversification. This book analyzes the effect of the investment horizon on the optimal diversification, specifically between stocks and bonds: Should a young investor and an older investor have the same portfolio? Is it recommended to savers for retirement to change the asset allocation between stocks and bonds as they grow older, as life cycle mutual funds do in practice? Is the idiom 'stocks for the long run' backed by scientific evidence? We analyze for which horizons it is recommended to employ the popular Mean-Variance rule and for which horizons employing this rule induces an economic distortion, hence a loss to the investors. It is shown that all relevant parameters for investment choice (means, variances, and correlations) change in a non-linear way with the horizon, a fact that makes the investment horizon crucial for investment choices. Similarly, the popular Sharpe, Treynor, and Jensen performance indices vary with the assumed horizon even in the case of independence over time. To analyze all the above issues, we employ the Mean-Variance rule and Stochastic Dominance rules, as well as direct expected utility calculations.
Book Synopsis Stabilization of Nonlinear Systems Using Receding-horizon Control Schemes by : Mazen Alamir
Download or read book Stabilization of Nonlinear Systems Using Receding-horizon Control Schemes written by Mazen Alamir and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-09-29 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While conceptually elegant, the generic formulations of nonlinear model predictive control are not ready to use for the stabilization of relatively fast systems. This book presents a successful approach to this problem based on a co-operation between structural considerations and on-line optimization. It also provides research showing how generic predictive control schemes can be extended from slow process-based systems to a variety of fast systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even centuries later, the final decades of the twentieth century are still regarded as one of the darkest and most perilous chapters in the history of humanity Now, as an ancient and forbidden technology tempts mankind once more, Captain James T. Kirk of the "Starship Enterprise(TM)" must probe deep into the secrets of the past, to discover the true origins of the dreaded Eugenics Wars -- and of perhaps the greatest foe he has ever faced. 1974 A.D. An international consortium of the world's top scientists have conspired to create the Chrysalis Project, a top-secret experiment in human genetic engineering. The project's goal is the creation of a new super-race to take command of the entire planet. Gary Seven, an undercover operative for an advanced alien species, is alarmed by the project's objectives; he knows too well the apocalyptic consequences of genetic manipulation. But he may already be too late. One generation of super-humans has already been conceived. Seven watches as the children of Chrysalis-in particular, a brilliant youth named Khan Noonien Singh -- grow to adulthood. Can Khan's dark destiny be averted -- or is Earth doomed to fight Singh a global battle for supremacy? "The Eugenics Wars: Volume One" is a fast-paced thriller that explores the rise of the conqueror known as Khan.

Book Synopsis String Theory Methods for Condensed Matter Physics by : Horatiu Nastase
Download or read book String Theory Methods for Condensed Matter Physics written by Horatiu Nastase and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of a duality between Anti-de Sitter spaces (AdS) and Conformal Field Theories (CFT) has led to major advances in our understanding of quantum field theory and quantum gravity. String theory methods and AdS/CFT correspondence maps provide new ways to think about difficult condensed matter problems. String theory methods based on the AdS/CFT correspondence allow us to transform problems so they have weak interactions and can be solved more easily. They can also help map problems to different descriptions, for instance mapping the description of a fluid using the Navier-Stokes equations to the description of an event horizon of a black hole using Einstein's equations. This textbook covers the applications of string theory methods and the mathematics of AdS/CFT to areas of condensed matter physics. Bridging the gap between string theory and condensed matter, this is a valuable textbook for students and researchers in both fields.
