Book excerpt: Demonstrating compassion, courage, and generosity in the face of adversity, this autobiography tells the story of a remarkable Burmese American immigrant, venerated eye surgeon, and mother to 21 sponsored and natural-born children who undertook a remarkable quest to restore hope and dignity to sight-deprived and disadvantaged people all over the world. At the age of seven, Aisha Simjee contracted and recovered from trachoma—the world's leading cause of preventable blindness—which fueled her desire to become an eye doctor. While a revolution rocked her homeland and in spite of the consternation of her traditional Muslim family, she triumphed as the first woman in her tribe of Indian heritage to graduate from high school, going on to attend college and medical school and eventually fleeing the country for America. She is now a board-certified ophthalmologist with a busy medical practice in Southern California and has traveled solo and with medical humanitarian volunteer agencies, performing corneal transplants and cataract surgeries throughout the world, including Colombia, Myanmar, Egypt, Cambodia, Haiti, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, as well as caring for the sight-deprived poor in her own backyard. Her story not only brings focus to global health challenges but also serves as encouragement to all of us to live more productive and meaningful lives.

Book excerpt: "In SigHT, Dr. Amanishakete Ani takes an introspective look at the thought and behavioral processes of African American students who apparently have many of the answers to what must be done to end achievement problems in the community, and restore success and dignity back to the Pan African community. In addition to intensive interviews of six junior high school achievers, historical analyses that relate to contemporary problems in education and society are provided. It is conclued that hope for the future depends on cultural and social awareness, not better school districts or even teacher quality.--page 4 of cover

Through the imaginative retelling of 35 Bible stories, Not by Sight gives us glimpses of what it means to walk by faith and counsel for how to trust God's promises more than our perceptions and to find rest in the faithfulness of God.

Book excerpt: “[A] landmark book . . . Solnit illustrates how the uprisings that begin on the streets can upend the status quo and topple authoritarian regimes” (Vice). A book as powerful and influential as Rebecca Solnit’s Men Explain Things to Me, her Hope in the Dark was written to counter the despair of activists at a moment when they were focused on their losses and had turned their back to the victories behind them—and the unimaginable changes soon to come. In it, she makes a radical case for hope as a commitment to act in a world whose future remains uncertain and unknowable. Drawing on her decades of activism and a wide reading of environmental, cultural, and political history, Solnit argues that radicals have a long, neglected history of transformative victories, that the positive consequences of our acts are not always immediately seen, directly knowable, or even measurable, and that pessimism and despair rest on an unwarranted confidence about what is going to happen next. Now, with a moving new introduction explaining how the book came about and a new afterword that helps teach us how to hope and act in our unnerving world, she brings a new illumination to the darkness of our times in an unforgettable new edition of this classic book. “One of the best books of the 21st century.” —The Guardian “No writer has better understood the mix of fear and possibility, peril and exuberance that’s marked this new millennium.” —Bill McKibben, New York Times–bestselling author of Falter “An elegant reminder that activist victories are easily forgotten, and that they often come in extremely unexpected, roundabout ways.” —The New Yorker

Book excerpt: In this New York Times bestseller, Isaac Lidsky draws on his experience of achieving immense success, joy, and fulfillment while losing his sight to a blinding disease to show us that it isn’t external circumstances, but how we perceive and respond to them, that governs our reality. Fear has a tendency to give us tunnel vision—we fill the unknown with our worst imaginings and cling to what’s familiar. But when confronted with new challenges, we need to think more broadly and adapt. When Isaac Lidsky learned that he was beginning to go blind at age thirteen, eventually losing his sight entirely by the time he was twenty-five, he initially thought that blindness would mean an end to his early success and his hopes for the future. Paradoxically, losing his sight gave him the vision to take responsibility for his reality and thrive. Lidsky graduated from Harvard College at age nineteen, served as a Supreme Court law clerk, fathered four children, and turned a failing construction subcontractor into a highly profitable business. Whether we’re blind or not, our vision is limited by our past experiences, biases, and emotions. Lidsky shows us how we can overcome paralyzing fears, avoid falling prey to our own assumptions and faulty leaps of logic, silence our inner critic, harness our strength, and live with open hearts and minds. In sharing his hard-won insights, Lidsky shows us how we too can confront life's trials with initiative, humor, and grace.

Book excerpt: Once a carny, always a carny… When Fiona's estranged stepbrother calls asking for help, she's pretty sure the apocalypse has arrived. Because Max walked away from her—and the carnival they called home—years ago, and only silence has filled the decade between them. But Special Agent Max's FBI safe house has been exposed, and he's desperate for a place to stash his young murder witness. Fi is tempted to show him the door but said witness is just an innocent kid, and no matter the tangled, painful mess between them, Fiona can't bring herself to abandon a child. Unlike Fi, retired Army Ranger Rye Wilder has no problem coming to the rescue when his friend and former Ranger Max calls, especially if it means finally laying eyes on the mysterious Fiona, a woman whose image has haunted Rye since he first laid eyes on the worn photo in Max's wallet. A man with no one to call his own, Rye has never understood Max's desertion of his sister, and the opportunity to witness the reunion is too tempting to resist. Because family is precious and rare and a gift to be protected—something Rye is determined to make them both understand. But first Max has to unmask a mole. Fiona has to safeguard an innocent girl against the man hunting her. And Rye… Rye has to keep everyone alive. An intense, suspenseful romantic thriller with characters you won't forget. Book excerpt: When all seems lost, where can you find hope? Katherine and Jay Wolf married right after college and sought adventure far from home in Los Angeles, CA. As they pursued their dreams--she as a model and he as a lawyer--they planted their lives in the city and their church community. Their son, James, came along unexpectedly in the fall of 2007, and just six months later, everything changed in a moment for this young family. On April 21, 2008, as James slept in the other room, Katherine collapsed, suffering a massive brain stem stroke without warning. Miraculously, Jay came home in time and called for help. Katherine was immediately rushed into brain surgery, though her chance of survival was slim. As the sun rose the next morning, the surgeon proclaimed that Katherine had survived the removal of part of her brain, though her future recovery was uncertain. Yet in that moment, there was a spark of hope. Through forty days on life support in the ICU and nearly two years in full-time brain rehab, that small spark of hope was fanned into flame. Hope Heals documents Katherine and Jay's journey as they struggled to regain Katherine's quality of life and as she relearned to talk, eat, and walk. As Katherine returned home with a severely disabled body but a completely renewed purpose, she and Jay committed to celebrating this gift of a second chance by embracing life fully, even though that life looked very different than they could have ever imagined. As you uncover Katherine and Jay's remarkable story, you'll be encouraged to: Find lasting hope in the midst of struggle Embrace the unexpected Welcome God's miracles into your everyday life In the midst of continuing hardships, both in body and mind, Katherine and Jay found what we all long to find: a hope that heals the most broken place--our souls. Let Hope Heals be your guide along the way. Praise for Hope Heals: "As I read this book, tears streamed from my eyes even as joy flooded my heart. Jay and Katherine are a raw yet refreshing testimony to the unshakable trustworthiness of God amidst the unimaginable trials of life. This book reminds all of us where hope can be found in a world where none of us know what the next day holds." --David Platt, author of the New York Times bestseller Radical and president of the International Mission Board "Hope Heals is a beautiful, true story that illustrates the love and protection God has for us even in the darkest times of our lives. Katherine and Jay's dedication to each other and the Lord through their most devastating season is inspiring. This book will help your heart believe that He sees, He knows, He cares, and He is still working miracles today!" --Lysa TerKeurst, New York Times bestselling author and president of Proverbs 31 Ministries

Now, Hope immerses herself in science, where the world is concrete and definite, unwilling to entertain faith ever again. Hope is dismayed to find that Rick, the interesting new man in her life, considers faith an important part of his existence. No matter how much she enjoys Rick's company, she determines he cannot be the man for her. Never again will she trust God the way she did before her mother's death. But the more Hope comes to know Rick, the harder he is to resist. And when she meets his family, she finds herself falling in love with them, as well. Hope's lonely heart longs to be part of this family forever--but that might require her to trust in God once again.

Book excerpt: A provocative analysis of labor, globalization, and environmental harm by the award-winning historian and author of A History of America in Ten Strikes. In the current state of our globalized economy, corporations have no incentive to protect their workers or the environment. Jobs moves seamlessly across national borders while the laws that protect us from rapacious behavior remain bound by them. As a result, labor exploitation and toxic pollution remain standard practice. In Out of Sight, Erik Loomis—a historian of both the labor and environmental movements—follows a narrative that runs from the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City to the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory outside of Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2013. He demonstrates that our modern systems of industrial production are just as dirty and abusive as they were during the Industrial Revolution and the Gilded Age. The only difference is that the ugly side of manufacturing is now hidden in faraway places where workers are most vulnerable. In this Choice Outstanding Academic Title, Loomis shows that the great environmental victories of twentieth-century America—the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the EPA—were actually union victories. Using this history as a call to action, Out of Sight proposes a path toward regulations that follow corporations wherever they do business, putting the power back in workers’ hands. “The story told here is tragic and important.” —Bill McKibben “Erik Loomis prescribes how activists can take back our country—for workers and those who care about the health of our planet.” —Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH)
