Skye Delaney is a private investigator, security consultant, and ex-cop who lives in Waikiki. When her ex-husband and former prosecutor turned businessman, Carter Delaney, asks her to find out if his new wife Darlene is having an affair, Skye reluctantly agrees to take the case. Little does she know that it will turn out to be far more than infidelity. Skye confirms that Darlene is not only having an affair but also doing drugs. But before Skye can tell this to Carter, she finds him dead in her Jacuzzi bathtub with an apparent suicide note stuffed in his mouth. Did he really take his own life with so much to live for? Or was Carter murdered? The one thing she knows for sure is that her German Shepherd Ollie bit an intruder who happened to have AB negative blood. As did Carter. Coincidence? Skye’s current love interest is Ridge Larsen, a homicide detective for the Honolulu Police Department, who also happens to be assigned to this case once it becomes official that Carter Delaney was murdered. As Skye continues to delve deeper and deeper into the investigation of Carter’s death, it becomes apparent to her that her ex had many secrets and just as many enemies, making him a marked man. These included working for the Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney as a consultant on a case involving a crime syndicate, being a gambling addict, and being in debt to a loan shark. While the bodies continue to pile up, Skye puts her neck on the line to find out the truth and nail a ruthless killer who has targeted her for death; even as she tries to maintain her professional objectivity and balance it with her private and romantic life.
Book Synopsis Aloha Rainbow by : Elizabeth Whitmer
Download or read book Aloha Rainbow written by Elizabeth Whitmer and published by Aloha Rainbow. This book was released on 2006-11 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawn to a land of lava, ice, and sea - three previous hockey teammates leave dreary Detroit and buy historic La`Ohana Inn in sunny Kona. As temperate and as fierce as Hawaii's nature, this accountant, teacher, and physician become indispensable to neighbors and friends who are intent on sharing Aloha. At sunset Catherine Kievers drives the beautiful and desolate sea plain to Pu'uhonau O Honaunau searching for Livia Hinman, whose aunt died that morning in Indiana. Long before dawn, Cate recognized this day as a day of sorrow. Both women have witnessed a rainbow on opposite shores of The Big Island. Now facing moonlit totems and looming Pacific, Cate prepares to phone Margaret Brown and informs her of a futile search. Thanksgiving and Christmas come a bit bleak, until neighbor Tom Smith stops by and asks if La`Ohana Inn will sponsor weekly Keiki Pony Rides. He and partner Tim Boki run nearby Queens' Stables, and they add plenty of spice and angst to the women's lives. Elderly Chakra Kuhanamana falls on the highway near the inn's mailbox, and Margaret earns the nickname 'The Good Doctor' after treating the kupuna and her brother Aye Noelani. This interesting couple sponsors an old-fashioned hukilau, and they are invited to move back to the Caretaker's Cottage. Pele and Poliahu take notice. Veterinarian Richard Header becomes The Good Doctor's doctor and the island's most elusive pedophile. Hilo's mysterious Ma Loa Hakkalani appears and lends plenty of intrigue and plenty of trouble. Hockey buddies and an old friend visit and find it hard to leave. Then something truly amazing happens, and the story culminates with a double rainbow. Steeled by experience three individuals are ready to become kahuna.

Book Synopsis The Problem of Pleasure by : Carol Jones
Download or read book The Problem of Pleasure written by Carol Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tourism and leisure industries are big business. Opportunities for leisure and tourism have escalated as disposable income, technology, travel and education have become increasingly available in recent times. However, this trend has been juxtaposed with an increase in crime, particularly since the early the 1950s. Acquisitive crimes have been facilitated with the development of more portable and valuable commodities; some activities, such as drink driving and disorder, have now been socially defined as crimes and are more readily identified through new technology such as the increasing use of CCTV. The Problem of Pleasure covers them all. The purpose of this book is to inform and enlighten a range of readers, whose interests may be academic or commercial on possible crime events and modus operandi of criminals. The book has a global perspective, bringing together leading academics from the UK, the US, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand who examine several aspects of leisure that are vulnerable to crime, from illegal hunting to street racing, as well as the impact of crime upon tourists and the tourism industry. This book will be a key text for students of tourism and leisure as well as criminology and sociology; people working in the tourism and recreation industry; policy makers and the police.
Book Synopsis The Crime of All Crimes by : Nicole Rafter
Download or read book The Crime of All Crimes written by Nicole Rafter and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2016-03-29 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cambodia. Rwanda. Armenia. Nazi Germany. History remembers these places as the sites of unspeakable crimes against humanity, and indisputably, of genocide. Yet, throughout the twentieth century, the world has seen many instances of violence committed by states against certain groups within their borders—from the colonial ethnic cleansing the Germans committed against the Herero tribe in Africa, to the Katyn Forest Massacre, in which the Soviets shot over 20,000 Poles, to anti-communist mass murders in 1960s Indonesia. Are mass crimes against humanity like these still genocide? And how can an understanding of crime and criminals shed new light on how genocide—the “crime of all crimes”—transpires? In The Crime of All Crimes, criminologist Nicole Rafter takes an innovative approach to the study of genocide by comparing eight diverse genocides--large-scale and small; well-known and obscure—through the lens of criminal behavior. Rafter explores different models of genocidal activity, reflecting on the popular use of the Holocaust as a model for genocide and ways in which other genocides conform to different patterns. For instance, Rafter questions the assumption that only ethnic groups are targeted for genocidal “cleansing," and she also urges that actions such as genocidal rape be considered alongside traditional instances of genocidal violence. Further, by examining the causes of genocide on different levels, Rafter is able to construct profiles of typical victims and perpetrators and discuss means of preventing genocide, in addition to delving into the social psychology of genocidal behavior and the ways in which genocides are brought to an end. A sweeping and innovative investigation into the most tragic of events in the modern world, The Crime of All Crimes will fundamentally change how we think about genocide in the present day.
