Book Synopsis A Hospital in Homs by : Khalid Shibib
Download or read book A Hospital in Homs written by Khalid Shibib and published by E-Kutub Ltd. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel tells the story of a young Syrian doctor whom the Ministry of Health sent from the capital Damascus to the city of Homs as part of his -post graduate education in late 2010. He witnessed how the city and the country went into full-scale civil war in 2011. The conflict between the regime, dominated by the Ba’ath Party under President Bashar El Assad and a fragmented but widely-supported, increasingly Islamist- dominated opposition has devastated the country and caused the deaths of over 150,000 persons, injuries of several hundred thousand and the displacement of almost half of Syria`s 23 million population during the three years of the conflict (2011-2013). Homs city is in central Syria, where one million Syrians used to live. It is the epicentre of this conflict and was the first major city to be contested and divided between the conflicting parties. The novel describes how over three years, the conflict totally changed the city, the hospital and the person himself.
Book Synopsis Historic Cities of the Islamic World by : Clifford Edmund Bosworth
Download or read book Historic Cities of the Islamic World written by Clifford Edmund Bosworth and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains articles on historic cities of the Islamic world, ranging from West Africa to Malaysia, which over the centuries have been centres of culture and learning and of economic and commercial life, and which have contributed much to the consolidation of Islam as a faith and as a social and political institution. The articles have been taken from the second edition of the Encyclopaedia of Islam, completed in 2004, but in many cases expanded and rewritten. All have been updated to include fresh historical information, with note of contemporary social developments and population statistics. The book thus delineates the urban background of Islam has it has evolved up to the present day, highlighting the role of such great cities as Cairo, Istanbul, Baghdad and Delhi in Islamic history, and also brings them together in a rich panorama illustrating one of mankind's greatest achievements, the living organism of the city.

Book Synopsis Syrian Notebooks by : Jonathan Littell
Download or read book Syrian Notebooks written by Jonathan Littell and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A blistering firsthand account of the conflict in Homs by the internationally acclaimed author of The Kindly Ones “We fight for our religion, for our women, for our land, and lastly to save our skin. As for them, they’re only fighting to save their skin.” In 2012, Jonathan Littell traveled to the heart of the Syrian uprising, smuggled in by the Free Syrian Army to the historic city of Homs. For three weeks, he watched as neighborhoods were bombed and innocent civilians murdered. His notes on what he saw on the ground speak directly of horrors that continue today in the ongoing civil war. Amid the chaos, Littell bears witness to the lives and the hopes of freedom fighters, of families caught within the conflict, as well as of the doctors who attempt to save both innocents and combatants who come under fire. As government forces encircle the city, Littell charts the first stirrings of the fundamentalist movement that would soon hijack the revolution. Littell’s notebooks were originally the raw material for the articles he wrote upon his return for the French daily Le Monde. Published nearly immediately afterward in France, Syrian Notebooks has come to form an incomparable close-up account of a war that still grips the Middle East—a classic of war reportage.

Book Synopsis The House on Mango Street by : Sandra Cisneros
Download or read book The House on Mango Street written by Sandra Cisneros and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A coming-of-age classic about a young girl growing up in Chicago • Acclaimed by critics, beloved by readers of all ages, taught in schools and universities alike, and translated around the world—from the winner of the 2019 PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature. “Cisneros draws on her rich [Latino] heritage...and seduces with precise, spare prose, creat[ing] unforgettable characters we want to lift off the page. She is not only a gifted writer, but an absolutely essential one.” —The New York Times Book Review The House on Mango Street is one of the most cherished novels of the last fifty years. Readers from all walks of life have fallen for the voice of Esperanza Cordero, growing up in Chicago and inventing for herself who and what she will become. “In English my name means hope,” she says. “In Spanish it means too many letters. It means sadness, it means waiting." Told in a series of vignettes—sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous—Cisneros’s masterpiece is a classic story of childhood and self-discovery and one of the greatest neighborhood novels of all time. Like Sinclair Lewis’s Main Street or Toni Morrison’s Sula, it makes a world through people and their voices, and it does so in language that is poetic and direct. This gorgeous coming-of-age novel is a celebration of the power of telling one’s story and of being proud of where you're from.
