Book excerpt: HomoAmerican - The Secret Society is not merely the story of a gay man growing up in America, but a firsthand portrait of those turbulent and confusing times, observed through unfiltered eyes. Over the years and in my extensive travels, I have strived toward many means of expression and sometimes avenues of escape. I confronted the confines of society and pursued the promise and myths of liberation. As a result of my conspicuous rebellion, that of simply being myself, of not living in disguise, I began to discover another society -- a Secret Society -- of people who have grown up in this world, where lies of omission shape our destiny and keep us apart.Free of the confines of convention we wander along dangerous paths in search our own. In ordinary circles my personal life was a minefield. I have lived as an openly gay man in Iran, was witness to the lavish extravagances and social horror of apartheid South Africa, was arrested on suspicion of murder in Paris and for prostitution in New York. While my stories recount the path that brought me here, mostly they tell the story of the man that I was becoming, pieced together, bit-by-bit, out of shadows, reinvented and reborn, in silence.Still, a recurring theme plays itself out in each episode of my life; the cost of acceptance is always denial, so I am at odds with the world, or so it seems and as I grow older I realize that in ghettos and in stereotypes there is an underlying thread of a war, not with society, but with ourselves. My stories are images of different selves developing in that dangerous void and a message to all people who live in disguise and have no reflection, to people who grow up in isolation and create their lives out of their own imagination. In this Special Edition there are 36 color photo plates - each hand mounted and sewn into this black linen, gold embossed, hardcover edition with a specially designed dust jacket - a true Collectors Edition.

In New York I always feel amazed at how many parallel realities and uses of the city as an “arena” are simultaneously happening at once. The guy biking past you might be a weed messenger, the guy sitting on a bench might be an undercover cop, the dude standing right next to you on the train could be on his way to a nudist convention, and the guy at the coffee shop could be a member of a cult or secret society. No matter what their supposed purpose, there's something inherently sinister about a secret society. Though most are formed with relatively realistic political and religious goals in mind, their focus on secrecy has made them the target of countless criticisms and theories involving world domination. Of course, the reality is usually much more innocuous, but that doesn't mean that the groups haven't had an impact on world events. Many of these groups kept secrets. They had secret initiation rituals, locked doors, and strict rules against divulging what happened within the confines of the club. With this in mind, I have compiled the most famous and influential secret societies of New York into this book.

Book excerpt: This unique history of the American Civil War considers the impact of nineteenth-century American secret societies on the path to as well as the course of the war. Beginning with the European secret societies that laid the groundwork for freemasonry in the United States, Mark A. Lause analyzes how the Old World's traditions influenced various underground groups and movements in America, particularly George Lippard's Brotherhood of the Union, an American attempt to replicate the political secret societies that influenced the European Revolutions of 1848. Lause traces the Brotherhood's various manifestations, the most conspicuous being the Knights of the Golden Circle (out of which developed the Ku Klux Klan), and the Confederate secret groups through which John Wilkes Booth and others attempted to undermine the Union. This book shows how, in the years leading up to the Civil War, these clandestine organizations exacerbated existing sectional tensions in the United States and may have played a part in key events such as John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry, Lincoln's election, and the Southern secession process of 1860-1861.

Book excerpt: In 1724, Thomas Newton is cast out of his home by his aristocratic father. Desperate to make a new life for himself, he heads to London. Through a string of intimate encounters, he enters the underground world of male-male desire. Soon enough, Thomas meets Margaret Clap, who runs one of the male brothels. Without a child of her own, "Mother Clap" finds herself drawn to Thomas. She offers him a place in her house, but also a place in her heart. Thomas's homecoming is too brief. The Society for the Reformation of Manners, a group of Christian zealots, begins raiding the Molly houses. They plan to force the arrest, conviction, and execution of any man guilty of "crimes against nature." When Margaret Clap's house is raided and Margaret herself is arrested, Thomas has to make the most difficult decision of his still young life, one that could destroy everyone around him in a desperate effort to save them.

Book excerpt: To rule the world, they must first submit to Crossbones. Crossbones, the most powerful secret society in the history of Western civilization, has tapped billionaire heir Evan Clark for induction into its fold. Rumors swirl about the sexual nature of the initiation ceremony. He and his five fellow initiates soon learn that they must surrender all of themselves to the society to achieve their destinies. When hot headed intruder is punished in front of society members and initiates, Evan realizes the depravity of Crossbones and how far he must go in his quest for power. This 4500 word erotic thriller contains explicit gay sex and humiliation and is for adults only. All characters are at least 21 years of age even if not stated within the text. Excerpt: John grabbed a handful of Enzo’s coarse mane and jerked his head back. “You think your family has power,” John hissed into his ear. “You would be herding goats in Sicily like your great grandfather if it weren't for us. The Bava family runs nothing unless Crossbones allows it.” As Evan looked around the room, he knew John was right. Within the walls of Crossbones Hall, some of the most powerful families in history were represented. Many, like his, only went back to the beginning of this country, enterprising pioneers who cashed in on the American dream early, before it became a sham. Some recruits, like Shane, had no pedigree, but were chosen for their extraordinary minds. And then there were those whose forefathers had been pulling the strings of religion, politics and commerce since the dawn of European civilization. Only society elders knew for sure which candidates possessed this lineage, but everyone knew that these men were capable of doing whatever it took to preserve the secrecy and order of Crossbones. Enzo slumped on the table, a defeated look on his face. He must have realized that he had gone too far, that he must accept whatever punishment Crossbones deemed appropriate, or throw away not just his future, but his entire family's way of life. “Enzo Bava, as junior chairman of Crossbones, I sentence you to sub-initiate status. You will undergo the ritual corporal punishment and submission here before the society and current initiates, followed by a six month probationary period. After this time, you will be eligible for initiate status again. Do you accept this judgment?” “Do I have a choice?” “Of course. But I promise you, my offer is the better one.” Enzo nodded. “Alright. Let’s do this.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How our collective intelligence has helped us to evolve and prosper Humans are a puzzling species. On the one hand, we struggle to survive on our own in the wild, often failing to overcome even basic challenges, like obtaining food, building shelters, or avoiding predators. On the other hand, human groups have produced ingenious technologies, sophisticated languages, and complex institutions that have permitted us to successfully expand into a vast range of diverse environments. What has enabled us to dominate the globe, more than any other species, while remaining virtually helpless as lone individuals? This book shows that the secret of our success lies not in our innate intelligence, but in our collective brains—on the ability of human groups to socially interconnect and learn from one another over generations. Drawing insights from lost European explorers, clever chimpanzees, mobile hunter-gatherers, neuroscientific findings, ancient bones, and the human genome, Joseph Henrich demonstrates how our collective brains have propelled our species' genetic evolution and shaped our biology. Our early capacities for learning from others produced many cultural innovations, such as fire, cooking, water containers, plant knowledge, and projectile weapons, which in turn drove the expansion of our brains and altered our physiology, anatomy, and psychology in crucial ways. Later on, some collective brains generated and recombined powerful concepts, such as the lever, wheel, screw, and writing, while also creating the institutions that continue to alter our motivations and perceptions. Henrich shows how our genetics and biology are inextricably interwoven with cultural evolution, and how culture-gene interactions launched our species on an extraordinary evolutionary trajectory. Tracking clues from our ancient past to the present, The Secret of Our Success explores how the evolution of both our cultural and social natures produce a collective intelligence that explains both our species' immense success and the origins of human uniqueness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientist Charles Darwin discretely opened the possibility of a purely animalistic origin for the human species. He repeatedly insisted that the differences between humans and others were a question of degree only. Sciences were, however, taken in the opposite direction, where these differences cannot have been generated by the natural processes of biological evolution. In The Animal in the Secret World of Darwin, author Michel Bergeron discuses the effects on the sciences caused by the presence of questions on humanity only answerable with religious beliefs. His investigation suggests that significant elements of perceived humanity have remained sufficiently narrowly defined to continue to agree with religious beliefs over the entire period starting with the scientific revolution centuries ago and reaching the present. Instead, he questions, could we be the simple animal who can only live on the belief not to be a simple animal? To alleviate these biases on the sciences of life, Bergeron advocates a different synthesis between Darwinism and Lamarckism. He further asks: How can sciences pretend to a cosmology neutral in term of religious influence since all of its complex mathematical developments were made under the constraint that we can link the present directly to the Big Bang?
