Tourism product is an important component of any tourism destination, thus the book later looks into the product concept as well as the development of tourism products in Malaysia. Malaysia has many natural, cultural and man-made tourist products and attractions that can potentially pull tourists to its shore. Different perspectives and conceptual frameworks are used in looking at the homestay programme specifically in the area of product benefits, tourist experience, resident perceptions, and product quality. The elements of the programme are identified and the outcomes explored. Finally, issues surrounding the programme are discussed and recommendations on future management of the programme are offered. The book is hoped to answer enquiries about the unique homestay programme in Malaysia, if not completely, at least partially.

Book excerpt: This collection offers a sample of contemporary works on tourism and its impact on the Malaysian environment, written by academics from a variety of perspectives. Given the growing body of literature on different aspects of the industry the coverage is by no means representative, let alone exhaustive, of the current discourse. Nonetheless the nineteen chapters cover a range of interests and concerns which have emerged as a consequence of spectacular growth in tourist arrival which currently places Malaysia as one of the most popular destinations in Asia. Recent forecast indicates that the growth trends will continue for at least another decade before the country as a destination approaches maturity. This volume would be a useful reference for students, academic and other researchers who are looking for detailed information to enable them to analyse the impacts and implications of tourism development on the host society.

Book excerpt: This Handbook offers an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of core themes and concepts in community-based tourism management. Providing interdisciplinary insights from leading international scholars, this is the first book to critically examine the current status of community-based tourism. Organised into five parts, the Handbook provides cutting-edge perspectives on issues such as Indigenous communities, tourism and the environment, sustainability, and the impact of digital communities. Part 1 introduces core concepts and methodologies, and distinguishes community products from other tourism and hospitality goods. Part 2 explores communities’ attitudes towards tourism development and their engagement with and ownership of the process. It also delves into the role of community- based tourism, under the influence of governmental policies, in the economic and social development of a region. In Part 3 various management, marketing, and branding initiatives are identified as a means of expanding the tourism business. Part 4 examines the negative impacts of mass tourism and its threats to culture, tradition, identity, the built environment, and natural heritage. In the final and fifth part, future challenges and opportunities for community-based tourism initiatives are considered, and research-based sustainable solutions are proposed. Overall, the book considers engaging local populations in tourism development as a way of building stronger and more resilient communities. This Handbook fills a void in the current research and thus will appeal to scholars, students, and practitioners interested in tourism management, tourism geography, business studies, development policy and practice, regional development, conservation, and sustainability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: A, language: English, abstract: The present study tries to answer the broad question how the concept of homestay has been perceived by both tourists who visit homestay and homestay operators in Sri Lanka. The general explicit objective of this research study is to explore the homestay tourism product attributes, tourists' motivation and satisfaction and the perceptions of host communities on the homestay tourism product. Obviously the research is socio-economically and culturally situated and requires a rich narrative description which would support both qualitative and quantitative methods. The study utilized exploratory research design to examine the predicting effects of tourist's motivation and product attributes on tourists' satisfaction, the relationship between tourist's motivation and tourists' overall satisfaction and hosts' perceptions of homestay. Homestays in Sri Lanka have become increasingly popular as an accommodation option among domestic and international tourists. The client patronage to homestay is increasing drastically given the increasing tourist arrivals to the country. In addition, operators need to regard which attributes influence tourist satisfaction and their destination choice in order to formulate the strategies that attract and better satisfy customers. Although several researchers have studied the cultural and heritage tourism, they did not provide homestay issues, especially homestays in Sri Lanka.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural tourism provides opportunities for travellers to experience rural attractions and getting familiar with the culture and heritage. It is known to stimulate rural economy through job creation, farm support, nature conservation, rural supplies and services, landscape and nature conservation, rural arts and crafts, and enrichment of local heritage. The development will profit the local community through tourism products ranging from ecotourism to cultural tourism. With rich and melting pot of multicultural and biodiversity, Malaysia has great potential in rural tourism. Both Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia have the best ecotourism destinations in the region. Malaysia is blessed to have the UNESCO branded rural destinations such as Kinabalu Park, Gunung Mulu National Park and Archaeological Heritage of the Lenggong Valley. The rural tourism concept in Malaysia has been integrated with other tourism concepts such as sustainable tourism, indigenous tourism, ethnic tourism, agrotourism, ecotourism, farm tourism, cultural tourism and heritage tourism. This integrated concept has been explored in a few case studies involving archaeological, ecotourism, mangrove and highland tourism of rural destinations. These rural destinations offer great potentials in providing the ‘truly Malaysia’ experiences; however, it is yet to be fully capitalized. Managing rural tourism development is very challenging due to its limited resources and infrastructure; thus identification on how the destination is presented, managed and promoted are the major focus of this book. Therefore, these interesting case studies are hoped to enlighten the development of the selected rural tourism destinations in Malaysia.

Written in jargon-free language, this is an excellent resource for you to discover the benefits that conversational techniques can bring to your organization and its performance. Appreciative Inquiry for Change Management explains the theory and practice of AI, World Cafe, Open Space and other conversational approaches for facilitating organizational development (OD).
