Book Synopsis Albion's Seed by : David Hackett Fischer
Download or read book Albion's Seed written by David Hackett Fischer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991-03-14 with total page 981 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book is the first volume in a projected cultural history of the United States, from the earliest English settlements to our own time. It is a history of American folkways as they have changed through time, and it argues a thesis about the importance for the United States of having been British in its cultural origins. While most people in the United States today have no British ancestors, they have assimilated regional cultures which were created by British colonists, even while preserving ethnic identities at the same time. In this sense, nearly all Americans are "Albion's Seed," no matter what their ethnicity may be. The concluding section of this remarkable book explores the ways that regional cultures have continued to dominate national politics from 1789 to 1988, and still help to shape attitudes toward education, government, gender, and violence, on which differences between American regions are greater than between European nations.

Each chapter begins with a section that helps kids and teens zero in on specific problems and develop skills they can use to tune out obsessions and resist compulsions. The pages that follow show parents how to be supportive without getting in the way. The next time OCD butts in, your family will be prepared to boss back--and show an unwelcome visitor to the door. The book is laid out across six major areas of classroom management and includes the most pressing issues, problems, and concerns shared by all teachers. The underlying SCM themes of accountability, maturity, independence, personal responsibility, and intrinsic motivation are all there and weave their way throughout the entirety of the book. Together, they form a simple, unique, and sometimes contrarian approach to classroom management that anyone can do. Download or read book Deaf Gain written by H-Dirksen L. Bauman and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deaf people are usually regarded by the hearing world as having a lack, as missing a sense. Yet a definition of deaf people based on hearing loss obscures a wealth of ways in which societies have benefited from the significant contributions of deaf people. In this bold intervention into ongoing debates about disability and what it means to be human, experts from a variety of disciplines—neuroscience, linguistics, bioethics, history, cultural studies, education, public policy, art, and architecture—advance the concept of Deaf Gain and challenge assumptions about what is normal. Through their in-depth articulation of Deaf Gain, the editors and authors of this pathbreaking volume approach deafness as a distinct way of being in the world, one which opens up perceptions, perspectives, and insights that are less common to the majority of hearing persons. For example, deaf individuals tend to have unique capabilities in spatial and facial recognition, peripheral processing, and the detection of images. And users of sign language, which neuroscientists have shown to be biologically equivalent to speech, contribute toward a robust range of creative expression and understanding. By framing deafness in terms of its intellectual, creative, and cultural benefits, Deaf Gain recognizes physical and cognitive difference as a vital aspect of human diversity. Download or read book Sonichu #0 written by C. C. and published by . This book was released on 2005-03-24 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sonichu #0 is the first issue of Christian Weston Chandler's magnum opus. At this initial stage, the comic was almost entirely about Sonichu and Rosechu, although bits of Chris's life still managed to find their way in.The "hand-drawn premiere issue" is a special zero issue. In the comics industry, zero issues are used as either a sales-enhancing gimmick (Image Comics is a notable user of this) or a special preview of work that will not truly begin until issue #1. Given that it previews nothing, which one Chris was going for is probably the former, though given that it's not legally able to be sold, it fails even that. The comic consists of Sonichu's first three adventures. In "Sonichu's Origin", the core cast of the series is introduced as Sonichu and Rosechu are created. Then, in "Genesis of the Lovehogs", the two protagonists meet and immediately fall in love. Finally, in "Sonichu vs. Naitsirhc", our yellow hero does battle with his first real villain, who but foreshadows the challenges awaiting the hedgehogs in the following issue. Bonus material in Sonichu #0 includes various advertisements for imaginary Sonichu products, "classic" Sonichu comic strips drawn outside of the narrative of the main comic book, and the first "Sub-Episode".

In 1763, Russian empress Catherine II invited Europeans to immigrate. Colonists became Russian citizens, yet kept their language and culture, founding 104 Volga River communities. By 1871, facing poor economic conditions and an army draft, 100,000 Volga Germans poured into the New World, eventually spreading throughout the Pacific Northwest and influencing agriculture, religion, politics, and social development in their new homeland. First published as "The Volga Germans" in 1985, this revised and expanded edition offers a new introduction and collection of folk stories illustrated by Jim Gerlitz.
Book Synopsis Our Children's Future by : Colin Ward
Download or read book Our Children's Future written by Colin Ward and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Our Children's Future: Does Public service Media Matter" is a report published by UK advocacy body, the Children's Media Foundation. It takes the form of a multi-authored discussion on various aspects of public service media and its relationship to young people in Britain in 2021 and looks forward to consider the years ahead. The report was commissioned in the context of reviews of public service media by the regulator Ofcom, and Parliamentary Select Committees, and government interest in various aspects of the public service media landscape - including: the future ownership of Channel 4; the future of the pilot Young Audiences Content Fund which supported commercial public service broadcasters by enhancing the budgets available for commissioning, and the future of The BBC and the television licence fee. The Report's focus on young people is especially relevant because any discussion of the future prospects for public service content is significantly impacted by the flight of young audiences to on-demand services - either the huge international streaming services such as Netflix or Disney+, or online social media platforms such as YouTube or Tik Tok. Authors of chapters for this Report analyse how the young audiences reached this new relationship with content and how that affects the future of conventional broadcasting and the regulatory status quo. They also consider innovative ways in which "new futures" for public service content funding, delivery and commissioning could play out. The report is an invaluable contribution to the discussion of the future of this vital part of the UK's media landscape, and its special reference to the children's and youth audience are unique in the current exploration of the debate.
