Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sets out a series of problems to demonstrate to newcomers to Lie theory how notions of positivity in it occur in quite diverse settings, vary widely both in nature and application, and are approached from quite divergent mathematical viewpoints. Each of the 15 chapters (one in French) addresses a specific problem or a circle of problems at a level apprehendable by a graduate student with a sound knowledge of basic Lie theory. The emphasis is on smaller problems that might serve as guidelines to the main problems. Among the topics are exponential functions, invariant cones in real representations, total positivity, discrete series and analyticity, harmonic analysis on causal symmetric spaces, and linear algebraic monoids. A web site has been established to disseminate solutions to any of the problems. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: This book collects a series of important works on noncommutative harmonic analysis on homogeneous spaces and related topics. All the authors participated in the 6th Tunisian-Japanese conference "Geometric and Harmonic Analysis on homogeneous spaces and Applications" held at Djerba Island in Tunisia during the period of December 16-19, 2019. The aim of this conference and the five preceding Tunisian-Japanese meetings was to keep up with the active development of representation theory interrelated with various other mathematical fields, such as number theory, algebraic geometry, differential geometry, operator algebra, partial differential equations, and mathematical physics. The present volume is dedicated to the memory of Takaaki Nomura, who organized the series of Tunisian-Japanese conferences with great effort and enthusiasm. The book is a valuable resource for researchers and students working in various areas of analysis, geometry, and algebra in connection with representation theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first and only reference to provide a comprehensive treatment of the Lie theory of subsemigroups of Lie groups. The book is uniquely accessible and requires little specialized knowledge. It includes information on the infinitesimal theory of Lie subsemigroups, and a characterization of those cones in a Lie algebra which are invariant under the action of the group of inner automporphisms. It provides full treatment of the local Lie theory for semigroups, and finally, gives the reader a useful account of the global theory for the existence of subsemigroups with a given set of infinitesimal generators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subsemigroups of finite-dimensional Lie groups that are generated by one-parameter semigroups are the subject of this book. It covers basic Lie theory for such semigroups and some closely related topics. These include ordered homogeneous manifolds, where the order is defined by a field of cones, invariant cones in Lie algebras and associated Ol'shanskii semigroups. Applications to representation theory, symplectic geometry and Hardy spaces are also given. The book is written as an efficient guide for those interested in subsemigroups of Lie groups and their applications in various fields of mathematics (see the User's guide at the end of the Introduction). Since it is essentially self-contained and leads directly to the core of the theory, the first part of the book can also serve as an introduction to the subject. The reader is merely expected to be familiar with the basic theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras.

Book excerpt: Infinite dimensional holomorphy is the study of holomorphic or analytic func tions over complex topological vector spaces. The terms in this description are easily stated and explained and allow the subject to project itself ini tially, and innocently, as a compact theory with well defined boundaries. However, a comprehensive study would include delving into, and interacting with, not only the obvious topics of topology, several complex variables theory and functional analysis but also, differential geometry, Jordan algebras, Lie groups, operator theory, logic, differential equations and fixed point theory. This diversity leads to a dynamic synthesis of ideas and to an appreciation of a remarkable feature of mathematics - its unity. Unity requires synthesis while synthesis leads to unity. It is necessary to stand back every so often, to take an overall look at one's subject and ask "How has it developed over the last ten, twenty, fifty years? Where is it going? What am I doing?" I was asking these questions during the spring of 1993 as I prepared a short course to be given at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro during the following July. The abundance of suit able material made the selection of topics difficult. For some time I hesitated between two very different aspects of infinite dimensional holomorphy, the geometric-algebraic theory associated with bounded symmetric domains and Jordan triple systems and the topological theory which forms the subject of the present book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions to Analysis: A Collection of Papers Dedicated to Lipman Bers is a compendium of papers provided by Bers, friends, students, colleagues, and professors. These papers deal with Teichmuller spaces, Kleinian groups, theta functions, algebraic geometry. Other papers discuss quasiconformal mappings, function theory, differential equations, and differential topology. One paper discusses the results of the rigidity theorem of Mostow and its generalization by Marden in relation to geometric properties of Kleinian groups of the first kind. These results, obtained by planar methods, are presented in terms of the hyperbolic 3-space language, which is a natural pedestal in approaching the action of the Kleinian groups. Another paper reviews Riemann's vanishing theorem which solves the Jacobi inversion problem, by relating the vanishing properties of the theta function (particularly at half periods) to properties of certain linear series on the Riemann surface. One paper examines the problem of obtaining relations among the periods of the differentials of first kind on a compact Riemann surface. An application of a computer program involves supersonic transport. The program is based on the hodograph transformation and a method of complex characteristics to calculate profiles that are shock-less at a specified angle of attack, or at a specified subsonic free-stream Mach number. The collection can prove useful for engineers, statisticians, students, and professors in advance mathematics or courses related to aeronautics.
