Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Governor" is John Inglis, a keen Clyde-based yachtsman, and is a humorous reference to his lack of authority on a boat. He relates the delights of sailing for pleasure around the Inner Hebrides of Scotland between the Clyde and Skye, on the West Coast. Based on four short cruises he made in the Scottish summers from 1873-1876, sailing in a bigger boat each year. Told with humour, the work describes the life and times, the beauty of the environment and the challenging waters of the West Coast in the days before diesel engines and marinas.

Book excerpt: Author Chan Mei Yuet's life began in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, but when her parents separate, Yuet and her mother return to the little town of Muar. Due to the increasing pressure of a new, unhealthy baby and the shame of giving birth out of wedlock, Yuet is sent to live with her grandmother. In an attempt to escape the pain of being unloved and unwanted by her family, Yuet begins traveling throughout Europe. Yuet's life improves significantly when she meets a young French man named Jean-Pierre. Despite their communication problems and cultural differences, their relationship blossoms. The couple is soon talking marriage and sharing a flat in Cagnes-Sur-Mer. The turmoil in Yuet's life is compounded further by her future in-laws' constant and malicious intrusions and the insistence that she abort her baby or face deportation. However, the birth of Christel begins to fill the empty void created by Yuet's dreadful childhood and current circumstances and allows the wounds of her adolescence to begin healing. She now has a new focus in life: the joy of motherhood. Sweet Innocence chronicles the life of globe-trotting author Chan Mei Yuet, who shares her emotional story--from a life filled with bitterness to one filled with joy.

Download or read book A Happy Holiday written by Cecilia Morgan and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2008-06-28 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most revealing things about national character is the way that citizens react to and report on their travels abroad. Oftentimes a tourist's experience with a foreign place says as much about their country of origin as it does about their destination. A Happy Holiday examines the travels of English-speaking Canadian men and women to Britain and Europe during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It describes the experiences of tourists, detailing where they went and their reactions to tourist sites, and draws attention to the centrality of culture and the sensory dimensions of overseas tourism. Among the specific topics explored are travellers' class relationships with people in the tourism industry, impressions of historic landscapes in Britain and Europe, descriptions of imperial spectacles and cultural sights, the use of public spaces, and encounters with fellow tourists and how such encounters either solidified or unsettled national subjectivities. Cecilia Morgan draws our attention to the important ambiguities between empire and nation, and how this relationship was dealt with by tourists in foreign lands. Based on personal letters, diaries, newspapers, and periodicals from across Canada, A Happy Holiday argues that overseas tourism offered people the chance to explore questions of identity during this period, a time in which issues such as gender, nation, and empire were the subject of much public debate and discussion.
