Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many political regimes today draw such legitimacy as they have from a revolution: the destruction of an existing political elite and its replacement by a different group or groups drawn from inside the same society. A large part of the ideological dispute in world politics has come in consequence to turn on an interpretation of the character of revolutions as political and social events. It is extremely difficult to separate ideological assessments of the desirability or otherwise of what has occured in revolutions from causal explanations of why these revolutions occurred, and both major traditions in the analysis of revolutionary phenomena have been damaged by their failure to distinguish clearly between explanation and assessment. In examining eight major revolutions of the twentieth century, John Dunn helps readers to remedy this state of affairs by thinking for themselves.

Book Synopsis Number One Realist by : Nathaniel L. Moir
Download or read book Number One Realist written by Nathaniel L. Moir and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a 1965 letter to Newsweek, French writer and academic Bernard Fall (1926-67) staked a claim as the 'Number One Realist' on the Vietnam War. This is the first book to study the thought of this overlooked figure, one of the most important experts on counterinsurgency warfare in Indochina. Nathaniel L. Moir's intellectual history analyses Fall's formative experiences: his service in the French underground and army during the Second World War; his father's execution by the Germans and his mother's murder in Auschwitz; and his work as a research analyst at the Nuremberg Trials. Moir demonstrates how these critical events shaped Fall's trenchant analysis of Viet Minh-led revolutionary warfare during the French-Indochina War and the early Vietnam War. In the years before conventional American intervention in 1965, Fall argued that--far more than anything in the United States' military arsenal--resolving conflict in Vietnam would require political strength, willpower, integrity and skill. Number One Realist illuminates Fall's study of political reconciliation in Indochina, while showing how his profound, humanitarian critique of war continues to echo in the endless conflicts of the present. It will challenge and change the way we think about the Vietnam War.

Book excerpt: Frances FitzGerald's landmark history of Vietnam and the Vietnam War, "a compassionate and penetrating account of the collision of two societies that remain untranslatable to one another." (New York Times Book Review) This magisterial work, based on Frances FitzGerald's many years of research and travels, takes us inside the history of Vietnam -- the traditional, ancestor-worshiping villages, the conflicts between Communists and anti-Communists, Catholics and Buddhists, generals and monks, the disruption created by French colonialism, and America's ill-fated intervention -- and reveals the country as seen through Vietnamese eyes. Originally published in 1972, Fire in the Lake was the first history of Vietnam written by an American and won the Pulitzer Prize, the Bancroft Prize, and the National Book Award. With a clarity and insight unrivaled by any author before it or since, Frances FitzGerald illustrates how America utterly and tragically misinterpreted the realities of Vietnam.

Book excerpt: "In this portrait not only of the man but of his people and of the cause to which he dedicated his entire life, Reinhold Neumann-Hoditz traces Ho Chi Minh's career from his birth in 1990 to his death in 1969. Special attention is given to his early political training in Paris, his role with guerrilla insurgents in the Montagnard countryside, his visits to China and Russia, and events which led to the decisive battle of Dienbienphu in 1954 and the revolt of the peasants two years later. The autobiographer has drawn extensively on North Vietnamese sources and Ho Chi Minh's own works to present a detailed picture of the intriguing figure who was known as Nguyen Tat Than, Nguyen Ai Quoc, and "Uncle Ho." A wide variety of photographs richly chronicles the leading personality in a drama that has its roots in the nineteenth century and continues to this day"--
