Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian Harm Reduction Network is such a technical resource network. Supported by UNAIDS and other agencies, it has become an important mechanism for promoting pragmatic approaches to the prevention of drug use and HIV/AIDS in Asia. The purpose of this case study is to examine those factors that made it necessary to establish this network - and why a network, not a traditional non-governmental organization, was necessary. The study provides information on how the network was conceptualized and on its major activities during its first four years of operation. An assessment of the impact of it.
Book Synopsis The Global HIV Epidemics Among People Who Inject Drugs by : Arin Dutta
Download or read book The Global HIV Epidemics Among People Who Inject Drugs written by Arin Dutta and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication addresses research questions related to an increase in the levels of access and utilization for four key interventions that have the potential to significantly reduce HIV infections among People Who Inject Drugs (PWID) and their sexual and injecting partners, and hence morbidity and mortality in low and middle-income countries (LMIC). These interventions are drawn from nine consensus interventions that comprise a 'comprehensive package' for PWID. The four interventions are: Needle and Syringe Programs (NSP), Medically Assisted Therapy (MAT), HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT), and Antiretroviral Therapy (ART). The book summarizes the results from several recent reviews of studies related to the effectiveness of the four key interventions in reducing risky behaviors in the context of transmitting or acquiring HIV infection. Overall, the four key interventions have strong effects on the risk of HIV infection among PWID via different pathways, and this determination is included in the documents proposing the comprehensive package of interventions. In order to attain the greatest effect from these interventions, structural issues must be addressed, especially the removal of punitive policies targeting PWID in many countries. The scientific evidence presented here, the public health rationale, and the human rights imperatives are all in accord: we can and must do better for PWID. The available tools are evidence-based, right affirming, and cost effective. What are required now are political will and a global consensus that this critical component of global HIV can no longer be ignored and under-resourced.

International Harm Reduction Development Program and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In China and Malaysia, Eastern Europe and Russia, Central Asia, and parts of Latin America, the majority of HIV infections are due to injecting drug use. Yet injection drug users and other people who use drugs often have little to no access to the HIV treatment available in these regions. In a time when universal access to HIV treatment is a shared goal, and when growing numbers of studies indicate that people who use drugs are capable of adhering to antiretroviral therapy (ARV), why is there such inequitable access to treatment? Is it because of discrimination, lack of political attention, and community organizations not being heard? Or is it also because treatment professionals are overwhelmed by the demands already placed on them, and tend to see people who use drugs as difficult, "hopeless" patients who cause trouble and take more time? Delivering HIV Care and Treatment for People Who Use Drugs: Lessons from Research and Practice seeks to address these questions by presenting information on caring for drug users with HIV, and those with HIV and other infections. Chapters that are scientific in nature are accompanied by analyses and case studies highlighting the politics and policies influencing the provision of HIV treatment to drug users.

Book Synopsis HIV Prevention Among Injection Drug Users by : Richard Needle
Download or read book HIV Prevention Among Injection Drug Users written by Richard Needle and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report offers recommendations on one aspect of the HIV pandemic that provides an opportunity for major gains in global HIV prevention: injecting drug use. In some regions of the world--Eastern Europe and Central Asia, for example, the ratio of new HIV infections among injecting drug users (IDUs) to those gaining access to ART exceeds the global five-to-two average. At the same time, there is overwhelming evidence that needle and syringe programs and medication-assisted drug treatment (MAT, that is, treatment of substance use disorders with either methadone or buprenorphine) are highly effective in preventing the spread of HIV among IDUs; yet these interventions continue to receive little attention and few resources, and they remain unavailable to the vast majority of people who inject drugs.

This book was released on 2019-06-16 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opioid crisis in the United States has come about because of excessive use of these drugs for both legal and illicit purposes and unprecedented levels of consequent opioid use disorder (OUD). More than 2 million people in the United States are estimated to have OUD, which is caused by prolonged use of prescription opioids, heroin, or other illicit opioids. OUD is a life-threatening condition associated with a 20-fold greater risk of early death due to overdose, infectious diseases, trauma, and suicide. Mortality related to OUD continues to escalate as this public health crisis gathers momentum across the country, with opioid overdoses killing more than 47,000 people in 2017 in the United States. Efforts to date have made no real headway in stemming this crisis, in large part because tools that already existâ€"like evidence-based medicationsâ€"are not being deployed to maximum impact. To support the dissemination of accurate patient-focused information about treatments for addiction, and to help provide scientific solutions to the current opioid crisis, this report studies the evidence base on medication assisted treatment (MAT) for OUD. It examines available evidence on the range of parameters and circumstances in which MAT can be effectively delivered and identifies additional research needed.
