Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Whitley County, Indiana All life and achievement is evolution; present wisdom comes from past experience, and present commercial prosperity has come only from past exertion and suffering. The deeds and motives of the men that have gone before have been instrumental in shaping the destinies of later communities and states. The development of a new country was at once a task and a privilege. It required great courage, sacrifice and privation. Compare the present conditions of the residents of Whitley county, Indiana, with what they were one hundred years ago. From a trackless wilderness it has come to be a center of prosperity and civiliza tion, with millions of wealth, with systems of intersecting railways, grand educa tional institutions, marvelous industries and immense agricultural productions. Can any thinking person be insensible to the fascination of the study which dis closes the incentives. Hopes' aspirations and efforts of the early pioneers who so strongly laid the foundation upon which has been reared the magnificent prosperity of later days. To perpetuate the story of these people, and to trace and record the social, political and industrial progress of the community from_its first inception, is the function of the local historian. A sincere purpose to preserve facts and per: sonal memoirs that are deserving of preservation. And which unite the present to the past. Is the motive for the present publication. The work has been in the hands of a corps of able writers. Who have. After much patient study and research. Pro? Duced here the most complete history of vvh-itley county, Indiana. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Counties of Whitley and Noble, Indiana: Historical and Biographical This volume goes forth to our patrons the result of months of arduous, unremitting and conscientious labor. None so well know as those who have been associated with us the almost insurmountable difficulties to be met with in the preparation of a work of this character. Since the inauguration of the enterprise, nearly one year ago, a large force has been employed - both local and other - in gathering material. During this time, upward of three thousand persons have been called upon in the two counties, to contribute from their recollections, carefully preserved letters, scraps of manuscript, printed fragments, memoranda, etc. Public records and semi-official documents have been searched, the newspaper files of the counties have been overhauled, and former citizens, now living out of the counties, have been corresponded with, all for the purpose of making the record as complete as could be, and for the verification of the information by a conference with many. In gathering from these numerous sources, both for the historical and biographical departments, the conflicting statements, the discrepancies and the fallible and incomplete nature of public documents were almost appalling to our historians and biog raphers, who were expected to weave therefrom with any degree of accuracy, in panoramic review, a record of events. Members of the same families disagree as to the spelling of the family name, contradict each other's statements as to dates of births, of settlement in the county, nativity and other matters of fact. In this entangled condition, we have given preference to the preponderance of authority, and while we acknowledge the existence of errors and our inability to furnish a perfect history, we claim to have come up to the standard of our promises, and given as complete and accurate a work as the nature of the sur roundings would permit. Whatever may be the verdict of those who do not and will not comprehend the difficulties to be met with, we feel assured that all just and thoughtful people will appreciate our efforts, and recognize the impor tance of the undertaking and the great public benefit that has been accomplished in preserving the valuable historical matter of the county and biographies of many of its citizens, that perhaps would otherwise have passed into oblivion. To those who have given us their support and encouragement, and they are many, we acknowledge our gratitude, and can assure them that as years go by the book will grow in value as a repository not only of pleasing reading matter, but of treasured information of the past, and become a monument more eu during than marble. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Evansville and Vanderburgh County, Indiana This history is a recital of prominent local events of our people from the earliest clay to the present. Their habits and customs and growth will be told in the simple, plain manner of those pioneers. I had almost said in the open, frank style of that heroic age - when bravery was exercised and deeds of valor performed, when the protection of life and the guarding of property were the incentives to action, when the home and the family were jealously watched against the wiles of the skulking Indians, when the vain ambitions of conventional society of this swift day were entirely wanting. In those days, let us not forget, a man's word of honor was his bond, as inviolable as his sacred rights, and his simple "yes" or "no" were never repudiated nor impeached by himself, nor discredited by neighbors. They were given without qualification or reservation and accepted in the spirit and force that the conventionalisms or customs of that day attached to them. Sham and pretension were no parts of the Hoosier pioneer's nature, nor would he suffer anything to smirch his good name or compromise his family honor. He scrupulously separated bis politics and his religion, and personal differences were sometimes settled at the rifle's muzzle. Instances are not wanting where the bravado and the thief have been summarily dealt with. The code of honor among those primitive people was of such a high standard and inflexibility that a villian and a sncak could not adapt themselves to it, and therefore they found more congenial quarters elsewhere, as a rule. Dishonor and bad faith in anyone were never forgiven, and a promise was held sacred. Their high standard of equity and probity developed a race of honorable men and women, and their application of strict morals to daily life restrained the evilly inclined and gave them honest public officials and professional men of superior character and sterling qualities. Reputation was not then a mere bond of dollars and cents, as it is m our rushing, forgetting, exciting, nerve-exhausting, peace-destroying day. This brief portraiture of the majestic character of those early heroes may convey a glimpse at the threshold of those of whom we write. No labors are required at our bands, we are delighted to say, to frame defenses or invent apologies for these friends and neighbors, who are set down in this volume with loving care and jealous love. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard History of Adams and Wells Counties, Vol. 2: An Authentic Narrative of the Past, With an Extended Survey of Modern Developments in the Progress of Town and Country Prof. Philemon A. Allen, superintendent of the public schools of Bluffton, Indiana, has been associated with educational work in the Hoosier State during much of his active career. For twelve years, however, he was interested in journalism and during that time was editor of the Bluffton Banner. Holding advanced ideas concerning education and methods of teaching, during the ten years of his incumbency as superintendent of the Bluffton schools, he has introduced many methods that are proving of the most practical value in making the school what it ever should be - a preparation for the responsible duties which devolve upon every individual after reaching maturity. His course has received the hearty approval of the most progressive citizens of Bluffton and he has procured the co-operation of his teachers to such an extent that the result is one of great benefit to the pupils enrolled. A native of Whitley County, Indiana, Philemon A. Allen was born Janaury 29, 1853, and he is a son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Force) Allen, both natives of Akron, Ohio, where they were reared, educated and married. Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Allen came to Indiana in 1843 and located in Whitley County, then all woods, and there operated a saw mill with marked success for a number of years. There were nine children born to them, three of whom died in infancy and three of whom are living, in 1917. William and Wesley Allen, two of their sons, were both Union soldiers in the Civil war. The Allens were devout members of the Methodist Episcopal Church and they were influential citizens in their own community. Born and reared on a farm, Professor Allen attended the neighboring district school during the winter months and in the summer time ably assisted his father and brothers in the work and management of the old homestead. So diligent had he been in procuring an education that at the age of seventeen years he began to teach school himself. In 1873 he entered the National Normal School, at Lebanon, Ohio, and after several years' attendance in that institution he taught school for two years in Mason County, Illinois. During the year of 1875 he was a student in Fort Wayne College, where he subsequently became an instructor in the normal department, holding that position for two years. In 1877 he was elected superintendent of the Ossian schools and he served in that capacity with the utmost efficiency for a period of four years, during which time he raised the standard of and graded the schools. In 1881, in order to make himself more efficient as an educator, he travelled extensively in Europe and while there made a thorough study of the school systems of the various countries he visited. Immediately after his return home he was elected superintendent of the Bluffton schools, holding that position for ten years. One of the first things he did on assuming office was to organize a high school, the first class of which graduated in June, 1883.
