Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Town of Greenock In presenting this first "History of the Town of Greenock" to the notice of the public, the Author is perfectly aware that many motives may be assigned for so doing. But what led to this attempt, was the fact that many places, less entitled to notice than this flourishing sea-port town, had their rise and progress set before the public, while here we were comparatively unknown. Whether this brief sketch will find its way to any thing like a favourable reception from the public, remains to be seen; and the Author is perfectly aware that there are many individual's in the community more qualified to do justice to the task than he who has drawn up its pages. But what is "writ is writ." To those gentlemen who favoured him with communications to the queries sent abroad, it is but too little to return his most sincere thanks. To William Macfie, Esq., of Langhouse; as also to John Speirs, Esq., M. D.; James Leitch, Esq.; John Mennons, Esq.; Robert Carswell, Esq.; Mr. William Heron, and Mr. Colin Buchanan; it is but justice to state, that their information on various subjects was of the greatest use, and consequently made available in this compilation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greenock and Its Early Social Environment Two hundred years ago, when the eighteenth century commenced to run its course, the city and hamlets on the banks of the Clyde began to feel the throbbings of a new life. The devastating wars of centuria had passed away, the distractions of the Covenanting times had been quelled, and by the Union with England, in 1707, the re strictive fetters, which had hitherto strangled our commerce, were broken asunder, thereby Opening up a large and lucrative trade at it home and abroad. If we could, in imagina tion, place ourselves on board one of the small vessels which then traded or fished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greenock Church: St. Andrews, New Brunswick From 1821 to 1906 With the passing away of that generation of good old people who lived in St. Andrews, and were actively identified with the affairs of the town during the early part of the nineteenth century, much very important and valuable information connected with the settlement and development of that quaint old town has been lost, and a history replete with events of the utmost importance has been obliterated forever. The unwritten history of Saint Andrews that was told, in broken paragraphic form, by the generations now long since passed away, would have made a very large, interesting and valuable volume, and because of the failure to properly chronicle some of what were really the most important events in connection with our local history, by those personally conversant therewith, the same can now only be told with the usual uncertainty of tradition. That fact obtains in a very marked degree in connection with the affairs of the Presbyterian Church in St. Andrews prior to the year 1825. In that year, on the 17th of April, what appears to be the first record connected with Greenock Presbyterian Church was made; but all the struggles and trials through which the Church passed before that date, and which would, of necessity, form a very interesting chapter in the history of the congregation, is known to the present generation only by tradition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of the Parish and the Ayrshire Legatees In the course of some remarks upon Sir Walter Scott and his copiousness as a writer, John Galt in his Autobiography makes the not very profound remark that 'unless we keep the quality of excellence constantly in view, we shall fall into a sad error by forming our estimates of authors on the quantity of their productions.' It is impossible but that Galt, as he penned these words in his declining years, should have looked back on his own remarkable literary industry and wondered how far the abundance of his own writings would affect the judgment of posterity upon his place in literature. For there can be no doubt that Galt's fluency in writing, and the apparent ease with which he could produce any kind of book to order, have had much to do with the neglect that has fallen upon him in later days. He had written poetry, voyages and travels, biographies, and treatises on commercial subjects, besides editing and compiling, before ever he discovered the vein in him that was really worth working. John Galt was born in 1779 at Irvine in Ayrshire, the son of a sea-captain. He became in due course a clerk in the custom-house at Greenock, but his heart was already given to literary pursuits, and he early began writing verse and the regulation tragedy.
