This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Town of Canton The committee found that Mr. Huntoon had left untouched the history of the town during the War of the Rebellion, so far as such history relates to the service of its soldiers in the field and its citizens at home; and it was at first their inten tion to have this omission supplied, so far as might be, by some other hand. But it was found that in order to carry out this plan it would be necessary to omit from the book other matter properly belonging to it, which the committee believed they could not with propriety do' and so they re luctantly abandoned the plan of adding a war chapter to the work, hoping that at some time the services of Canton's citizens and soldiers in the great conflict may be recorded in enduring form. Book Synopsis Indian Placenames in America by : Sandy Nestor
Download or read book Indian Placenames in America written by Sandy Nestor and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Indians have lost much of their land over the years, but their legacy is evident in the many places around the United States that have Indian names. Countless placenames have, however, been corrupted over time, and numerous placenames have similar spellings but different meanings. This reference work is a reprint in one combined volume of the two-volume set published by McFarland in 2003 and 2005. Volume One covers the name origins and histories of cities, towns and villages in the United States that have Indian names. It is arranged alphabetically by state, then alphabetically by city, town or village name. Additional data include population figures and county names. Probable Indian placenames with no certain origin also receive entries, and as much history as possible is provided about those locations. Volume Two covers more than 1400 rivers, lakes, mountains and other natural features in the United States with Indian names. It is arranged by state, and then alphabetically by natural feature. Counties are provided for most entries, with multiple counties listed for some entries where appropriate. In addition to name origins and meanings, geophysical data such as the heights of mountains and lengths of waterways are indicated.
Book Synopsis Tribe, Race, History by : Daniel R. Mandell
Download or read book Tribe, Race, History written by Daniel R. Mandell and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2011-01-31 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This award–winning study examines American Indian communities in Southern New England between the Revolution and Reconstruction. From 1780–1880, Native Americans lived in the socioeconomic margins. They moved between semiautonomous communities and towns and intermarried extensively with blacks and whites. Drawing from a wealth of primary documentation, Daniel R. Mandell centers his study on ethnic boundaries, particularly how those boundaries were constructed, perceived, and crossed. Mandell analyzes connections and distinctions between Indians and their non-Indian neighbors with regard to labor, landholding, government, and religion; examines how emerging romantic depictions of Indians (living and dead) helped shape a unique New England identity; and looks closely at the causes and results of tribal termination in the region after the Civil War. Shedding new light on regional developments in class, race, and culture, this groundbreaking study is the first to consider all Native Americans throughout southern New England. Winner, 2008 Lawrence W. Levine Award, Organization of American Historians
