Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Town of Canton The committee found that Mr. Huntoon had left untouched the history of the town during the War of the Rebellion, so far as such history relates to the service of its soldiers in the field and its citizens at home; and it was at first their inten tion to have this omission supplied, so far as might be, by some other hand. But it was found that in order to carry out this plan it would be necessary to omit from the book other matter properly belonging to it, which the committee believed they could not with propriety do' and so they re luctantly abandoned the plan of adding a war chapter to the work, hoping that at some time the services of Canton's citizens and soldiers in the great conflict may be recorded in enduring form. Download or read book Canton written by Marc Kantrowitz and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The town of Canton is a celebration of New England history, from its early days when Paul Revere opened the nation's first copper rolling mill in 1801 to its beautiful nineteenth-century architecture and its economic growth through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Here, in over 200 rare and striking photographs, the story of Canton unfolds, full of rich tradition and Yankee pride. Canton's reputation as the center of the nation's copper industry helped the town contribute to the young country's history. The first copper plates for the hull of the USS Constitution came from Canton, as did the copper work for the nation's first steam-powered warship. Many of the brass cannons used during the Civil War were also made in this Massachusetts town. Canton will immerse the reader in days gone by, taking a nostalgic look at a time thought by many to be the best. Images of schools, churches, families, police, and firefighters compose a picture of another era, where one can see Canton at work, play, and war.

Download or read book CANTON written by Michael Beadle and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2013-08-19 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated along the Pigeon River Valley near the Great Smoky Mountains, Canton offers a fascinating history rooted in hard work and community pride. The construction of roads, bridges, and railroad lines by the late 1800s resulted in a growing population and turned the sleepy hamlet known as Ford of Pigeon into the bustling town of Canton. Spruce and chestnut forests in the region lured Ohio industrialist Peter G. Thomson to build the Champion Fibre Company in the center of town. Today, it is known as Evergreen Packaging, and the town continues to celebrate its workforce with one of the longest-running Labor Day festivals in the nation. Canton showcases the rich industrial history of this North Carolina mountain town, while also highlighting contributions from schools, churches, community leaders, local businesses, and sports teams.
Book Synopsis Canton Township by : Gerald C. Van Dusen
Download or read book Canton Township written by Gerald C. Van Dusen and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canton Township, which took its name from the city in China to distinguish itself from other early American communities, has a rich agricultural heritage, evident in its onetime moniker "Corn Capital of Michigan." The pioneers who traveled to Canton in the first half of the 19th century were a hearty breed of farmers and settlers who cleared land, built roads, and forged a life for their families in the wilderness of the Northwest Territories. No single town center emerged, but two villages--Sheldon Corners and Cherry Hill--sprang up to provide centers of community activity in their churches, post offices, and general stores. Eventually the appearance of the automobile and the expressway dramatically altered the landscape of Canton Township, leading to the commercial development and housing boom of today.
