Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1904 edition. Excerpt: ... INTRODUCTION. It is well known that for twenty years I have resisted urgent appeals of surviving comrades to write a history of the First Alabama Regiment. Even now I yield my consent to undertake this sketch only after fully realizing that unless I write it, the regiment will be left without any record, and that it will be better for the regiment to have a poorly written record than none whatever. I am fully aware of my incompetence to do the subject justice; and the insistence of Col. I. G. W. Steedman, the distinguished commander of the regiment during the war, and of Thomas M. Owen, the able and active Director of the Department of Archives and History, are to a large degree responsible for the final appearance of the work. The following personal allusions are necessary in order to gratify the natural desire of readers to know the opportunities I have had by experience and observation for ascertaining the facts and incidents here recorded. I was an original member of the "Perote Guards," organized at Perote, Bullock (then Pike) county, in 1859, and composed mostly of students of the Perote Institute and of young business men of the town; left Perote with the company Feb. 12, 1861, and the next day was mustered into the service of Alabama at Girard by a Captain Thom; was organized with the company into the First Regiment Alabama Volunteers at Barrancas, Fla., about a month later, which regiment, by consent of men and officers, was transferred to the Confederate service about April 1, 1861; remained with the regiment until its surrender with the Army of Tennessee, April 27, 1865, at Greensboro, N. C.; participated in every battle and campaign of the regiment except the march from Lovejoy Station, Ga., to Tuscumbia, Ala., in the fall of...

This book provides a comprehensive historical narrative chronicling the life and times of 1,550 men from five Alabama counties - Tuscaloosa, Pickens, Fayette, Greene and Perry - who fought with the 41st Alabama Regiment during the Civil War. Exceptionally well documented, over 450 never before published letters and scores of official documents provide graphic insights about the lives and times of Alabama citizen soldiers, their families and communities. The 41st engaged in over 40 combat situations, fighting with the Army of Tennessee in Georgia, Tennessee and Mississippi, and eventually serving in the trenches in Petersburg alongside Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Of interest to Civil War researchers and genealogists, the service record of every soldier known to have served with the 41st is contained in the book.

Book excerpt: From inception to the final roll call, this regimental history traces the 11th Regiment of Alabama Volunteers from its 1861 creation to the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. The work follows the 11th Alabama through various battles including Manassas, Fredericksburg, Salem Church and Gettysburg. Drawing on personal correspondence such as letters and diaries, it presents the soldiers as individuals and contributes to the dialogue on why the typical Southern soldier fought in the war. The geographical movement of the regiment throughout the war, its key leaders and the organization of its companies are also discussed in detail. There are 81 period photographs that add to the story of this remarkable unit.

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 16 May 1862, 904 soldiers formed ranks for the first time and unfurled the virgin colors of the 42nd Alabama Infantry Regiment. These 904 soldiers were a mixture of veterans, volunteers, conscripts, and substitutes. The regiment participated in nine western theater battles and their associated campaigns. These campaigns included Corinth, Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, Atlanta, and Bentonville. Not one battle was a victory but the heat of battle forged a band of brothers tempered with time. The regiment cased its colors for the last time on 9 April 1865 in a desolate North Carolina field; only ninety-eight soldiers remained at the end of this bloody national struggle. This thesis will identify the timeless factors of cohesion within the 42nd Alabama. This thesis will further determine the most prominent of these factors, specifically within the remaining ninety eight soldiers. Finally, this thesis will explore the value of cohesion to the current military force. This thesis incorporated sources from the The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, Confederate Veteran, The Southern Historical Papers, personal diaries and letters, census records, compiled service records, sources from the Alabama State Archives and the National Park Service. After the examination of numerous factors, to include discipline, leadership, and morale, the common factor that held the core members of the unit together until the end was the “original volunteer” soldiers of 1861. These soldiers formed the cohesive bond of the unit by instilling a common conviction and devotion to duty within the 42nd Alabama. The final analysis reinforces the value of the volunteer soldier and the worth of an “all-volunteer” force.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st Alabama Volunteers CSA was created in October 1861 and remained in the vicinity of Mobile, Alabama, for most of the war. It was staffed primarily by local Mobile area men supplemented with some additional men from South Alabama counties. The 21st Regiment included existing companies such as the French Guards, the Spanish Guards, the British Guards and the Mobile Cadets. It served gallantly at Shiloh in April 1862 and suffered heavily in that conflict. Lieutenant George Dixon was a member of the 21st who was wounded at Shiloh; he later died with his crew in command of the submarine Hunley at Charleston after sinking the first enemy warship by submarine warfare. The 21st manned and defended the forts at the mouth of Mobile Bay, Fort Gaines, Fort Morgan and Fort Powell at Grant's Pass as well as forts at Oven Bluff and Choctaw Bluff on the Alabama and Tombigbee Rivers north of Mobile. The 21st suffered the siege and defeat at Spanish Fort in April 1865. The abstracted compiled service records of almost 3,000 men who served are contained in this roster. Entries are arranged alphabetically by surname. A brief history of the 21st Alabama Infantry Volunteers, an appendix and a bibliography add to the value of this work.

The companies rendezvoused at Pensacola in February and March 1861, and about the 1st of April organized and elected regimental officers. The men were recruited from Barbour, Lowndes, Macon, Pike, Talladega, Tallapoosa, and Wilcox counties.
