Indonesian batik has been known to foreign countries and become a superior export product. Every region in Indonesia has batik products with their own peculiarities. Efforts to overcome the boredom of batik products are done through the development of motifs, techniques, and textile used. One of the developments of batik products is through exploration of the use of soil as natural dyes of batik. This exploration is a research activity carried out by researchers and teams for 3 years. The result obtained is the discovery of soil as a batik dye which is explored with a variety of techniques named by researchers with soil batik. Thank God, the authors say to Allah SWT who has given grace, strength and health until this work can be realized. The authors thank the Surabaya State University as the academic community and Kemenristekdikti (Ministry of higher education research and technology) through Surabaya State University who have funded this research for 3 years and the researchers have succeeded in producing works in the form of: soil batik products, copyright in the form of motif designs as many as 10 copyrights, patents and 2 works that are in the process of being granted, as well as the publication of scientific papers at indexed national and international seminars. In addition, thank you to the PKK (Family Welfare Education) Department where the author's career is to educate the next nation generation, Jawa Pos and FT Unesa (Faculty of Engineering of Surabaya State University) Communication Media who have published the soil and HKI batik works. The author also thanks you to her beloved husband and daughter who always provide support and prayers to the author, to the solid team and comrades Dra, Yulistiana, M. PSDM, her beautiful students Irma Mardita, Ninik Kholifah, Ika Zulfia, and Ms. Lailatur Albariya who helped the exploration process of soil batik. Some argue that the forces that engender diversity have been in the ascendancy for many years, increasing the need to focus on the social, political, and economic consequences of this diversity. What has become clear from these discussions is that nuanced understandings of diversity are desirable and obtainable through a focus on how this diversity has come about and the role of nation-states in the diversification of social life. In Language and Superdiversity, Zane Goebel explores how diversity has been managed in Indonesia since Dutch colonial times and how these practices have produced more diversity. Taking Inspiration from contemporary linguistic anthropological thought, Goebel explains how ethnolinguistic identity in Indonesia has been constituted, reproduced, and valued over the longue durée, and how bits of these identities are used in everyday talk amongst Indonesians living in Japan, Using a wide range of data, he demonstrates how and why management practices have produced hundreds of ethnolinguistic groups in Indonesia, while Increasing Indonesia's diversity in other ways. For transnational Indonesians living in Japan, earlier participation in these management practices has enabled them to draw upon their knowledge of other ethnolinguistic groups to pull off situated identity work in everyday talk. These knowledging practices, Goebel argues, help build and maintain relationships that are important for this group of relative strangers to survive and thrive abroad. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: This book charts the growth of the Indonesian nationalistic musical genre of lagu seriosa in relation to the archipelago's history in the 1950s and 1960s, examining how folk songs were implemented as a valuable tool for promoting government propaganda. The author reveals how the genre was shaped to fit state ideologies and agendas in the Sukarno and Soeharto eras. It also reveals the very significant role played by Radio Republik Indonesia in the genre’s development and dissemination. Little research has been done to investigate how Indonesian music contributed to nation-building during Indonesia’s immediate post-colonial period. Emulating the European art song, the genre was adapted to compose songs with the purpose of promoting a strengthened collective Indonesian identity, fostered by a group of musicians who functioned as gatekeepers, monitoring and devising various mechanisms for songs to conform to the propagandistic needs of the Indonesian government at the time. The result was the development of classical style of singing and the cultivation of a patriotic collection of music during the Guided Democracy period (1959–1965), which peaked at the height of the Konfrontasi (1963–1966). Lagu seriosa lost popularity as popular music infiltrated Indonesia in the 1970s, but it remains an iconic yet understudied aspect of the nationalistic agenda in Indonesia. The case studies of selected songs reflected continuity and change in musical style and over time. This book is of interest to scholars studying the intersection between history, politics, identity, arts and cultural studies in Indonesia. It is also of interest to researchers investigating the role of music in identity formation and nation-building more widely.
