Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Counties of Lehigh and Carbon, in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania IT is with the confident feeling that they have not merely fulfilled, but far exceeded, all promises made at the outstart that the publishers present to their patrons and the public, after considerable more than a year's labor' from the time of its inception, the now completed History of Lehigh and Carbon Counties. As the result of the united and careful labors of men thor oughly experienced in the collection, compilation, and writing of local history, and of scores of residents of the region which is the province of the work, including not only those who are mentioned as the writers of certain chapters, but others who have made lesser contributions, all especially qualified by original knowledge, by investigation, or by virtue of their positions to be the purveyors of local lore, - we think that the volume will merit and receive the favorable indorsement of those most competent to criticise the work which it contains, and that time will not modify in the slightest degree, but, on the contrary, greatly increase, their estimation. In the broadly comprehensive sense, Mr. Alfred Mathews was the author and editor of the history. He was assisted by Mr. Austin N. Hungerford of the publishers' corps. To these gentlemen should be accredited almost everything in the volume not especially denoted as the vork of others, embracing the larger part of its contents, and of course implying supervision of the whole. Other writers who have been engaged upon the work are here designated: Rev. A. R. Horne, D.D., was the author of the voluminous and interesting chapter (vi. In the history of Lehigh County) on the Pennsylvania Germans. E. V. D'invilliers was the writer of the chapter on the geology of Lehigh County, and Charles A. Ashburner, m.s., of that on Carbon County's rock and mineral formation. Of the townships of Lehigh County, Heidel berg and Lynn were written by Samuel J. Kistler, Esq.; Upper Macungie, by Rev. M. J. Kramlich Lower Macungie, by E. R. Lichtenwallner, Esq.; Upper and Lower Milford, by P. 7. Flores; Salisbury, by Professor J. O. Knauss; Upper Saucon, by Frank B. Heller; Weissenberg, by Solomon F. And Henry F. Rupp; Whitehall, by T. F. Diefenderfer, Esq., and F. J. Newhard, Esq.; North \vhitehall, by James L. Schaadt, Esq.; South Whitehall, by Rev. F. K. Bernd; and the borough of Emails, by H. W. Jarret-t. In the history of Carbon County, two of the general chapters - those on the legal and medical professions - were contributed by Dr. R. Leonard, of Mauch Chunk. Towamensing and Lower Towamensing were contributed by Co]. John Craig; the borough of Packerton, by W. Lee Stiles; the borough of Parryville, by Dennis Bauman; and the borough of \veatherly, by Dr. J. B. Tweedle. Besides these writers there are many others who have contributed church and school histories, etc., whose names are, as a rule, mentioned in connection with their articles. The number of these is very large. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Carbon County, Pennsylvania: Also Containing a Separate Account of Several Boroughs and Townships in the County, With Biographical Sketches It is to be regretted that Carbon county, rich in historical materials, has no historical society. Intimate contact with representative citizens in all parts of the county has convinced me that such an institution would not only be welcomed but gladly supported by them. There does not appear to be any good reason why the organization and establishment of a society of this nature should be further delayed, and it would afford me great pleasure to do everything within my power to assist in the consummation of this object. Had there been an institution of this description in the county, the time, labor and expense devoted to the preparation of the present work might have been greatly lessened, while the result might have been more satisfactory to me and the public alike. Every effort, however, has been made to gain all the light possible on the subjects treated in the following pages, and no pains have been spared to verify and authenticate all that has been here recorded. Much of the matter bearing on the early history of this general region has been drawn from among the mass of books, pamphlets and papers contained in the library of the Pennsylvania Historical Society. The public libraries of the Lehigh, Wyoming and Lackawanna Valleys have also been laid under contribution, as have the files of the newspapers of this and adjoining counties, the court records at Mauch Chunk and at Easton, and the various bureaus and departments of the state government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History, Government and Geography of Carbon County, Pennsylvania Our education to-day lacks thoroughness. Children are taught a great many things not necessary for them to know, and they are not properly grounded in things that are essential. The lawmakers, the newspapers, the business men, and the general public are about unanimous on this point. The opinion is general that children on leaving school have accumulated a wide variety of information which helps them but little, if at all, toward making a living or of being of service to any one. Schools should be modified to overcome these Objections. Many portions of the common branches do not in any vital way touch the life Of industry which most of the children will want to, or will have to live. It is possible to select the absolute essentials which form the basis of later school work as well as of practical life, and make these the subject matter Of instruction. SO much of what is unessential may be filtered out, that time may be found to do well and thoroughly what is really necessary, and yet leave time for the introduction of things which will fit children more directly for service. We must not continue to turn children out of school who are utterly unequipped for their duties, or who have only the vaguest notions of anything that is useful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Catasauqua in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania At a regularly called meeting of the Historical Committee of the Old Home Week Association, held in the parlors of the Phoenix Fire Co., November 29, 1913, James F. Lambert and Henry J. Reinhard were unanimously elected editors of a proposed History of Catasauqua, which it was resolved to publish. At a meeting of the same Committee held in the Directors' Room of the High School Building, May 6, 1914, it was resolved that one thousand copies of the History be printed. History is a written statement of what is known; an account of that which exists or has existed. The task of the historian lies in his search for authenticity. The editors of this volume addressed letters and series of questions to practically every industry and individual in Catasauqua, inquiring after definite data, in order that they might make the subject-matter authoritative. "Many men, many minds," is verified by the fact that more than once have they heard two persons of equal intelligence relate the same incident along such vastly different lines that it did not at all seem like the same incident. May the reader who will discover fancied inaccuracies be sure to balance well his own mind and recollect that there are other minds, both clear and strong, that see or recall the incident from a different angle. Furthermore, the editors of this book did not write an essay on the subject assigned them. They have not expanded on the philosophy of the theme. They have striven diligently to tell the true story of the life of Catasauqua, and her people, in the briefest form possible. This they did and nothing more. For the prompt and many courteous replies to their inquiries they are truly grateful. They deem it a privilege to acknowledge the benevolent courtesy of Mr. William H. Glace, Esq., who favored them with his recent book (1914) on "Early History and Reminiscences of Catasauqua," with permission to "take all or such portions as you desire in the preparation of your pamphlet for Old Home Week." Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Northampton County (Pennsylvania) And the Grand Valley of the Lehigh, Vol. 2 The original township of Bethlehem was erected in 1746. It embraced within its limits all of the area of Upper and Lower Nazareth townships, and the boroughs of Bethlehem, Freemansburg and Nazareth. Its present boundaries are: On the north, Lower Nazareth; on the'east, Palmer town ship; ou the south, the Lehigh river, separating it from Lower Saucon township; and on the west by Hanover township and a portion of Lehigh county. The township is watered by the Lehigh river, Monocacy creek, and several smaller streams that empty into the Lehigh; one of them was once called Nancy's Run, from an old colored fortune-teller who lived about a half-mile up the creek. The lands now embraced in the lower portion of the township were formerly known as Drylands, which were thought to be irreclaimable, arid and' barren, and deemed unfit for habitation; they are now, however, among the most productive of the county. This territory was a favorite place for the hunting and fishing ground of the Indians, and it was between Free mansburg and Bethlehem that their famous Minisink Path crossed the Lehigh river. Arrow-heads and stone pestles and even tomahawks have often been brought to light by the farmer's plough.
