Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Catholic Church in the United States, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time; With Biographical Sketches of the Living Bishops The long and unbroken line of Sovereign Pontiffs, who have governed the Church from St. Peter to Leo XIII., shews few reigns more illustrious or more brilliant than that of the present Holy Father. Announced by the prophetic words, A Light In Heaven, he has well real-zed the prediction; for he has guided the world by his wisdom and learning, his prudence and fortitude, his ability as a Sovereign and his sanctity as a Pontiff. Gioacchino Pecci was born at Carpineto, in the Volscian mountains, on March 2, 1810, during the Pontificate of another imprisoned Pope, Pius VII. His youth was remarkable for a serious and reflecting cast, united with gentleness of soul, sweetness of temper, and a desire to oblige. His home training was refined and suited to his rank. When yet young he was sent to the Roman College conducted by the recently restored Society of Jesus; and his final ecclesiastical studies were made at the Roman Academy of Nobles. His modesty could not conceal his genius and energy, and he soon became known to that fine judge of human character, Pope Gregory XVI., for the noble young Pecci had given everywhere evidences of great piety and intellect. On his ordination in 1838 he was appointed a domestic prelate. At Benevento, an appendage of the Holy See, though situated in the kingdom of Naples, disorder and crime prevailed, smuggling and brigand age had long been prevalent, and the participators in these vices were the leading families, who had for ages lived on the proceeds of illicit trade and of violence. There is enormous value in a short, reliable, and careful study of a sequence of events that may have unfamiliar joinings and passageways to modern believers...' - Catholic Historical Review 'A short, readable and informed survey of church history.' - The Church of England Newspaper 'A rich foundation for Catholic understanding and witness.' - Catholic San Francisco ____________ A one-volume history of the Christian people from Pentecost to the present day, with principal focus on the Catholic Church. Having passed AD 2000 it seems appropriate and necessary to have a new short history of the first two millennia of the Christian era. In the last half century there has been a massive amount of research into Church history, published in learned articles and in multi-volume works. Full notice is taken of these recent scholarly initiatives in writing this short account, which is also eminently readable. In each section there is a balance between the institutional and the more directly religious dimensions of the Church - here are some of the elements: bishops, canon law, charity, councils crusades, devotions, heresies, laity, liturgy, martyrs, missionaries, parishes, pilgrimages, popes, prayer, priesthood, religious orders, sacraments, schools, theologians, universities and the vita consacrata. The scope is wide; the pace of the narrative is attractive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanded and updated for the new millennium. Covering the life of Christ, the election of Pope Benedict XVI, and everything in between, A Concise History of the Catholic Church has been one of the bestselling religious histories of the past two decades and a mainstay for scholars, students, and others looking for a definitive, accessible history of Catholicism. With a clarity that will appeal to any reader, Thomas Bokenkotter divides his study into five parts that correspond to the major historical and epochal developments in Catholicism. His authoritative, thorough approach takes readers from the Church’s triumph over paganism, through "the sound and fury of renewal," to a new section devoted to such topics as dissent and current developments in the ecumenical movement. Informative illustrations throughout the book, new to this edition, enrich the reader's experience, and the addition of a wide-ranging bibliography increases its value as a sourcebook.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Catholic Church in Indiana, Vol. 1 of 2 Nothing of great importance has been overlooked or minimized nor has any considerable number of lesser matters been. Either neglected or exaggerated. Facts and events are eloquent even when simply narrated, and they are argumentative, too, when pre sented in the relation of cause and effect. As set forth in this history they tell of a Providence that directs the affairs of the church and bids Christians hope for the increase of the kingdom of God on earth. Being connected even as instruments in the furtherance of these things-a great distinction when properly considered - may we not indulge the hope also that our labors inay meet with the approval and receive the substantial support of those in whose interests they have been performed? This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church History, Volume One offers a unique contextual view of how the Christian church spread and grew from its development in the days of Jesus to the years leading up to the Reformation. Looking closely at the integral link between the history of the world and that of the church, Church History paints a portrait of God's people within its setting of times, cultures, and events that both influenced and were influenced by the church. FEATURES: Maps, charts, and illustrations spanning the time from the first through the thirteenth centuries. Overviews of the Roman, Greek, and Jewish worlds and how they developed or declined. Insights into the church's relationship to the Roman Empire, with glimpses into pagan attitudes toward Christians. Explanations of the role of art, architecture, literature, and philosophy—both sacred and secular—in the Church. Details on the major theological controversies of the periods. Each chapter also contains callout passages from Scripture to assist in understanding the narrative of the Church, even to the present day, as part of the greater narrative of the Bible. AUTHOR'S PERSPECTIVE: Scholar and writer Everett Ferguson wrote this history of the church from the perspective that such a history is the story of the greatest movement and community the world has known. It's a human story of a divinely called people who wanted to live by a divine revelation. It's a story of how they succeeded and how they failed or fell short of their calling. From the Apostle Paul to the apologists and martyrs of the second century to Martin Luther, the historical figures detailed are people who have struggled with the meaning of the greatest event in history—the coming of the Son of God—and with their role in that event and in the lives of God's people.
