This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural History of the Azores, or Western Islands IN the following pages I have endeavoured to give the result of a personal investigation of the Fauna and Flora of the Azores, made during a four months' visit to the archipelago. The materials accumulated during my stay consisted of numerous specimens, illustrating nearly every branch of Natural History. Since my return, these have been placed in the hands of several naturalists for determination. In their various reports, which constitute a large portion of this volume, all that was previously known relating to the Natural History of these islands has been incorporated, thus bringing our knowledge of the subject, in a complete form, down to the present time. Book Synopsis Island Life, Or, The Phenomena and Causes of Insular Faunas and Floras by : Alfred Russel Wallace
Download or read book Island Life, Or, The Phenomena and Causes of Insular Faunas and Floras written by Alfred Russel Wallace and published by . This book was released on 1880 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wallace's Island Life is one of the foundation works of zoogeography. It focused on the detailed problems of animal dispersal and speciation. Like Darwin, Wallace classified islands as either oceanic (no previous connection to a land mass) or continental (previously connected to a land mass). He considered the means by which each class of island might become colonized, the types of animals most likely to perform the necessary migrations, and the conditions-such as major climactic or geologic change-under which the migrations might have been made. Wallace was the first to use the new knowledge of Pleistocene ice ages to explain certain phenomena of animal distribution, and in Island Life he speculated about the possible causes of glaciation. He was one of the few 19th-century scientists to realize that astronomical causes alone would not suffice, but had to be combined with a corresponding elevation in the northern land mass -- Abe books website.
Book Synopsis Volcanic Geology of São Miguel Island (Azores Archipelago) by : J.L. Gaspar
Download or read book Volcanic Geology of São Miguel Island (Azores Archipelago) written by J.L. Gaspar and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Azores archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean is composed of nine volcanic islands and São Miguel is the largest and most volcanically active. During the past 5000 years several eruptions have taken place on the three active central volcanoes – Sete Cidades, Fogo and Furnas – and in the basaltic fissure systems of Picos and Congro. There is evidence that Furnas was in eruption when the first settlers arrived some time between 1439 and 1443. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries there were two explosive sub-Plinian eruptions, Fogo in 1563 and Furnas in 1630. The last eruption on land occurred in the Picos Fissural Volcanic System in 1652, involving the extrusion of lava domes. In 22 chapters, this volume considers the volcanic geology of the island under the headings of geological setting, volcanic history, geological hazards and risk assessment, volcano monitoring and natural resources.
