On the contrary, it must have been supposed, that the estab lishment of distant colonies, dependant on the parent state, nursed by its care, protected by its arms, and entirely subject to, its power, would have tended to colonial oppression which by strengthening the power of the sovereign, would re-act upon the parent state, and thus tend to the oppression of both. Whatever may have been the case, with others, this was un doubtedly true of the Spanish Colonies, down to the period of the late revolution; Their degradation and Oppression aliena ted them from the parent country, and prepared their minds to embrace the first opportunity to throw off the yoke of a' dis tant and foreign power, which instead of conducting towards them, like an affectionate mother, treated them with the jealousy, selfishness, and cruelty of an unfe'eling step-dame. Of the Republics of Mexico, Guatemala, Columbia, Peru, the United Provinces of South America and Chili To give some account of the revolution of i' a late Spanish Colonies in South America - {a revolution which has terminated so gloriously, Quid is characterized by so many striking and interesting overlay - is the object of this work. The author, or compiler, 1s aware that the time has not yet arrived for composing a complete history of these events noris the m ted States the place fbr such a work to be written. The work 1s intended only as a popular sketch, or outline, presenting in one view all that is most valuable and interesting in the numerous publications on this sshject. The lively interest which the citizens of the United States justly feel ins. Revolution, having so important an influence on the cause of MM. And on the destinies of the new world - which has brought into existence six independent nations, on the same continent, some of them their neigh bours - seemed to require a work, presenting, in a cheap and popular firm, a general and connected view of these important events. We are not aware that any similar work has appeared, although there have been nu merous valuable publications, affording much information, concernhg certain periods of the revolution. To render a work of this description more complete and valuable, it was thought best pendium of the history and condition of Spanish revolution, and a geographical and political view of the present snowed of the new republics. A knowledge of the geography of the country, and in some measure its early history, is requisite to a correct understanding of the events of the revolution. To facilitate this knowledge, the book is accompanied with two maps, one of Mexico, and one of South fisheries, compiled from the latest and best authorities, and behaved to be the most correct maps ever published of these countries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of South America and Mexico, Vol. 2 of 2: Comprising Their Discovery, Geography, Politics, Commerce and Revolutions The climate, though hot, is neither so unhealthy, nor dehili tating, as that of the seacoast, the air being refreshed and puri fied.by the strong breezes blowing constantly over this verdant plain, which extends not less than 300 miles in every direction, between the Andes and the Oronoco. The great valley of the Oronoco is wholly within the territory of the republic, and will, doubtless, at some future period, sustain a great population, when its resources become fully developed. The Oronoco is navigable for sea vessels, to the city of Angostura, and for smaller vessels, farther into the country. The use of steam boats will probably give great extension to the navigation of this river and its branches, as it is stated that the Meta is capable of being navigated to with in 150 miles of the city of Bogota. The next most considerable river is the Magdalena, which descends to the north more than 700 miles through the vallies of the Andes, and is navigable to the port of Honda, 550 miles from its entrance into the Atlantic. This river communicates directly with some of the richest sec tions of the republic, and is represented to be very favourable to steam navigation; the Cauca runs through a valley of the same name, and unites with the Magdalena. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a quarter of a century, Tulio Halperín Donghi's Historia Contemporánea de América Latina has been the most influential and widely read general history of Latin America in the Spanish-speaking world. Unparalleled in scope, attentive to the paradoxes of Latin American reality, and known for its fine-grained interpretation, it is now available for the first time in English. Revised and updated by the author, superbly translated, this landmark of Latin American historiography will be accessible to an entirely new readership. Beginning with a survey of the late colonial landscape, The Contemporary History of Latin America traces the social, economic, and political development of the region to the late twentieth century, with special emphasis on the period since 1930. Chapters are organized chronologically, each beginning with a general description of social and economic developments in Latin America generally, followed by specific attention to political matters in each country. What emerges is a well-rounded and detailed picture of the forces at work throughout Latin American history. This book will be of great interest to all those seeking a general overview of modern Latin American history, and its distinctive Latin American voice will enhance its significance for all students of Latin American history.

The attention of every one on deck was soon afterwards directed to the approach of one of her homeward-bound sisters, scarcely discernible, excepting by her lights. For the moment the aggregate roar of winds, waves, steam, canvas, cordage, and com mand seemed to be forgotten, and, in a silence that would make itself be felt, we distinctly heard the words All right given in a clear, ringing voice from her main deck as she came up abreast of us, and then rapidly disappeared in the darkness. Book excerpt: The Routledge History of Latin American Culture delves into the cultural history of Latin America from the end of the colonial period to the twentieth century, focusing on the formation of national, racial, and ethnic identity, the culture of resistance, the effects of Eurocentrism, and the process of cultural hybridity to show how the people of Latin America have participated in the making of their own history. The selections from an interdisciplinary group of scholars range widely across the geographic spectrum of the Latin American world and forms of cultural production. Exploring the means and meanings of cultural production, the essays illustrate the myriad ways in which cultural output illuminates political and social themes in Latin American history. From religion to food, from political resistance to artistic representation, this handbook showcases the work of scholars from the forefront of Latin American cultural history, creating an essential reference volume for any scholar of modern Latin America.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of North and South America, Vol. 1 of 2: From Its Discovery to the Death of General Washington To furnish the public with a cheap history of America, from its discovery, to its present state of civilization and importance, is an undertaking of such general utility, that the attempt, if it even fall short of complete execution, has a claim to a considerable share of indulgence. This is more especially the case, when the writer has to follow a historian of such great and just celebrity as Dr. Robertson, in at least one half of the work. To compose such a historical epitome as is desirable, from scattered materials, is a difficulty of such magnitude, as wholly to discourage the attempt; and to abridge the pages of so great an original, where there is nothing superfluous, nothing the reader would wish omitted, is a design, which to many will seem to border on temerity. But this abridgement has been preferred, as it is attended with the least chance of disappointment; and to borrow is not dishonorable, when the obligation is candidly acknowledged. In what relates to South America, Dr. Robertson's history has, therefore, been implicitly followed. His arrangement of the subject, his chronological order, and his very style have been adopted, as the best that can be chosen. To condense his details, to introduce only the most prominent and characteristic events, has been the principal effort, and invariable purpose of the epitomiser: endeavouring as he progressed, to preserve unbroken, the connexion and continuity of events; and in the whole, to present the reader with a brief, but interesting view, of one of the most important æras in the annals of the world.
