Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Thought in England, From the Reformation to the End of Last Century, Vol. 3: A Contribution to the History of Theology At the end of a work so extensive as this, an author, I suppose, always feels how much better it would be done if he had it to do again. When I began I had but a partial knowledge of the ground to be traversed, and of a few important parts I knew nothing. This is the cause of one or two irregularities which otherwise would have been avoided. Some writers, for instance, are noticed at more length than others who are perhaps of greater importance. In the preface to my essay on Pantheism I have recorded the circumstances which determined me to devote some years to the special study of theology. When I came to London, in 1859, I began a course of reading with the object of inquiring into the nature of revelation and the evidences by which it is supported. At the end of four years I had formed a plan of something like a complete history of theology, which would set forth the special character of Christianity and its relation to other religions. In the spring of 1863 I showed the outlines of my work to the late Professor Maurice, who had gone over large portions of the same field, and whose writings had been of great service to me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise History of Religion, Vol. 3 Is there, then, a dark chamber here, too, which we are afraid to examine - into which we dare not suffer the light of day to enter? So Colenso asked of the orthodox critics who, when he exposed the human and fallible authorship of the Old Testament, expressed alarm lest he should carry his method into the region of Christianity. In the present instalment of the History I have penetrated the dark chamber, and at least left the door ajar by which that influential person, the General Reader, may enter. He who has neither leisure, desire, nor opportunity to search the books catalogued at the close of the volume may secure a bird's-eye view of the main results of modern criticism of early Christianity and its literature. As in the previous volume on Judaism, so now, I have attempted to show the religious process in conjunction with the course of political events and with the march of secular literature. For religion forms part of sociology, and the story of the Church connects itself intimately with the life of the world at large. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of England, Vol. 3: A History for the People; The English Reformation Let us rapidly glance over the careers and characters Of this line of mighty prelates, with their awful claims to a supreme spiritual power. Sixtus IV., who filled the papal chair a.d. 1471 to 1484, began what may be termed the secularisation of the Papacy. Of him Machiavelli writes: He was the first Pope who began to show the extent Of the papal power, and how things that before were called errors could be hidden behind the papal authority. The his torian of these popes thus explains these weighty words: The papal power which Machiavelli had before his eyes was not the moral authority of the head of Christen dom, but the power Of an Italian prince who was engaged in consolidating his dominions into an important state This Object Sixtus IV. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Church of England, Vol. 3 of 3: From the Death of Elizabeth to the Present Time It was not till the middle of September that King James was convinced that he was threatened with an invasion by his son - in-law, and that the hearts of his people were already with the invader. A letter from the King of France conveyed the information. As the King read it, he turned pale and stood motionless. The letter dropped from his hand. His past errors, his future dangers rushed at once upon his thoughts. He strove to conceal his perturbation, but in doing so betrayed it; and his courtiers in affecting not to observe him betrayed that they did. 1.
