To the Present Time Its Churches Schools College Theological Seminary Literature, Volumes and Authors Notices of Prominent Families, and Chief Citizens the C The township Of Princeton is bounded on the north by Somerset County; on the east by Millstone River; on the west by the Province line, which separates it from the townships Of Hopewell and Lawrence; and on the south by the Delaware and Raritan Canal. When the township was first created, Stony Brook was made the line dividing Princeton from West Windsor, but the legislature has changed it by substituting the canal for the brook as the boundary, and thereby placing the princeton-basin property in the township of Princeton. The township is about five miles in length from north to south, and three miles in width; and, according to the last census; it contains three thousand nine hundred and twenty-three inhabitants. It embraces within its limits Rocky Hill Mountain, which lies across the northern portion Of the township, and is distant about two miles north from the limits of the borough. This mountainous ridge has been nearly cleared of its heavy forest, and much Of it is under cultivation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Headlines declare after each new hint of evidence that the Lost Colony--the English colonists left on Roanoke Island in 1587, including Virginia Dare--has been found. None of these claims pass muster as the historical, archaeological, and literary evidence presented here demonstrate. This book analayzes several hypotheses and demonstrates why none have been shown to be more probable than any of the others. To understand how the 1587 colonists became The Lost Colony, the authors recount the history of the English expeditions in the 1580s and the original searches for the colonists from 1590 until the 1620s. The archaeological evidence gathered from the 19th through the 21st centuries is presented. The book then examines how the disappearance of the colonists has been portrayed in pseudoscience, fiction, and popular culture from the beginnings until the present day. In the end, readers will have all the data they need to judge new claims concerning the fate of The Lost Colony.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of the Early Settlement and Present Advantages of Princeton, Illinois, Including Valuable Statistics, Etc: Also, a Brief Sketch of Bureau County, and a Business Directory The first settlement in what is now called the Township of Princeton was made in the spring of 1829, by Mr. Elijah Epperson, from Ohio. Several families were at this' time residing in the vicin ity, being scattered along the line of timber bordering on the Bureau creek; but few persons, however, were then residents of the county. Few individuals have even a faint conception of the picturesque appearance of the country, or the hardships endured by the early settlers of our town. The country then being in a state of nature, presented beauty in its wide spread plains, stretching as far as the eye could reach, covered with flowers of nearly every shade and color, and tall grass. Indeed they were beautiful when in their full bloom, and would excite admiration in every lover of wild scenery. Book excerpt: The battles of Trenton and Princeton have been the subject of several recent books, but this story complements them by expanding the story to include the many experiences of the people of Princeton in the wider Revolution and their contributions to it. This story combines social history with the better known military and political history of the Revolution. It does not just deal with amorphous groups and institutions, but rather with individuals working with and affected by various groups on both sides of the conflict. Readers can identify with real people they get to know in the story. This story of Princeton unfolds in narrative format and, while deeply researched, reads more like a novel than an academic study.
