Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New Haven County, Connecticut, Vol. 1 of 2 The preparation of this History of New Haven County was begun more than two years ago, work on it having been assiduously prose outed since October, 1889. The magnitude of the undertaking has been much greater than was contemplated, and the volume of matter has far exceeded the limit originally set by the publishers. It has been found necessary, after the book had been sold, in order to prop erly embrace these hundreds of additional pages, to bind it in two handsome volumes instead of one, as purposed and agreed with the subscribers. These changes have been made at an expenditure of several thousand dollars - apparently a loss to the publishers, but clearly a gain to their patrons. They feel that they have been some what compensated for this extra outlay by the appreciative support they have received, in spite of many adverse circumstances. The publication, in 1886, of a voluminous and exhaustive history of the city of New Haven so fully supplied the demand in that locality for such a local work that no patronage was there solicited or received for this book. In the city of Waterbury, also, a comprehensive history is being prepared by careful and competent writers, which will afford the people of that section of the county a vast fund of information upon such local matters as will most interest them. Naturally, that prospective work limited the patronage for our book, in that town. Very properly, then, since the histories of these localities have recently been so fully recorded elsewhere, and a sense of obligation does not demand their repetition by us, the narratives of these two towns are not here given in detail. But complete outline histories of them have instead been prepared, wherein may be found all the salient features of the events connected with them since their settlement. We believe that this arrangement will be generally satisfactory to the citizens of the county, as it has permitted us to write the accounts of other towns, with much greater attention to details, so that a very good knowledge of their afiairs and relation to the body corporate can be obtained. In general, these narratives are far more comprehensive and finished than anything heretofore published; and in several instances they are the only accounts of the kind, being the results of original investiga tions by the compilers of this book. A number of these are citizens of the county, and being men of excellent character, their accounts of the local history of their respective towns may be accepted as based upon the facts of the subjects treated. Leaving a few squatters, as it were, for the perilous task of holding the ground until he could return with the larger party, he sailed back to Boston. It seems to have been no twenty-four hour trip from New Haven to Boston in those days for it was impossible to get the party back before winter - which was as well for their health, no doubt. New Haven climate, as we may know, is more favorably introduced with spring than with winter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commemorative Biographical Record of New Haven County, Connecticut: Containing Biographical Sketches of Prominent and Representative Citizens, and of Many of the Early Settled Families In entering upon the duties of this place, my thoughts turn rather to the past than to the subject of the present hour. I feel that it is an honored place, honored by the labors of one who has been the guardian of American science from its child hood, who here first opened to the country the won derful records of Geology; whose word-s of elo quence and earnest truth were but the overflow of a soul full of noble instincts and warm sympathies, the whole throwing a peculiar charm over his learn ing, and rendering his name beloved as well as illus trions. Just fifty years since, Professor Silliman took his station at the head of chemical and geologi cal science in this college. Geology was then hardly known by the name in the land, out of these walls. Two years before, previous to his tour in Europe, the whole cabinet of Yale was a half bushel of un labelled stones. On visiting England he found even in London no school, public or private, for geologi cal instruction, and the science was not named in the English universities. To the mines, quarries and cliffs of England, the crags Of' Scotland, and the meadows of Holland, he looked for knowledge, and from these and the teachings of Murray, Jameson, Hall, Hope and Play-fair, at Edinburgh, Professor Silliman returned equipped for duty and creating almost out of nothing a department not before rec ognized in any institution in America. While in Edinburgh, Professor Silliman became interested in the discussions. Then at their height between the W ernerians and Huttonians. And attend ed lectures on geology; and on his return he began the study of the mineral structure of the vicinity Of New Haven. I arrived in New Haven fro-m Scot land Ou the first of June, 1806. And on the first day of September I read to the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences a report on the mineral structure Of the environs of New Haven, which was printed in the first volume of the Transactions of the Acad emy. This report occupies fourteen pages, and hav ing been published more than fifty-two years ago When I was twenty - seven years of age - I have been gratified to find that an attentive re-perusal yester day (jan. 6, 1859) - after I know not how many years of Oblivion - suggested very few alterations, and I have not discovered any important errors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Invasion of New Haven, Connecticut As historian have told us, the Colony of Connecticut made itself very obnoxious to the British, Hessian and Tory troops stationed in and around the neighborhood of New York, by having manufactured largely for the Continentals munitions of war, army and navy supplies, besides fitting out frequent expeditions by land and water, causing great annoyance to the invaders and their Tory sympathizers, and the commanding general of the army, Sir Henry Clinton, Kt., who, in the spring of 1779, had his headquarters at the city of New York. Sir Henry, therefore, considering the great assistance this Colony had rendered to the rebellion, it having furnished more troops than any other except Massachusetts, and as more than three-fourths of its inhabitants were disloyal, conceived a plan to inflict on it a severe punishment as soon as his successful expedition up the Hudson should return, after it had captured Stony Point and other strong works held by the Americans on both sides of the river below West Point. He accordingly organized a plan for a summer's campaign into Connecticut, the approach to be made from New York via East River and Long Island Sound. The land forces for this expedition, 3,000 well disciplined and perfectly equipped troops, were placed under the command of Major General William Tryon, who was then Colonial Governor of New York. They were embarked on board a fleet just returned from an expedition to the Chesapeake which had been commanded by Commodore Sir George Collier, Kt., who was then the senior officer on the North American station and acting commander-in-chief of all the British naval forces in American waters. The fleet was manned by a crew of sailors and marines estimated at 2,000 men, and was the largest that had ever entered Long Island Sound. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Connecticut, Vol. 1 of 2: From the First Settlement of the Colony to the Adoption of the Present Constitution IN committing to the press the second edition of the History of Con necticut, I take the Opportunity to express my gratification to the public for the very liberal patronage hitherto bestowed upon the work. The task of preparing these volumes was not commenced with any idea of pecuniary profit, but rather with a view of filling a void which seemed to exist in the historic annals of my native State. The valuable researches of my predecessor, Dr. Trumbull, terminated several years anterior to the American Revolution; from which time onward, Connecticut was without any written history whatever. My main object in undertaking the work, (as I stated in the preface to the first edition, ) was to turn the attention of the descendants of the Connecticut emigrants from the pre sent to the glorious past; to remind them of the sacrifices, the toils, the sufferings of their fathers' fathers; and to awaken, though it be with a momentary breath, the coals that once glowed like the vestal fire day and night upon the altar of Freedom. Those who read these pages, will find that they little need to be ashamed of their origin, and that it can be said of them as truly and in a higher sense than the fifth Henry could say to his tr00ps on the day of battle, that their blood is fet from fathers of war-proof. Indeed, no State since the fall of Lacedaemon has ever, in the history of the world, waged so many wars in the same number of years, with equal success, or voluntarily borne such heavy burdens, as Connecticut. If I have failed to prove these facts, I am sure they are capable of proof when some author more worthy of the theme, shall address his energies to the task. Meanwhile, I humbly commend my labors to my brothers who still remain upon the soil of the State, and to those who, in regions far remote, yet turn their eyes with a fond regard toward the green hills and soft valleys where lie the bones of the men who felled the forest and planted the vine.
