Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1906, this classic nine-volume history of the nation of India places it among the storied lands of antiquity, alongside Egypt, China, and Mesopotamia. Edited by American academic ABRAHAM VALENTINE WILLIAMS JACKSON (1862-1937), professor of Indo-Iranian languages at Columbia University, it offers a highly readable narrative of the Indian people and culture through to the time of its publication, when the nation was still part of the British Empire. Volume IX, Historic Accounts of India by Foreign Travellers, Classic, Oriental, and Occidental, compiled by the editor, features such entertaining and enlightening selections as: [ an account of India by the Greek writer Strabo [ the practice of suttee, or widow-burning, in India, according to numerous foreign accounts [ a description of India in general by the Chinese Buddhist pilgrim Hiuan Tsang [ Al-Biruni's Arabic account of the Hindu religion [ an account of the Temple of Somnath by the Persian geographer Kazvini [ the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama at Calicut and his reception by the Zamorin [ Hindu manners and customs as described by the Dutch missionary Abraham Roger [ a description of Bengal by the French voyager Francois Pyrard de Laval [ Sir Thomas Roe's first audience with the Great Mogul [ and much more. This beautiful replica of the 1906 first edition includes all the original illustrations.
Book Synopsis Polycoloniality by : Saugata Bhaduri
Download or read book Polycoloniality written by Saugata Bhaduri and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycoloniality is a study of the activities of non-British European powers and players - primarily the Portuguese, the Dutch, the French, the Danish, the 'Germans' (representatives of the Austrian and Prussian empires), the Swedish and the Greek - in Bengal from the late 13th to the early 19th century, and their role in shaping Bengal's brush with 'colonial modernity' prior to, and possibly more foundationally than, the English. Much of the traditional historiography of colonialism, in South Asia in general and Bengal in particular, and the resultant postcolonial commonsense, is woefully mononational, with the focus being almost exclusively on England and its colonial exploits. This is obviously factually incorrect and inadequate, with the multiple European nations named above having had simultaneous colonial contact with Bengal from the 16th century, and there having been a steady flow of Europeans, primarily Italians, to Bengal from at least the late 13th century. More importantly, it is these multiple European players, rather than the English, who can be credited with the setting up of the first cosmopolitan cities in Bengal, its first colleges and universities, the beginnings of print culture in Bengali, the foundations of the modern linguistic, literary and cultural registers of Bengal, the first instances of social and political reforms, etc. Apart from an elaboration of all the above, can Polycoloniality, or a re-look at Bengal's colonial history through the lens of plurality, also offer a template to understand the multinational forms of current new-imperialism more fittingly than postcolonial commonsense can?

Book Synopsis The Crash of A Civilization by : Kanchan Banerjee
Download or read book The Crash of A Civilization written by Kanchan Banerjee and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2022-07-13 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Current condition of each citizen, the society, and the nation are the result of a deeply complex history. But what we know from history books, especially academic textbooks, are constructs based on the narratives of political powers, colonists, and outdated socioeconomic analysts. The time has come to know and understand our true history from fresh and updated perspectives. The subject of this book is how foreign ideologies and forces Christian, Islamic, and later colonists, western and Marxists' profound and long-term influence have impacted India, her society, and people. With a computer science back- ground, Kanchan Banerjee makes this remarkable and significant contribution, attempting to depict the current era with unique and lively storytelling using carefully studied evidence, logical deduction, and analysis. He has given detailed and comprehensive descriptions and assessments from pre-Islamic Arabia's history, foreign attacks and invasions of the Huns, the Turks to the Islamic rule and occupation in Delhi, and the British colonial and imperial atrocities. How did the crash and fall of a great ancient civilization happen? How has it been wounded the body and soul of a nation to break into several pieces? And what is the way to change the direction to the path of recovery and revival? This book is an effort to find the answers to these questions from our true history. If we know our past, we can change our future as well.
