Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of India The rise of Mohammed and the spread of Islam were events fraught with momentous consequences for the East and for the history of the world. India came in for her share in the changes thus brought about and was subjected to the religious and political sway of this great movement whose impulse she first felt in the eighth century of the Christian era. So important in general and so far-reaching were the influences exerted that few readers will object to the fact that three vol umes of the present series are devoted to this period of Indian history which is commonly designated as the Mediaeval Period. Since then the work has been completed, all the earlier chapters have been revised, and no effort has been spared to make the book representative of the state of early Indian historical studies at the end of 1920. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of India India is inhabited by various races, who entered the country at different periods Of time and from different directions. The black Dravidians, inhabiting the Deccan and Southern India, came from the east at some early period long before the begin ning of history. The Mongolians, inhabiting the north-eastern corners Of India, came from Mongolia and China through Tibet and the south-eastern provinces of the Chinese empire. Aryans - The Aryans, who form the vast majority Of the in uential classes, entered India from the west, at a time esti mated at from 4000 b.c. To 1500 The Shemitic races came in the train Of Muhammadan conquest from the west. From beyond the north-western corner Of India, at various periods of Indian history, there came men Of various races. None of these was very numerous. Those who came first have merged into the Aryan population, but those who came later can still be traced as distinct. And, last of all, within the last four hundred years, came the Aryan races from Europe by sea. In the beginning, commerce was their great Object but they all strove for supremacy by sea and by land. None, however, achieved so marked a success as the British. Dravidians. - Oi the history Of the Dravidian races we know almost nothing. Scholars think that they were the earliest settlers in India. The vast majority have adopted Aryan civilization, and the rest are still to be found everywhere in hills and jungles in Central and Southern India. But they seem to have had their last kingdoms in the extreme south of India, in the Pandya and Kerala countries, where property descends not to the son but to the daughter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of India, Vol. 1 But the excellence of histories derived from European researches alone does not entirely set aside the utility of similar inquiries conducted un der the guidance of impressions received in India; which, as they rise from a separate source, may sometimes lead to different conclusions. Few are likely to take up these volumes unless they are previously interested in the subject, and such persons may not be unwilling to examine it from a fresh point of View: if the result suggests no new opinions, it may at least assist in deciding on those contested by former writers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Student's Manual of the History of India To MY readers. - I have been induced to write this Manual of the History of India to supply a want which I have ob served to exist among aii ciasses or' English people. Most of' my young friends tell me they are never taught anything about India; and while I deplore this, I also see that many persons of mature age are deterred by their length, and other causes, from attempting the perusal of the larger Indian his tories. It occurred to me, therefore, that a complete, but easy history, might be acceptable and useful to all; andi was the more led to this consideration from my own expe rience; for I do not know of any work from Which enough can be learned without difficulty - either to satisfy present requirements, or to induce a more general study. The large Histories of India, besides being voluminous, are costly; most of them are out of print, and thus beyond the reach of ordi nary students. Many of them are only fi'agments - histories of peculiar periods or peoples; and thus reference is required to many works by the student who desires to follow the oom plete history of India in all its branches. Cerebrals and nasals are unmarked, as the omission will not confuse any one acquainted with Eastern languages, and my experience, after many years teaching of Sanskrit, Tamil, and Telugu, is that it is impossible for any one unfamiliar with the sound of the languages as spoken in India to acquire even an approximate pronunciation of these letters. I regret that it is impossible for me fully to acknow ledge my indebtedness to the many works I have consulted. To the delegates of the Clarendon Press I am especially indebted for permission to quote from the Series of the Sacred Books of the East - a monumental undertaking full of evidence of the scholarship, untiring industry and wide sympathies in all matters connected with the East of Professor The Right Honourable F. Max Muller. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of History: India This being a portion of history with which the general reader is less familiar than with that embraced in the preceding series of this work, the choice has been made under the impression that it may lead to a more extended reading of those annals which con tain some of the most interesting facts to be found in the records of ages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of India From the Earliest Ages, Vol. 1 More than a century has passed away since the rise Of British ascendancy in India, and yet a history which should combine a tolerably exhaustive review of the religion and civilization of the Hindus, together with an exposition of the policy which has hitherto guided the British Govern ment in its dealings with Native powers, is still a deside ratum in European literature. Accordingly this task has been attempted during a residence of some years in the country, under circumstances peculiarly favourable to its accomplishment; and in announcing the early publication of the first three volumes, it seems desirable to indicate the general character and scope of the entire work. The materials for the History of India may be indicated under three distinct heads, viz. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of the Indian Peoples How Hinduism, while sufficing to organize the Indian communities into a social and religious confederacy, failed to knit them together into a coherent nation. Bengal was destined, by her position, to receive the human overflow from the ancient breeding-grounds of Central Asia. Waves of conquest from the north were as inevitable in early times, as are the tidal waves from the ocean at the present day. But such conquests, although rapid, were never enduring; and although wide-spread, were never complete. The religious and social organization of Hinduism never succumbed. The greatest of India's conquerors, the Mughals, were being crushed by Hindu confederacies before their supremacy had lasted 130 years. So far as can now be estimated, the advance of the British power alone saved the Delhi Empire from dismemberment by the Hindu Marhattas, Rajputs, and Sikhs. The British Rule has endured, because it is wielded in the joint interest of all the Indian races. But while these thoughts have long been present in my mind, I have tried not to obtrude them on my pages. For I hope that this little book will reach the hands of many young people who look on history merely as a record of facts, and not as a compendium of philosophy. The greatest service which an Indian historian can render at present to India, is to state the actual facts in such a way that they will be read. If my story is found to combine truth with simplicity, it will have attained all that I aimed at. If it teaches young Englishmen and young natives of India to think more kindly of each other, I shall esteem myself richly rewarded.
