Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early twentieth century witnessed the rise of middle-class mass periodicals that, while offering readers congenial material, also conveyed new depictions of manliness, liberal education, and the image of business leaders. "Should Your Boy Go to College?" asked one magazine story; and for over two decades these middle-class magazines answered, in numerous permutations, with a collective "yes!" In the course of interpreting these themes they reshaped the vision of a college education, and created the ideal of a college-educated businessman.Volume 24 of the Perspectives on the History of Higher Education: 2005 provides historical studies touching on contemporary concerns--gender, high-ability students, academic freedom, and, in the case of the Barnes Foundation, the authority of donor intent. Daniel Clark discusses the nuanced changes that occurred to the image of college at the turn of the century. Michael David Cohen offers an important corrective to stereotypes about gender relations in nineteenth-century coeducational colleges. Jane Robbins traces how the young National Research Council embraced the cause of how to identify and encourage superior students as a vehicle for incorporating wartime advances in psychological testing. Susan R. Richardson considers the long Texas tradition of political interference in university affairs. Finally, Edward Epstein and Marybeth Gasman shed historical light on the recent controversy surrounding the Barnes Foundation. The volume also contains brief descriptions of twenty recent doctoral dissertations in the history of higher education. This serial publication will be of interest to historians, sociologists, and of course, educational policymakers.

Book excerpt: "Philanthropy is typically considered to be within the province of billionaires. This book broadens that perspective by highlighting modest acts of giving by African Americans on behalf of their own people. Examining the important tradition of Black philanthropy, this work documents its history: its beginning as a response to discrimination through self-help among freed slaves, and its expansion to include the support of education, religion, the arts, and legal efforts on behalf of civil rights. Using diverse approaches, the authors illuminate a new world of philanthropy - one that will be of interest to scholars and students alike. Chapters review the contributions of such major figures as Booker T. Washington and Thurgood Marshall, and discuss the often-surprising practices and methods of contemporary African American donors."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “bracing and well-argued” study of America’s college debt crisis—“necessary reading for anyone concerned about the fate of American higher education” (Kirkus). College is far too expensive for many people today, and the confusing mix of federal, state, institutional, and private financial aid leaves countless students without the resources they need to pay for it. In Paying the Price, education scholar Sara Goldrick-Rab reveals the devastating effect of these shortfalls. Goldrick-Rab examines a study of 3,000 students who used the support of federal aid and Pell Grants to enroll in public colleges and universities in Wisconsin in 2008. Half the students in the study left college without a degree, while less than 20 percent finished within five years. The cause of their problems, time and again, was lack of money. Unable to afford tuition, books, and living expenses, they worked too many hours at outside jobs, dropped classes, took time off to save money, and even went without adequate food or housing. In many heartbreaking cases, they simply left school—not with a degree, but with crippling debt. Goldrick-Rab combines that data with devastating stories of six individual students, whose struggles make clear the human and financial costs of our convoluted financial aid policies. In the final section of the book, Goldrick-Rab offers a range of possible solutions, from technical improvements to the financial aid application process, to a bold, public sector–focused “first degree free” program. "Honestly one of the most exciting books I've read, because [Goldrick-Rab has] solutions. It's a manual that I'd recommend to anyone out there, if you're a parent, if you're a teacher, if you're a student."—Trevor Noah, The Daily Show

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annual compilation presents four papers on different aspects of the history of higher education in Europe and the United States. The first paper is "The Rights of Man and the Rites of Youth: Fraternity and Riot at Eighteenth Century Harvard" by Leon Jackson. This paper argues that the lines of division in the student body at eighteenth-century Harvard were drawn between two competing understandings of friendship and association prevalent during this period and analyzes social order and disorder in the college between 1788 and 1794. The second paper is "The Era of Multipurpose Colleges in American Higher Education, 1850-1890 by Roger L. Geiger. This paper focuses on small multipurpose colleges and the demographic and economic factors which encourages both their rise and eventual decline from 1850 to 1890. The third paper is titled: "A "Curious Working of Cross Purposes" in the Founding of the University of Chicago" by Willard J. Pugh. It reviews the founding negotiations among various groups wishing to found a first class Baptist university; the roles of such individuals as John D. Rockefeller and William Rainey Harper; and the institution's early commitment to research. The fourth paper is "Patterns of Access to the Modern European Universities: The Social Origins of Students" by Fritz Ringer. This paper critiques the assumption that expanded enrollment since the early nineteenth century was a reflection of democratization and provides data from Germany, France, England, and Scotland to support a two-stage process of expanded schooling in which little increased access to the most favored occupations results. Also provided is a review essay by W. Bruce Leslie, "The Academic Revolution Across Three Cultures,". An annotated list of recent dissertations in the field is included. Each of the four major papers contains extensive reference notes. (DB)
