Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cleopatra of Egypt, Antiquity's Queen of Romance The present book may be described as an experiment. I wished to ascertain whether one of the great women rulers of antiquity could not be made as interesting to the general reader as I some of the queens and empresses of more recent times would appear to be, if I may judge by the reception given to their biographies in this country and elsewhere. Among the women of old none seemed a more promising subject than Cleopatra the Great; for, while she is a character of world-wide celebrity and therefore requires no introduction to the most exclusive of readers, she has hitherto been treated almost always as though she were a follower in the train of two of the great personages in Roman history instead of meriting to be considered by herself. Cleopatra appeared to me undoubtedly to furnish a worthy subject for a biography, if sufficient material could be got together to render her life intelligible. One great disadvantage in writing of the Egyptian Queen, as compared with the Empress Josephine, for instance, lies in the absence in ancient days of the host of memoirists, brilliant or otherwise, but always somehow valuable, who make vivid the stories of modern heroes and heroines. Book excerpt: Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, was also a scholar, murderer, lover of Julius Caesar and Mark Antony and one of the most remarkable women in history. The distinguished historian and classicist Michael Grant confirms that her reputation as a temptress was well-founded. However, by unravelling the sources behind the tangle of myth, gossip and invention he shows that the popular image of a wayward woman opting for a life of sensuous luxury and neglecting her affairs of state is far from the truth. A brilliant linguist and the first of her Greek-speaking dynasty who learned Egyptian, she was reputed to be the author of treatises on agriculture, make-up and alchemy. Her love affairs were carefully calculated to further her plans to restore her empire to its former greatness and she was a ruthless foe to all who stood in her way. But dead on her golden couch in the palace at Alexandria her life seemed to have ended in failure; her dreams of empire shattered; her lover Mark Antony a suicide himself and she a prisoner of her conqueror Octavian. An unforgettable portrait of an extraordinary queen and her stormy life.

Book excerpt: She was the last ruler of the Macedonian dynasty of Ptolemies who had ruled Egypt for three centuries. Highly educated (she was the only one of the Ptolemies to read and speak ancient Egyptian as well as the court Greek) and very clever (her famous liaisons with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony were as much to do with politics as the heart), she steered her kingdom through impossibly taxing internal problems and railed against greedy Roman imperialism. Stripping away preconceptions as old as her Roman enemies, Joyce Tyldesley uses all her skills as an Egyptologist to give us this magnificent biography.

Book excerpt: The story of Cleopatra reads like a modern thriller. From her murderous family, who were not averse to killing parents, siblings, and their own children, to the civil wars between Pompey, Caesar, Octavian Augustus, Brutus, and Mark Antony, the tale of this last queen of Egypt is filled with high drama, tension and, ultimately, tragedy.

Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer brings to life the most intriguing woman in the history of the world: Cleopatra, the last queen of Egypt. Her palace shimmered with onyx, garnets, and gold, but was richer still in political and sexual intrigue. Above all else, Cleopatra was a shrewd strategist and an ingenious negotiator. Though her life spanned fewer than forty years, it reshaped the contours of the ancient world. She was married twice, each time to a brother. She waged a brutal civil war against the first when both were teenagers. She poisoned the second. Ultimately she dispensed with an ambitious sister as well; incest and assassination were family specialties. Cleopatra appears to have had sex with only two men. They happen, however, to have been Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, among the most prominent Romans of the day. Both were married to other women. Cleopatra had a child with Caesar and -- after his murder -- three more with his protégé. Already she was the wealthiest ruler in the Mediterranean; the relationship with Antony confirmed her status as the most influential woman of the age. The two would together attempt to forge a new empire, in an alliance that spelled their ends. Cleopatra has lodged herself in our imaginations ever since. Famous long before she was notorious, Cleopatra has gone down in history for all the wrong reasons. Shakespeare and Shaw put words in her mouth. Michelangelo, Tiepolo, and Elizabeth Taylor put a face to her name. Along the way, Cleopatra's supple personality and the drama of her circumstances have been lost. In a masterly return to the classical sources, Stacy Schiff here boldly separates fact from fiction to rescue the magnetic queen whose death ushered in a new world order. Rich in detail, epic in scope, Schiff 's is a luminous, deeply original reconstruction of a dazzling life.

Book excerpt: It is found at last that both the existence of Egypt itself, and its strange insulation in the midst of boundless tracts of dry and barren sand, depend upon certain remarkable results of the general laws of rain. The water which is taken up by the atmosphere from the surface of the sea and of the land by evaporation, falls again, under certain circumstances, in showers of rain, the frequency and copiousness of which vary very much in different portions of the earth. As a general principle, rains are much more frequent and abundant near the equator than in temperate climes, and they grow less and less so as we approach the poles. This might naturally have been expected; for, under the burning sun of the equator, the evaporation of water must necessarily go on with immensely greater rapidity than in the colder zones, and all the water which is taken up must, of course, again come down.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An air of mystcry surrounds Cleopatra. A record of her reign as queen of Egypt simply doesn't exist and we must piece together her story from fragments, artifacts, and historical writings. Was she a selfish, extravagant, and overly ambitious tyrant? Or was she a patriotic advocate for her people with the courage to stand up to those who held power in Rome? Cleopatra spent her reign fighting for her right to rule and struggling to maintain Egypt's independence. Love, power, and political advantage became intertwined as Cleopatra aligned herself with the dominant political figures of her time. These partnerships both helped and hurt her beloved Egypt. So who was Cleopatra? Her motives may be open to debate, but it cannot be denied that she was a savvy political mastermind, a powerful queen, and a force to be reckoned with - in any age.
