Book excerpt: This memoir of World War II, written by Edward C. Arn, an infantry captain who served in Company F, 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, takes readers on a wartime journey in the European Theater of Operations through a clear and honest account of combat from the viewpoint of a sensitive and acute "civilian in uniform." Arn entered combat and proved his worth in the hedgerows of Normandy, the Battle of Mortain, the push through northern France and the Netherlands, the Battle of the Bulge, the Ardennes Campaign, and the invasion of the German heartland to the Elbe River. During his sixteen months on the front lines, Arn underwent a transformation from an apprehensive novice into a battle-rested veteran. Arn writes in a straightforward and engaging manner that avoids false sentimentality or romanticism. Instead, he gives readers keen insights into the daily life of soldiers locked in gruesome events far beyond their experience and describes how it feels to be under fire, to suffer a wound, to agonize over the deaths of friends, to endure true suffering, to sacrifice, and to survive. Edited and annotated by Jerome Mushkat, this memoir is an exceptional account of a man who came of age during the World War II generation.

Book excerpt: This volume gathers in compact form the official historical records of field artillery units in the United States Army in order to perpetuate and publicize their traditions, honors, and heraldic entitlements. It includes the lineages and honors of Regular Army and Army Reserve field artillery commands, brigades, and groups, and corps and division artillery that have been active since 1965. It also includes the fifty-eight elements of each regiment that have been active since the inception of the Combat Arms Regimental System in 1957. This two-part second edition updates the lineages, honors, and heraldic items of the Regular Army's field artillery regiments and further expands them to include organizations above the regimental level, as well as Army National Guard units. All are current through September 1, 2003. This is the companion book of The Organizational History of Field Artillery, 1775-2003.

Book excerpt: This book presents the U.S. Army Asymmetric Warfare Group (AWG) as an example of successful change by the Army in wartime. It argues that creating the AWG required senior leaders to create a vision differing from the Army’s self-conceptualization, change bureaucratic processes to turn the vision into an actual unit, and then place the new unit in the hands of uniquely qualified leaders to build and sustain it. In doing this, it considers the forces influencing change within the Army and argues the two most significant are its self-conceptualization and institutional bureaucracy. The work explores three major subject areas that provide historical context. The first is the Army’s institutional history from the early 1950s through 2001. This period begins with the Army seeking to validate its place in America’s national security strategy and ends with the Army trying to chart a path into the post-Cold War future. The Army’s history is largely one of asymmetric warfare. The work thus examines several campaigns that offered lessons for subsequent wars. Some lessons the Army took to heart, others it ignored. As the AWG was a direct outgrowth of the failures and frustrations the Army experienced in Afghanistan and Iraq, the book examines these campaigns and identifies the specific problems that led senior Army leaders to create the AWG. Finally, the work chronicles the AWG’s creation in 2006, growth, and re-assignment from the Army staff to a fully-fledged organization subordinate to the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command in 2011 to its deactivation. This action resulted not from the unit’s failure to adapt to a post-insurgency Army focusing on modernization. Rather, it resulted from the Army failing to realize that while the AWG was a product of counterinsurgency, it provided the capability to support the Army during a period of great strategic and institutional uncertainty.

Book excerpt: Devil's Shield: Explosive tank battles on the plains surrounding the Holy city of Aachen, and gritty close-quarters fighting through its dirty, bombed-out streets. Surrounded by the might of the Big Red One, has the embattled SS Wotan, led by the unwavering von Dodenburg, finally met its match? This is the second in the fictional series The Dogs of War, by Leo Kessler. In the grey September of 1944, Colonel von Dodenburg's SS battle group Wotan became the Fuhrer's Fire Brigade, the crack unit of the German Wehrmacht, to be thrown into any battle as a last desperate measure to redress the balance. As the Allied armies closed in on Germany's Holy City of Aachen, even the most optimistic said that Hitler's war was lost. Only Colonel von Dodenburg's black uniformed troopers, with their dreaded silver death's head badge, were convinced that they could still save the day. Leo Kessler is the pseudonym of the late writer Charles Whiting. More than three million of his books have been sold worldwide.

Book excerpt: Few units in the U.S. Army can boast as proud a unit history as the Third Infantry Division; it fought on all of the Europe and North African fronts that American soldiers were engaged against the Axis forces during World War II. The 3rd Infantry Division saw combat in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Germany and Austria for 531 consecutive days. In this official division history written by the officers who served with the unit at the time serves as a fascinating memorial and a detailed history of the “Marne Division” during World War II. The 3rd Inf. Division made landfall in Fedala on the 8th November 1942 as part of Operation Torch during the Allied invasion of North Africa and was engaged in heavy fighting before the German and Italian troops were finally levered out of the continent. The division was back in the thick of the fighting in Sicily under the command of such famous leaders as Generals Lucien Truscott, Omar Bradley and George S. Patton. As part of General Mark Clark’s U.S. Fifth army it engaged in some of the bloodiest engagements of the Italian campaign at Salerno beaches, Volturno river, Monte Cassino and Anzio. Under their old division commander General Truscott they formed part of the force that landed in Southern France and battled into the heart of Germany before the eventual capitulation of the Nazi High command in 1945. Richly illustrated with maps and pictures throughout.
