Brigadier General Henry Heth had been ordered to Chattanooga to assume command of the Georgia regiments. The 34th fought throughout the war with the Army of Tennessee, surrendering in North Carolina. Book excerpt: The South Carolina 19th Infantry Regiment was organized during the winter of 1861-1862. It, along with the 18th was created as the last of the units formed in 1861 and did not participate in the early deployment. The 19th was involved the reorganization of the troops in the spring of 1862. They then moved to Mississippi, then to Kentucky where it saw action at Munfordsville. The 19th served with the Army of Tennessee from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, fought with Hood in Tennessee, and was active in the South Carolina Campaign and the North Carolina operations. The regiment lost 8 killed and 72 wounded at Murfreesboro, and the 10th/19th sustained 236 casualties at Chickamauga and totaled 436 men and 293 arms in December, 1863. During the Atlanta Campaign, July 22-28, the 19th reported 12 killed, 60 wounded, and 25 missing, and there were 9 killed, 34 wounded, and 8 missing at Ezra Church. It surrendered on April 26, 1865, with 76 men.

Book excerpt: The North Carolina 7th Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Mason, near Graham, North Carolina, in August 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Iredell, Alexander, Cabarrus, Rowan, New Hanover, Mecklenburg, Nash, and Wake. The unit took an active part in the fight at New Bern, and then advanced to Virginia. It was assigned to General Branch's, Law's, and Lane's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. After fighting at Hanover Court House, it participated in the various campaigns of the army from the Seven Days Battles to Cold Harbor, and then was involved in the Siege of Petersburg south and north of the James River. The regiment sustained 51 casualties at New Bern, 253 out of the 450 engaged during the Seven Days Battles, 69 at Second Manassas and Ox Hill, 52 at Sharpsburg, and 86 at Fredericksburg. There were 37 killed and 127 wounded at Chancellorsville, and of the 291 in action at Gettysburg, thirty-one percent were disabled. It lost 5 killed, 62 wounded, and 37 missing at the Wilderness, and 11 killed and 28 wounded at Spotsylvania. On February 26, 1865, the unit was ordered to North Carolina where it surrendered with the Army of Tennessee with 13 officers and 139 men. A detachment surrendered at Appomattox with 1 officer and 18 men.

It was sent to Tupelo, MS, and was placed with the 24th and 28th Alabama regiments, and two South Carolina regiments, in General Arthur M. Manigault's Brigade, General Jones M. Wither's Division. It was with the main Army of Tennessee when it fought at Murfreesboro, and it sustained heavy casualties (11 killed and 77 wounded). At Chickamauga, the 34th again lost heavily, and at Missionary Ridge, a large number were captured. It continued throughout the war with the Army of Tennessee, participating in the Atlanta Campaign and the Carolinas Campaign. Just before the surrender, it was consolidated with the 28th and 34th Alabama regiments, with J. C. Carter of Montgomery as Colonel, Starke H. Oliver of Mobile as Lt. Col., and P. G. Wood of Dallas as Major. At the time of the surrender, near High Point, North Carolina, it was in Sharp's Brigade, D. H. Hill's Division, Stephen D. Lee's Corps, and numbered about 125 men. The men were recruited in the counties of Davidson, Rowan, Stanly, Davie, and Mecklenburg. The 42nd followed an unusual path through the war. They missed the early battles in Virginia and Getttysburg, then were in Virginia for the later battles of 1863 and 1864, but returned to North Carolina and surrendered with the Army of Tennessee.In June, 1862 it moved to Lynchburg, Virginia, and guarded prisoners captured in Jackson's Valley Campaign. Later the unit served in North Carolina at Tarboro, along the Chowan River, and at Wilmington. Assigned to General Martin's and Kirkland's Brigade, it fought at Cold Harbor, took its place in the Petersburg trenches, and ended the war with the Army of Tennessee.The regiment arrived at Bentonville on 18 March, and spent the night without fires and under orders to remain quiet. Company K consisted of 4 officers, the First Sergeant and 24 privates (numbers approximate) On 19 March, the 42nd NCT, as part of the brigade, covered the deployment of the Johnson's army at Bentonville. Returning to the division line of battle, near the center of the Confederate position, the brigade helped repulse the early Federal attacks, and participated in the Confederate assault on the Morgan's division of the XIV Corps. On 20 March, Kirkland's Brigade successfully defended from its hasty entrenchments on the division's right (just south of the "Devil's Racepath"), then withdrew with the army to the north on 22 March. Company K, 42nd NCT reported no losses at Bentonville. The brigade passed through Raleigh on 11 April, Durham on 13 April, marching on through Chapel Hill west toward High Point. By 26 April, the 42nd NCT was with Kirkland's Brigade at Center Church in Randolph County, three miles from High Point, where it was disbanded on 2 May.Company "A"-Capt. Jacob H. It surrendered with 4 officers and 53 men in April, 1865.
