Book excerpt: The Michigan 23rd Infantry Regiment fought the entire war in the west, beginning in the summer of 1862. They missed the siege of Nashville while pursuing Confederate troops in Tennessee and Kentucky and they also missed the Battle of Chickamauga while involved in follow-up operations at Knoxville. The regiment participated in the Atlanta Campaign followed by Franklin and Nashville, and then participated in Sherman's Carolina Campaign and the final battles at Bentonville and Averasboro. For some unknown reason, they did not participate in the Grand Review in Washington, but were mustered out in late May, 1865 and returned home by rail. With a total enrollment of 1,417, the 23rd had 41 men killed in action, 8 died of wounds and 228 of disease for a total casualty rate of 20%. Book excerpt: The 7th Michigan Infantry was organized at Monroe, Michigan and mustered into Federal service for a three-year enlistment on August 22, 1861. Among the ranks was future brigadier general Henry Baxter, who was captain of Company C. The 7th was assigned to the Army of the Potomac soon after it was formed and served in the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 2nd Corps, for the duration of the war. Sister regiments in the 3rd Brigade included the 19th Massachusetts, 20th Massachusetts, 42nd New York, and 59th New York. Infantryman William Rufus Shafter was wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks; he later received the Medal of Honor for heroism during the battle. The 7th was one of the first regiments to cross the Rappahannock River on Dec. 11th, 1862 while under fire from Confederate sharpshooters hidden in the buildings of Fredericksburg, the first opposed riverine assault in American military history. In July 1862, Norman J. Hall, a Regular Army artilleryman assumed command of the regiment and led it until he was promoted to brigade command before the Battle of Gettysburg. The regiment was mustered out on July 5, 1865.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 6th Michigan Volunteer Infantry first deployed to Baltimore, where the soldiers' exemplary demeanor charmed a mainly secessionist population. Their subsequent service along the Mississippi River was a perfect storm of epidemic disease, logistical failures, guerrilla warfare, profiteering, martinet West Pointers and scheming field officers, along with the doldrums of camp life punctuated by bloody battles. The Michiganders responded with alcoholism, insubordination and depredations. Yet they saved the Union right at Baton Rouge and executed suicidal charges at Port Hudson. This first modern history of the controversial regiment concludes with a statistical analysis, a roster and a brief summary of its service following conversion to heavy artillery.

Book excerpt: The 6th Michigan Cavalry was organized at Grand Rapids, Michigan, from May 28 to October 13, 1862, and mustered in October 13, 1862. Among the officers who later joined the regiment as replacements were Thomas W. Custer, who would earn two Medals of Honor while serving with the 6th in the spring of 1865. The regiment was assigned to the Michigan Brigade during the early part of the Gettysburg Campaign in June 1863. It saw its first actions under General Custer at the Hanover, Hunterstown, and Gettysburg. Armed with Spencer Repeating Rifles, the 6th provided superior firepower against the lightly armed Confederate cavalry. Sent out to the Old West frontier following the cessation of hostilities in mid-1865, the 6th, commanded by Colonel James H. Kidd and under the overall command of Brigadier General Patrick Connor constructed "Fort Connor" as a supply depot during the Powder River Expeditions of that summer. A detachment of the regiment guarding James A. Sawyers wagon train participated in the Sawyers Fight of August and September, 1865. The regiment was mustered out of service on November 24, 1865. The regiment suffered 7 officers and 128 enlisted men killed in action or mortally wounded and 251 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 386 fatalities.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Formation, Movements, Camps, Scouts and Battles of the Tenth Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry: Containing a Short Historical Sketch of Every Officer, Connected With the Regiment A history of the events of our lives, which are fraught with importance either to ourselves or to others, is always interesting as well as useful. And, as our country is engaged in a struggle such as modern history nowhere records, a memoranda of the part we have played in the great drama cannot fail to be of interest to ourselves in years to come, when, in imagination, we can live over again Th' exciting scenes, as we look back, Of camp, or macrh, or bivouack, Or fiercely 'gainst the rebels strive, To keep our nation's strength alive; And it will be of no little interest to our friends to see through what scenes we have passed, and trace out our long and tedious marches, and hear of the hardships we have endured for their sakes, and our country's honor and right. On account of the data it contains, we hope this history may prove interesting to those who have taken part in the scenes it seeks to represent. As to its correctness, we would say that we have spared no pains to procure the most correct data which could be obtained, relying upon regimental and company records and daily journals kept during the whole time. We have endeavored to avoid all coloring of events, seeking a medium between the exaggeration of some and the eccentricities of others. Our aim has been to give a plain, truthful statement of facts as they occurred. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
