Book excerpt: The 8th Alabama Infantry Regiment was the first Alabama command that enlisted "for the war." It was organized by the War Department at Richmond on 10 June 1861, with men recruited from Butler, Coosa, Dallas, Mobile, and Perry counties. The regiment lay at Yorktown, Virginia, for the first eleven months of its service, and a detachment of it was engaged in a skirmish near Wynn's Mill. Placed in General Roger Pryor's Brigade, the regiment fell back with the army until it was overtaken at Williamsburg and lost about 100 men. It continued throughout the war in Virginia. At Appomattox, the remnant denied the first rumors of surrender and indignantly tore their battle-flag into shreds to retain as mementos. Of 1377 men on its roll, the 8th lost 300 killed or mortally wounded, over 170 died of disease, and 236 were discharged or transferred; 16 officers and 153 men surrendered. Book excerpt: The Alabama 8th (Hatch's) Cavalry Regiment was organized at Newbern, Alabama, in April, 1864, by adding one company to the nine of Hatch's Battalion that had entered Confederate service the previous winter. The men were form Sumter, Dallas, Tuscaloosa, Greene, Marengo, Choctaw, and Fayette counties. It joined General Pillow at Blue Mountain, then was assigned to C. G. Armistead's Brigade, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The 8th moved into north Georgia and was engaged in the desperate encounter at Lafayette, with a loss of 30 killed and wounded and about 75 prisoners. Shortly after, the Eighth fought at Rome, losing about 20 men killed and wounded. It was ordered to west Florida soon after, and was in front of Steele as he moved on Pollard. In December, on receiving news of a Federal expedition from Pensacola to Pollard, Ala., Colonel Armistead moved his brigade to Bluff Springs, a march of 150 miles in fifty-four hours, and pursued the expedition on its return, December 16-17, General McKean, commanding at Pensacola, reported that "considerable severe fighting took place at all the streams from the Little Escambia to Pine Barren Creek." Colonel Robinson, commanding the expedition, was severely wounded, and in his troops 17 killed and 64 wounded. The 8th surrendered at Gainesville, Florida in late May, 1865. It then proceeded to Tullahoma, and was there placed in the brigade of Gen. Clayton of Barbour, with the Eighteenth, Thirty-sixth, and Fifty-eighth of Alabama regiments. The regiment was first under fire with slight loss at Hoover's Gap, and lost nearly half the regiment killed and wounded at Chickamauga. At Missionary Ridge the Thirty-eighth was again hotly engaged at close quarters, and a large number were captured. It wintered at Dalton, and bore its share in the operations of the Dalton-Atlanta campaign, losing severely, particularly at Resaca and Atlanta. From Marietta to the close, Gen. Holtzclaw of Montgomery commanded the brigade. It fought around the latter city, and at Jonesboro. During the Tennessee campaign of Gen. Hood, the regiment felt the blight of the December frost at Nashville, and was in the rear of the retreat. Placed in the defenses at Mobile, the regiment went through the fiery ordeal at Spanish Fort, where it again suffered severely. With the army, it was surrendered at Meridian, Mississippi, about 80 strong.

The regiment was ordered to Chattanooga in November, and then a month later, was sent to Bowling Green. The remainder of Gen. Bragg's forces were ordered out of Florida on 27 FEB 1862. Gen. Bragg joined up with Gen. Beauregard's forces in Jackson, Tennessee. The 7th was in a temporary brigade under Col. S. A. M. Wood, and it was included in the Army of Tennessee around Corinth. The time of service of most of the companies expired after 12 months during the first week in April, 1862, and the regiment disbanded. However, the two mounted companies from Autauga and Lauderdale retained their organization and fought at Shiloh, as did other men from the regiment. The mounted companies became part of the 3rd Alabama Cavalry following Shiloh and the majority of the remaining men and officers joined other organizations. Book excerpt: The 31st Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Talladega, 16 March 1862, with men from Calhoun, Cherokee, Montgomery, Randolph, Shelby, and Talladega counties. It reported to General Danville Leadbetter at Chattanooga shortly after. It then moved up to Knoxville, where it was brigaded under General Seth Barton, in Carter Stevenson's Division. After the Kentucky Campaign, the 31st was permanently brigaded with the 20th, 23rd, 30th, and 46th Alabama regiments, under General Edward D. Tracy of Madison, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. In December, the 31st accompanied Stevenson's Division to Vicksburg. There were 260 effectives in January, 1863, with 21 killed and 37 wounded at Vicksburg. Following parole at Vicksburg, the 31st continued throughout the remainder of the war with the Army of Tennessee. There were 23 casualties at Chattanooga, and in December, 1863, there were 452 present with 323 arms. Only 180 were fit for duty in January 1865, and less than 100 surrendered in April. Toward the close of the war, the 31st was consolidated with the 23rd and 46th Infantry and redesignated the 23rd Consolidated Infantry Regiment at Smithfield, 9 April 1865. There is some confusion regarding the origin of the regiment. Some accounts show the 29th was created by the addition of two companies to the Fourth Alabama Battalion - a body of eight companies, which had been organized the autumn before at Montgomery. Book excerpt: The 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Auburn, in the spring of 1862, under the requisition of President Jefferson Davis for 12,000 more Alabamians Ordered to Columbus, MS, after a short time, the regiment proceeded to Tupelo. There it was placed in General Henry Little's Division, and in the Brigade of Col. Martin of TN, with three Mississippi regiments. General Dabney Herndon Maury succeeded General Little when the latter was killed at Iuka, where the 37th was first engaged, with some loss. After Corinth the 37th was placed into a brigade with the 2nd TX, and 42nd AL, General John C. Moore commanding. The 37th lost heavily at Lookout Mountain and quite a number at Mission Ridge. The winter passed at Dalton, GA, where General Alpheus Baker of Barbour took charge of the brigade. The regiment was then engaged at Chattanooga (73 casualties out of 407 men present), Resaca, Noonday Creek, Kennesaw, and the battles around Atlanta. In one charge at Atlanta, 22 July, the regimental commander and 40 men were killed outright, out of 300 men present. During the fall and winter, the 37th was on garrison duty at Spanish Fort, then moved into North Carolina. The 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Consolidated, was organized on 9 April 1865 by combining the original 37th Alabama with the 42nd and 54th Alabama regiments, at Smithfield, NC. It broke the enemy line at Bentonville, and furled its colors a few days later, with 300 of its number present out of the 1100 who took the field originally. . Book excerpt: The Alabama 49th Infantry regiment was originally mustered into service as the 31st (Hale's) Alabama Infantry, but its designation was changed in the spring of 1863. It is also called the 52nd Alabama Regiment. The 49th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Nashville, in January 1862 and attached to the Kentucky Brigade of General John C. Breckinridge. It took part in the Battle of Shiloh where it lost 113 killed and wounded. A few weeks later, the unit was reorganized as the 49th Regiment on 8 May 1862 and was sent to Vicksburg, with Breckinridge's Brigade, and was engaged in the defense of the place when it was bombarded in 1862. The 49th participated in the Dalton-Atlanta Campaign, doing much arduous service, but losing inconsiderably. Around Atlanta, it was again fully engaged and suffered severely. Following the fall of Atlanta, Hood led his army to Tennessee in a vain attempt to cut off Sherman's supply lines. The 49th participated in the movement into Tennessee, and at Franklin and Nashville, its losses were again large. Transferred to the Carolinas, the 49th took part in the operations there. Book excerpt: The Alabama 54th Infantry Regiment was made up of six Alabama companies of the First Alabama-Mississippi-Tennessee Regiment of Col. Baker of Barbour, and four Alabama companies of the regiment of Col. L. M. Walker of Tennessee. These companies had been captured at Island Ten, after nearly a year's arduous service above Memphis. Organized at Jackson, Miss, October 1862, the Fifty-fourth operated in the vicinity of Vicksburg during the winter. It fought at Fort Pemberton with light loss, and at Baker's Creek with equal result. Having escaped Vicksburg by moving with Gen. Loring from Baker's Creek, the Fifty-fourth was soon after at the siege of Jackson. It was then transferred to the army of Gen. Bragg. The regiment wintered at Dalton, and was engaged in the campaign from there to Atlanta, when the Army of Tennessee disputed the ground inch by inch, and stained those inches with blood. The regiment lost severely at Resaca, and at Atlanta July 22. The loss was very heavy at Atlanta July 28, more than half the regiment being killed and wounded, and the flag perforated by forty bullets. Having moved with Hood into middle Tennessee, the Fifty-fourth shared the privations and disasters of that campaign. Transferred to North Carolina, its colors waved defiantly at Bentonville, its last battlefield. A remnant only were surrendered with the forces of Gen. Johnston. Book excerpt: The 35th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Lagrange, 12 March 1862, with about 750 men. Ordered to Corinth, it was there brigaded under General John C. Breckinridge. It then went to Louisiana and took part in the attack on Baton Rouge, losing 4 killed and 21 wounded. It was part of the force with which General Earl Van Dorn assaulted Corinth; casualties were heavy. Placed under General James Buford, the regiment was under fire at the first bombardment of Port Hudson. It passed some time in that vicinity, and in May 1863, the regiment was engaged at Baker's Creek with light loss. The 35th participated in the Atlanta Campaign where it lost 65 killed and wounded on 22 July at Atlanta, and 27 killed and wounded on the 28th. The regiment moved into Tennessee with General John Bell Hood and was in the advance in the attack on the outpost at Decatur, where it lost 35 killed and wounded. At the Battle of Franklin, the 35th lost 150 killed and wounded, one half of its effective force. The loss at Nashville was light, and the remnant of the regiment proceeded eastward to renew their struggle in the Carolinas. Book excerpt: The 19th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Huntsville, 14 August 1861, It was ordered to Mobile immediately and remained there about three months, then was at Pensacola for two weeks. Ordered to Corinth, the 19th was brigaded under General Gladden of Louisiana, with the 22nd, 25th, and 50th regiments, and after Shiloh, the 17th Battalion, Sharpshooters, and the 39th regiment. There were few casualties at Missionary Ridge, and the 19th wintered at Dalton. In the almost incessant fighting from there to Atlanta, the regiment lost heavily in casualties, particularly at new Hope and near Marietta. The brigade, under the command of General Johnston of Perry, the 19th was badly cut up in the battles at Atlanta on 22 and 28 July. Losses were slight at Jonesboro. At the Battle of Franklin, the 19th lost only a few to battle wounds, but many were captured. It went to North Carolina and was engaged at Kinston and Bentonville, losing heavily in the latter affair. Then consolidated with the 40th and 46th Alabama regiments at Salisbury (with M. L. Book excerpt: The Alabama 50th Infantry Regiment was organized at Corinth, Mississippi, in March, 1862, by consolidating the 2nd and 5th (Golladay's) Alabama Infantry Battalions which were recently recruited. Originally mustered into Confederate service as the 26th (Coltart's) Regiment, its designation was changed to 50th in June, 1863. The men were raised in the counties of Calhoun, Jackson, Lauderdale, Blount, Limestone, Walker, Fayette, and Tuscaloosa. Ordered to Tennessee, It was in the battle of Bridge Creek, May 28, 1862, with a loss of 2 killed. The unit fought at Shiloh with 440 effectives, but because of casualties, sickness, and exhaustion, the number was fewer than 150 by the 2nd day. It saw light action in KY, and was then placed in Deas', G. D. Johnston's, and Brantley's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. The Gardner's (Deas') Brigade consisted of the 17th Sharpshooter Battalion, plus the 19th, 22nd, 25th, 39th, and 50th Alabama Infantry Regiments. The 50th fought with conspicuous gallantry at Murfreesboro, winning the commendation of its division commander, General Withers, and losing 80 men in killed and wounded. It spent the remainder of the winter at Tullahoma; was for a time consolidated with the Thirty-ninth, under command of Col. H. D. Clayton, and in July it was numbered the Fiftieth, and was alternately commanded by Col. J. G. Coltart and Lieut. Col. N. N. Clements. At Chickamauga it lost 100 men, out of 500 engaged, and it also lost heavily at Missionary Ridge. The 59th totaled 289 men and 180 arms in Dec, 63. It wintered at Dalton, and did arduous duty on the retreat to Atlanta, being engaged nearly every day, and losing heavily in the bloody battles around Atlanta during the last week of July, 1864 where it sustained 33 casualties. The regiment moved into Tennessee with Hood, and was badly mutilated at Franklin. It then proceeded to the Carolinas and distinguished itself at Kinston, where a line of skirmishers, 40 strong, under Capt. E. B. Vaughan, captured a stand of colors and 300 men of the Fifteenth Connecticut. After April 9th, it was consolidated with the Twenty-second, Twenty-fifth and Thirty ninth, under Col. Harry T. Toulmin. Few survived to surrender in April, 65. Book excerpt: The 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment was formed at Tuscumbia in December, 1861, using the 7-company 3rd AL Infantry Battalion as a nucleus. Men were recruited from Fayette, Marion, Tuscaloosa, Walker, and Winston counties. Two companies under Major J. S. Garvin were soon ordered to Ft. Donelson and captured in that fight on 16 February 1862. After being exchanged, they joined the regiment in Virginia. It was in General Gabriel James Rains' Brigade at Yorktown, under fire but with few casualties. After moving up to Richmond from Williamsburg, the regiment was assigned to Rodes', O'Neal's, and Battle's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. Because of heavy losses in Virginia, the regiment was sent home after Gettysburg, then assigned as prison guards at Andersonville. In June of 1864, the 26th was attached to Brig. General James Cantey's Brigade and fought with the Army of Tennessee from Atlanta to Bentonville. It moved with General John Bell Hood into Tennessee where it was badly hurt at Nashville. In November, it moved to Pensacola and was present at the bombardment there that month and again in January. In March 1862, the regiment was sent to western Tennessee where it was brigaded under J. K. Jackson of Georgia, with the 18th, 21st, and 24th Alabama regiments. The 17th had its full share of the campaigning from Dalton to Jonesboro, fighting almost daily, especially at Cassville, New Hope, Kennesaw, Lost Mountain, and Atlanta. In the battle of Peachtree Creek, it lost 130 k and w, and on the 28th of July, 180 k and w. The entire loss from Resaca to Lovejoy's Station was 586, but few of whom were captured. The regiment moved into Tennessee with General John Bell Hood and lost two-thirds of its force at Franklin; a number of the remainder were captured at Nashville. A remnant moved into North Carolina and a part fought at Bentonville. It was then consolidated with the 29th and 33rd Alabama regiments, with E. P. Holcombe of Lowndes as colonel, J. F. Tate of Russell as lieutenant colonel, and Willis J. Milner of Butler as major. The regiment surrendered at Greensboro, NC, in April, 1865.
