Download or read book Historical Perspectives on the Entrepreneur written by Robert F. Hébert and published by Now Publishers Inc. This book was released on 2006 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical Perspectives on the Entrepreneur preserves a vital historical perspective by chronologically tracing the entrepreneur in the economic literature to give a complete perspective to contemporary writings and teachings on entrepreneurship. It reviews the historical nature and role of the entrepreneur as described and analyzed in economic literature from the eighteenth century to the present. Historical Perspectives on the Entrepreneur shows how Joseph Schumpeter changed the ambiguous nature of a concept of the entrepreneur to that which now occupies a primary role in the theory of economic development. It also examines other conceptions of entrepreneurship besides Schumpeter's including the many different facets of entrepreneurship as they have been perceived by some of the great economists throughout the ages. Finally, it illustrates the tension that often exists between "theory" and "practice." Historical Perspectives on the Entrepreneur should be required reading for all students of economics and those interested in entrepreneurship practice.
Book Synopsis A History of Entrepreneurship by : Robert F Hébert
Download or read book A History of Entrepreneurship written by Robert F Hébert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-05-18 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book establishes a chronological trace of the entrepreneur as treated in economic literature in order to give a more wholesome perspective to contemporary writings and teachings on entrepreneurship. It focuses on the nature and role of the entrepreneur, and of entrepreneurship, as revealed in economic literature as early as the eighteenth century, when Richard Cantillon first coined the term 'entrepreneur'. The authors then trace how Joseph Schumpeter's perspective, among other’s, on entrepreneurship came to dominate the world's understanding of the term. Due to Schumpeter’s dominant influence, entrepreneurship has come to occupy a primary role in the theory of economic development. In this book Hébert and Link discuss various key topics including the German Tradition, the Austrian and the English School of thought as well as individuals such as Alfred Marshall and Jeremy Bentham. The historical survey also illustrates the tension that often exists between "theory" and "practice" and how it has been difficult for economic theory to assimilate a core concept that plays a vital role in social and economic change. Finally, the book exposes the many different facets of entrepreneurship as they have been perceived by some of the great economists throughout the ages.

Book Synopsis A Brief History of Entrepreneurship by : Joe Carlen
Download or read book A Brief History of Entrepreneurship written by Joe Carlen and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brief History of Entrepreneurship charts how the pursuit of profit by private individuals has been a prime mover in revolutionizing civilization. Entrepreneurs often butt up against processes, technologies, social conventions, and even laws. So they circumvent, innovate, and violate to obtain what they want. This creative destruction has brought about overland and overseas trade, colonization, and a host of revolutionary technologies—from caffeinated beverages to the personal computer—that have transformed society. Consulting rich archival sources, including some that have never before been translated, Carlen maps the course of human history through nine episodes when entrepreneurship reshaped our world. Highlighting the most colorful characters of each era, he discusses Mesopotamian merchants' creation of the urban market economy; Phoenician merchant-sailors intercontinental trade, which came to connect Africa, Asia, and Europe; Chinese tea traders' invention of paper money; the colonization of the Americas; and the current "flattening" of the world's economic playing field. Yet the pursuit of profit hasn't always moved us forward. From slavery to organized crime, Carlen explores how entrepreneurship can sometimes work at the expense of others. He also discusses the new entrepreneurs who, through the nascent space tourism industry, are leading humanity to a multiplanetary future. By exploring all sides of this legacy, Carlen brings much-needed detail to the role of entrepreneurship in revolutionizing civilization.

Book Synopsis Entrepreneurship and Japanese Industrialization in Historical Perspective by : John P. Tang
Download or read book Entrepreneurship and Japanese Industrialization in Historical Perspective written by John P. Tang and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Studies of entrepreneurship in nineteenth century Japan typically focus on the activities of leading industrialists who founded large, family-owned conglomerates known as zaibatsu. These individuals do not conform well with the archetypal Schumpeterian entrepreneur, but this discrepancy may be more an issue of context than behavior. However, due to a lack of documentation for smaller independent firms, it is difficult to make this comparison. To broaden the scope of analysis, I use data drawn from corporate genealogies, which provide a more complete cross-section of entrepreneurial activity. This dataset of firm entry during the Meiji Period (1868-1912) covers a wide range of industries, allowing me to analyze aspects of Japan's early industrialization that heretofore have relied on anecdotal or case evidence. I also propose a game-theoretic model of entry appropriate for entrepreneurs in late developing economies that exploit the qualitative nature of these data"--Abstract page.

Book Synopsis Female Entrepreneurs in the Long Nineteenth Century by : Jennifer Aston
Download or read book Female Entrepreneurs in the Long Nineteenth Century written by Jennifer Aston and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume challenges those who see gender inequalities invariably defining and constraining the lives of women. But it also broadens the conversation about the degree to which business is a gender-blind institution, owned and managed by entrepreneurs whose gender identities shape and reflect economic and cultural change." – Mary A. Yeager, Professor Emerita, University of California, Los Angeles This is the first book to consider nineteenth-century businesswomen from a global perspective, moving beyond European and trans-Atlantic frameworks to include many other corners of the world. The women in these pages, who made money and business decisions for themselves rather than as employees, ran a wide variety of enterprises, from micro-businesses in the ‘grey market’ to large factories with international reach. They included publicans and farmers, midwives and property developers, milliners and plumbers, pirates and shopkeepers. Female Entrepreneurs in the Long Nineteenth Century: A Global Perspective rejects the notion that nineteenth-century women were restricted to the home. Despite a variety of legal and structural restrictions, they found ways to make important but largely unrecognised contributions to economies around the world - many in business. Their impact on the economy and the economy’s impact on them challenge gender historians to think more about business and business historians to think more about gender and create a global history that is inclusive of multiple perspectives. Book Synopsis What is entrepreneurship? - Historical approach and critical disscusion by : Stefanie Drescher
Download or read book What is entrepreneurship? - Historical approach and critical disscusion written by Stefanie Drescher and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2007-11-05 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2,0, University of Aberdeen, language: English, abstract: Executive Summary Entrepreneurs are doubtlessly not like other people. They differ possibly by personal attributes, family background or gained experiences in their private or professional life. Not everyone has it in oneself to be an entrepreneur. The majority of start-ups worldwide need to declare bankruptcy after a short time. The art here is to assure the survival of the business and to guarantee its expanding. There are various theories trying to explain why some people can make it and others do not. Is it due to the education? Or is the individual’s character and temperament the crucial factor? Another question in this context is, if it is possible to become a successful entrepreneur or if entrepreneurs have some inherent qualities or talents that others never will have. The role of the entrepreneur in society has changed in recent years. He has improved his international standing; people recognise his creative innovations that simplify our lives, boosting the economy through self-exertion and adding new jobs. Harrell (1992) summarises that “If it were not for the entrepreneurs, we would be in a depression that would make 1929 seem like a boom“. The German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (2002) supports this point of view. “Entrepreneurs...facilitate productive change and vitalize competition and hence most cities support them.”
