Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Essays Between these two, as I hope, fairly solid masses at each end, I have ventured to throw in a few slighter pieces from the Saturday Review, a few out of many contributed to that paper from its beginning to the year 1878. I put them forth as a kind of experiment, hardly knowing whether they are really worth preserving as separate pieces; I have used several already as notes to longer essays in other volumes. No one will look for full treatment of any sub ject on so small a scale; but it has sometimes struck me that a short paper of that kind now and then brings out a particular thought or point of view more forcibly than a longer one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Essay and the Critical Review: Some Suggestions as to Their Preparation, With Examples Taken From American History The critic is not a base caviler, but the younger brother of genius. Next to invention is the power of interpreting invention: next to beauty the power of appreciating beauty - Margaret Fuller. Several times during the year the student will be called upon to prepare a paper on some historical book. If one is going to pass an honest judg ment on a work it is clear that the first duty is carefully and thoroughly to read it, taking note of its important features. The author may expect this consideration from the reviewer, for a book is the fruit of toil and thought The great Petrarch, in speaking of his letters, puts the author's case: I desire, he says, that my reader, whoever he may he, should think of me alone, not of his daughter's wedding, his mistress's embraces, the wiles of his enemy, his engagements, horse, lands or money. I want him to pay attention to me. If his affairs are pressing, let him postpone reading the letter, but when he does read, let him throw aside the burden of business and family cares, and fix his mind upon the matter before him. I do not wish him to carry on his business and attend to my letter at the same time. I will not have him gain without any exertion what has not been produced without labor on my part. After careful reading, with his notes arranged in order, the reviewer begins upon his composition. In such a piece of writing it is obviously well to intrigue the attention of the prospective reader at the start by some remarks of general introduction, to lead him from concerns of his own day's routine into a mood in which he can appreciate the essay which is to be set before him. Since the book is the product of a certain human mind and inevitably bears the marks of its creator's strength or weakness, it is also desirable to discover and to state the bare facts, of the author's life and the efiect which his environment and the circumstances of his career were bound to have upon his views and his work. What merits, if any, have been ascribed to his work in general? What experience or preparation qualified him to undertake the task in hand? Exactly when and under what conditions was it written? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Historical Essays, Contributed to the Edinburgh Review, Vol. 5 of 5 Miss Burney did for the English novel what Jeremy Collier did for the English drama; and she did it in a better way. She first showed that a tale might be written in which both the fashionable and the vulgar life of London might be exhibited with great force, and with broad comic humour, and which yet should not contain a single line inconsistent with rigid morality, or even with virgin delicacy. She took away the reproach which lay on a most useful and delightful species of composition. She vindicated the right of her sex to an equal share in a fair and noble province of letters. Several aecom plished women have followed in her track. At present, the povels which we owe to English ladies form no small part of the literary glory of our country. No class of works is more honourably distinguished by fine observation, by grace, by delicate wit, by pure moral feeling. Several among the s cessors of Madame d'arblay have equalled her; two, we think, have surpassed her. But the fact that she has been surpassed gives her an additional claim to our respect and gram; for, in truth we owe to her not only Evelina, Cc cilia and Camilla, but also Mansfield Park and the Absentee. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Historical Essays, Contributed to the Edinburgh Review, Vol. 3 of 5 We return our hearty thanks to Mr. Montagu for this truly valuable work. From the opinions which he expresses as a biographer we often dissent. But about his merit as a collector of the materials out of which opinions are formed, there can be no dispute; and we readily acknowledge that we are in a great measure indebted to his minute and accurate researches for the means of refuting what we cannot but consider as his errors. The labour which has been bestowed on this volume has been a labour of love. The writer is evidently enamoured of the subject. It fills his heart. It constantly overflows from his lips and his pen. Those who are acquainted with the Courts in which Mr. Montagu practises with so much ability and success well know how often he enlivens the discussion of a point of law by citing some weighty aphorism, or some brilliant illustration, from the De Augmentis or the Novum Organum. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Historical Essays Contributed to the Edinburgh Review, Vol. 3 of 3 In some respects Mr. Leigh Hunt is excellently qualified for the task which he has now undertaken. His style, in spite of its mannerism, nay, partly by reason of its mannerism, is well suited for light, garrulous, desultory aria, half critical, half bio graphical. We do not always agree with his literary judgments; but we find in him whatis very rare in our time, the power of justly appreciating and heartily enjoying good things of very difi'erent kinds. He can adore Shakspeare and Spenser without denying poetical genius to the author of Alexander' s Feast, or fine observation, rich fancy, and exquisite humour to him who imagined Will Honeycomb and Sir Roger de Coverley. He has paid particular attention to the history of the English drama, from the age of Elizabeth down to our own time, and has every right to be heard with respect on that subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reviews and Critical Essays The subject of the following brief memoir always seemed to me one of the most intellectually gifted men I have ever met. His memory was extraordinary, and his power of mastering masses of facts and drawing conclusions from them was equally remarkable. His experience of life, drawn from the observation of persons and events in Europe, was ever at hand to form his judgment. It was this happy faculty of recalling pictures of events in bygone times and in far-off countries which gave his conversation its peculiar charm, which all who conversed with him were ready to acknowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collectanea Essays, Addresses and Reviews "If I were asked what is my reason for printing these lectures, I might be at a loss for an answer. They are not printed by request, or because they seem to me worthy to be preserved, or because they are likely to be useful reading, or because they supply a want It may be that they owe their present form to the fact that the love of correcting proof-sheets has become a leading passion with the author." While the republication of batches of short stories, or the letters of special correspondents, is quite the fashion, and that of collected poems is treated with indulgence as a harmless foible, to venture to offer to the public a crambe repetita of lectures or addresses, dissertations or reviews, is generally considered an impertinence, discouraged by publishers, resented by reviewers, and tending only to the accumulation on the dealers' shelves of unmerchantable remainders. Such a proceeding seems always to require an apology; and perhaps the present writer can scarcely do better than transcribe, and subscribe to, the ingenuous confession, quoted above, of an extremely learned prelate, prefixed to a collection of academical lectures, delivered, as he explains, with repugnance and not re-issued without remorse.
