Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Collections of the State of Pennsylvania The proverb says Charity begins at home. The study of history ought to begin at home also yet how many men are there in this state, as in others, who are far more familiar with the history of England, or with the career of Alexander, Caesar, or Napoleon, than with the events that have occurred upon the very fields which they themselves are tilling And this arises not so much from the want of intelligence On the part of the people, as from the lack of proper books and documents within their reach. It is believed, therefore, that a Work of the kind here pre sented is needed by the intelligent yeomanry of the state, for whose use it is especially intended and the compiler hopes that, while it may serve to enliven their long winter evenings, it will awaken in their minds a spirit of inquiry into the history of their own immediate neighborhoods, and at the same time furnish them with a fund of instructive incidents relating to the more dis tant sections of the state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to Depositories of Manuscript Collections in Pennsylvania Interest was aroused in the task which the Historical Records Survey had undertaken, and, in December, 1936, the Committee on Historical Source Materials, American Historical Association, discussed with the Director Of the nation-wide Survey project the question Of bringing the manuscript resources Of this country under control. On the basis of this discussion the manuscripts survey began to assume definitive form, and general terms were abandoned. T 0 this time emphasis - had been placed upon the inventories Of county archives. This work had been under way for some months and the time had arrived to consider the procedure to be taken in the field Of non-archival materials. Supplement 6 to the Manual was issued. This Supplement restated the aims of the Survey in specific terms and the steps we expected to take to bring the manuscript resources (as distinct from public records) under control. The Guide to Depositories of Manuscript Collections in the United States will be published in a series Of fifty volumes, one for each state and the District Of Columbia, regardless Of the number Of depositories; an index will be included in each volume, and the fiftieth book will be an index to the series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Collections Relating to Gwynedd: A Township of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, Settled, 1696, by Immigrants From Wales, With Some Data Referring to the Adjoining Township, of Montgomery, Also Settled by Welsh III. TO this succeeded the time when in this community, as in every one from Boston to Savannah, the earlier colonial influences declined, and the new springs of energy which in the wider field were to manifest themselves in the effort for Independence, began to Show themselves. There were some changes in agriculture. The earlier methods had to be im proved. Pasture and hay lands Spread from the meadows into the upland fields, by the sowing of timothy seed, and later by the sowing Of clover seed, and the use Of land plas ter. Grazing therefore increased, and a rotation of crops began to be followed; hedges were planted, tillage became more thorough, and presently the plow with the iron mould-board appeared. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Pennsylvania The purpose of this little book is to provide the boys and girls in the schools of Pennsylvania with a brief and clear account of the origin and growth of our state and its institutions. Believing that history is not merely past politics, but past life, the writer has tried to place due emphasis upon every phase of that life - social, industrial, political, intellectual, and religious. It has been his aim to state the principles upon which Pennsylvania was founded, to trace the steady growth of the state from small beginnings to its present imperial greatness, and to introduce the men, many of them well-nigh forgotten, who were the makers of that greatness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Province of Pennsylvania The History of the Province of Pennsylvania has been printed from Samuel Smith's manuscript in the library of The Historical Society of Pennsylvania. As an examination of his history of New Jersey indicates, this manuscript would have been carefully edited by the author before publication, but it has been deemed best to follow the orthography and punctuation of the original. The author divided his work into two parts, of which this is the first. The second part contains: The introduction, and some account of the religious progress of the people called Quakers therein, [Pennsylvania] including the like account respecting the same people in New Jersey, as constituting one yearly meeting. This second portion was printed by Samuel Hazard in The Register of Pennsylvania, Volumes VI and VII, 1830-1831, with the exception of Chapters XVI and XVII, which were omitted as they contain nothing but a letter from Elizabeth Webb, giving an account of her religious experience, to Dr. Boehm, and his reply, both of which have we understand been published in a pamphlet; and as directions are likewise given to the transcriber of Smith's Ms. to omit copying them. Samuel Smith, the author of The History of the Province of Pennsylvania, was of Quaker stock, the great-grandson of Richard Smith of Bramham in the West Riding of Yorkshire, one of the original proprietaries of West Jersey and a signer of The Concessions and Agreements of the Proprietors, Freeholders and Inhabitants of the Province of West New Jersey, in America, 1676. He had by his wife Anne Yeates, Samuel Smith of Bramham, who settled in West Jersey in 1694, married Elizabeth Lovett, and was a member of the General Assembly for several years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Danville, Montour County, Pennsylvania: A Collection of Historical and Biographical Sketches In the list of secular studies history is among the most interesting and the most important. Indeed, there seems to be an almost universal desire to lift the misty veil of the past, and to note the changing scenes that mark the progress of Adams family through all the centuries past and gone. Not alone to satisfy the cravings of a curiosity that is commendable, but because the richest lessons of wisdom are drawn from the experience of the past. Still more interesting and important is the general, and, especially, the biographical history of our own locality. Here, with emotions of strange delight we trace the stern, heroic lives of the pioneers, and with ever-increasing interest watch the growing fields succeed the forest, pleasant homes supplant the rude log cabin, and the development of society as it joins the onward march to a higher civilization. On the other hand, there is a desire no less universal to be remembered by those who come after us. Thus prompted, men have sought out the most enduring material by which to transmit their names and achievements down the ages. They have reared monuments of granite, carved their deeds on the solid marble, and written their names on the everlasting rocks. But all those have yielded to the corroding power of Time, and their moldering remnants become the subjects of uncertain speculation to the antiquarian. Written history is the great conservator of the past and the most enduring memorial for the ages to come. The wondrous tower on the plains of Shinar is leveled with the dust from which it rose, and the glory of Babylon is shrouded in darkness.
