Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Landmarks in the Christian Centuries A legend of the Middle Ages, supposed to date from the fourth century, relates how, on the way to Calvary, Christ wished to rest His cross against the wall of a certain house, but was repelled by the owner, who, reviling Him, told Him to pass on. "I go, as it is written," was the reply, "and shall quickly find My rest; but thou shalt never find it until I come again." This legend, profoundly significant, if for the Jew we read humanity, was regarded as literal fact not only by mediaeval Catholics, but even by Protestants as late as the seventeenth century. The chronicler, Matthew of Paris, relates, in his Major Historia, how a certain Armenian archbishop, in the year 1229, visited the monastery of St. Albans, and assured his hosts that he had not only seen the Wandering Jew, but had actually entertained him at his own table, adding that he was a pious man, and of edifying conversation.
